Archie Talks Anime
Великобритания
Добавлен 28 янв 2024
I’m Archie Johnson, a British film and TV journalist who writes about pop culture for a living. I make deep-dive video essays about Studio Ghibli and other anime-related stuff in my spare time.
I used to live in Tokyo, right next to Akihabara. Now I’m based in Paris, France, where they love anime and manga almost as much as they do in Japan. If you're French, then bienvenue sur ma chaîne !
I love chatting about the things I cover in my videos, so please don't hesitate to drop me a comment and let me know what you think! Cheers!

Studio Ghibli exists because of France – here’s why (anime documentary)
Studio Ghibli co-founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were both hugely inspired by French artists and authors in their youth, and France would go on to play a big role in shaping Ghibli in the years that followed. In fact, if it wasn’t for the influence of France, then Ghibli as we know it today may not exist. In this video, I take a deep dive into the French people and places that inspired Miyazaki and Takahata and helped shape the biggest anime studio in the world.

One Piece Origin Story: The Real Roronoa Zoro (A Brutal French Pirate)
Просмотров 3 тыс.2 месяца назад
Did you know that Roronoa Zoro from One Piece is named after a real 17th century French pirate named François Lolonois? Known among his peers as the Bane of Spain, this man rose from servitude to become a major figure in the early days of the Golden Age of Piracy, stealing a fortune from the Spanish as he killed and plundered his way around the Caribbean. Records state that he once cut out the ...
France is obsessed with anime & manga (especially ONE PIECE) - here’s why
Просмотров 187 тыс.3 месяца назад
When I moved to Paris, I had no idea just how much the French loved manga and anime. France is the biggest importer of manga in the world, and one title reigns supreme: One Piece. In this video, I take a deep dive into France’s obsession with manga and anime, and look into why One Piece in particular is so popular here. As always, thank you so much for watching and please join the conversation ...
The Real Reason Miyazaki HATES AI (Not What You Think)
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.4 месяца назад
Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has dedicated his life to creating beautiful animated movies by hand, so it’s no wonder he isn’t exactly keen on the rise of artificial intelligence in the film world. However, his reasons for hating AI might surprise you. In this video, I take a deep dive into Miyazaki’s opinions on AI and the origins of his most brutal quote: "I strongly feel that this ...
The worst Studio Ghibli English dub voice actor (and the best)
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Howl’s Moving Castle is one of my favourite Studio Ghibli films, but I’ve got a huge problem with Disney’s dub: Christian Bale. While I love his other work, Bale’s take on Howl ruins the English language version of this classic Miyazaki movie for me. It’s an unpopular opinion, but just hear me out though, fair warning, watching this video might just ruin the dub for you! 00:00 Is Howl’s Moving ...
Akira-style BIKER GANGS Return to Tokyo! Is Japan still safe in 2024?
Просмотров 5 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Is Japan still a safe country to visit in 2024? Some friends of mine recently asked me if they need to be worried about Akira-style biker gangs after seeing a news report about a spate of robberies in Tokyo. In this video, I take a deep dive into Japan’s bōsōzoku scene, from the history of this fascinating youth subculture to the modern gangs trying to keep it alive. If you enjoy this mini doc,...
How Great Britain secretly shaped Studio Ghibli | Miyazaki in the UK
Просмотров 105 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Did you know that the United Kingdom has influenced the future of Studio Ghibli on more than one occasion? In this video, I take a deep dive into Hayao Miyazaki’s life-changing trips to the U.K. and explore how these visits impacted two of his films in particular. As a British fan of Studio Ghibli, I was thrilled to discover that our little island nation has had such a big impact on Miyazaki ov...
Joe Hisaishi: Miyazaki's Maestro | A Studio Ghibli Music Documentary
Просмотров 7 тыс.8 месяцев назад
The films of Hayao Miyazaki wouldn’t be the same without the music of his friend and long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The composer is synonymous with Ghibli, having created the studio’s most memorable scores, but he sometimes doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. I took a deep dive into Hisaishi’s life and career, from his childhood and teenage years to his breakthrough in Japan and...
BLUE LOCK is now Japan's BEST-SELLING manga | A Football Love Story
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Blue Lock was the best-selling manga in Japan in 2023, with sales exceeding 10 million. It’s an engrossing series with a great anime adaptation, but the truth is that Blue Lock got a helping hand on its way to the top. Here’s how it overtook the likes of Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen to claim the manga crown: It's a football (or soccer, for my American friends) love story. If you enjoy the vi...
Why Does Miyazaki HATE America? Ghibli Founder's USA Beef EXPLAINED
Просмотров 846 тыс.10 месяцев назад
It’s no secret that Hayao Miyazaki hates America with a passion, but why exactly does the Studio Ghibli legend dislike the United States so much? I took a deep dive into the famous filmmaker’s relationship with Uncle Sam, and I was shocked to discover how far back this beef actually goes. If you like this video you should subscribe to my channel: I’m a massive Ghibli and Miyazaki fan, and I’m w...
In Porco Rosso the voice actor in french is Jean reno
Reno is so good as Porco, the French dub rocks! Apparently Miyazaki prefers it over the Japanese one!
@ArchieTalksAnime A little fun fact in "le château de Cagliostro" there are identical scenes to "le roi et l'oiseau" there is a video on youtube which shows two scenes from the two films and they are the same except that they are not the same artist
Isn’t it ironic that Zoro gots beef with a cook when Lolonois was cooked alive?
😂😂
It’s just so emotional for me born in France and in love with Japan since childhood that those two countries merge so beautifully and have mutual respect and admiration in such an inspirational way. We love Ghibli for sure but we also love anime / manga such as Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon and imported them before any other countries beside Japan. ❤
France’s relationship with manga & anime really is fascinating! I actually have another video all about this if you’re interested: ruclips.net/video/9CbrrMIeHbE/видео.htmlsi=aId-UJpGKylQbLWN Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, it’s much appreciated!
As a french from Alsace, the region where you can found Colmar and many many amazing town like it, I can onlya approve this video and even tell you that betwin my region and Japan, there is a lot of bound betwin us, not only includin architecture, but also food and art.
There has been an unexpected strong connection between France and Japan when it comes to art eversince Claude Monet in the 1870s. French Millennials grew up with the Japanese animés in the 80s including Ulysse XXI, Masks, Goldorak, Dragon Ball, Captain Tsubasa, Jayce and the Wheel Warriors, Inspector Gadget and many more, then Japanese video games in the 90s and the passion for Manga is still flying strong among the French Gen Zs. The French rank third in the global manga market behind the Americans and the Japanese, bearing in mind France's population makes for 20 percent of the USA's. The tradition of Belgian comics may bring an explanation to this connection.
he's not anti america he's anti war.
Hey, I'm anti America when it comes to Japan. LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR! TEN THOUSAND YEARS! Funny as it is people were MUCH happier when they were living under the Imperial Government. They had to be stopped, but we went around it the wrong way.
He's such an old man, he hates everyone.
The fact that you included a scene from "Les Kassos" at 1:30 is a welcome surprise for me. This is so specificly french that it's incredible that youtube could bring it up to an english reserch !
Haha well I have a French girlfriend so that was a big help, she told me all about Les Kassos. The Miyazaki bit was too good, I had to get that in somewhere!
Fench schools frequently have children watch Ghibli movies in theaters, or at least they used to, and I can't thank them enough for it. No wonder it felt right at home watching these as a kid
You guys are so lucky, I would have loved to have been introduced to Ghibli at a young age, I bet it’s even more magical to discover these films as a child!
“The regular people of the country are not to blame for the stupid decisions of the government” Yes they are, especially for America. America prides itself on it being the beacon of Freedom and Democracy. Every decision America has made has the blessing of the American population. If this were not the case, then America would be best described as a Two-Party Authoritarian Regime, which would only be met with hostility by Americans. You cannot take credit for the good that your government does without taking accountability for the bad. You cannot have your cake and eat it too. The American people vote for its representatives. The representatives carry out the will of the people. The atrocities committed by the US have been approved of and defended by the representatives. Any problems you have with the US has received majority support of “regular Americans”
Well americans tried to control japan :v
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
As a Dane I'm fairly certain that H.C Andersen has inspired some Ghibli movies but I can't really remember any at the moment
For sure, Ponyo is basically a loose adaptation of The Little Mermaid!
Inventing animation also kinda helped 😂
17:40 Americans r not blunt , biggest people pleasers
Fisrt Anime VHS: Nausicaa, a masterpiece. And grave of the fireflies is still a trauma. Nice work as usual!
Thank you man, great to hear from you again! Please tell me you still have Nausicaä on VHS?! I love watching stuff on VHS, it’s kinda like listening to music on vinyl, there’s just something so pleasing about it that I can’t explain.
@ArchieTalksAnime My parents kept it i'm sure, they loved it too. They still have their projector 8mm with the first disneys.
@ 😮 no way, that’s so cool! I bet that’s worth quite a bit of money these days!
@ArchieTalksAnime If we come back alive from their lair someday maybe we ll know. The good part is maintenance is cheap so I guess it still works. We had aristocats and jungle book iirc, now that was indeed a great experience.
"Anime" is literally a French word. It comes from "dessin animé" which means "animated drawing". It means nothing in Japanese apart from the term "me" which means "eye".
France and Japan, two countries with a very rich culture and very ancient civilization. The mastery of art and know-how continues from generation to generation. You only have to see the restoration of Notre Dame in Paris, to realize that French know-how has lasted for centuries.
Amazing documentary thank you 🙏🏼 Moebius' love for Nausicaa was such that he named his daughter after the movie ❤️
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yeah that’s so cool about Moebius naming his daughter Nausicaä, I didn’t actually know that when I made the video, somebody mentioned it afterwards. That’s the ultimate compliment, I can only imagine how moved Miyazaki was when he learned about this.
Wow, I knew Miyazaki was fond of Colmar but I didn't know his true passion of St Exupery. I was in Japan six years ago and I visited a very nice museum in Hakone : the Little Prince museum. It was weird to see that there... As a French man, I was happy to see my culture well exposed but I didn't understand why this author was so important for the Japanese people. And now, I just learn Mitazaki loves St Exupéry very much. Thank you for this nice documentary!
You’re very welcome my friend, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I love Hakone, such a chill place, I visited myself a couple of years ago - but I had no idea there was a Little Prince museum there! That’s so cool!
SO WHAT? I don't want Miyazaki to like everything I do! I also don't like many things he doesn't like! We can agree and disagree. So what??? People have different life experiences. They are entitled to different opinions when it comes to entertainment and art. Am I supposed to hate Myiazaki's work because we disagree here or there? Or start hating everything he dislikes? 🤦♂️
As a french guy, I will never stop being proud of the relationship Japan and France built, of that "symbiosis" between french art and japanese art. Japan and its culture are immensely respected in France, and I am glad of it.
It is very clear that Miyasaki's films reflect his personality. He is humble and despises the arrogance of man. He wants us to strive to be greater than we are and to rise above our lowest desires.
A story was made by one man.
Bqnget
How you can hate that peacefull country America and all these wonderful and beautiful souls from Hollywood?
Miyazaki wound up dealing with absolutely the worst American Arrogant Pricks available when he interacted with the American film industry. Disney wants to believe that it has some special right to OWN creativity and imagination, and is so terrified that anyone whose style is different from theirs might ever be noticed or appreciated that they actively shut creative input from others out. So... that probably didn't help.
For those curious about Saint Exupery, there is going to be a movie soon
I keep seeing the posters in metro stations, I can’t wait to see it!
The french and the japanese always had a special relationship. Just look up how the house of Monet was decorated (the painter)
I just looked this up and I like Monet even more now, that’s insane! Dude had taste!
I'm french and this whole Club Dorothée debate is the reason why my mother despise Ségolène Royal and her whole political party
It seems like she had no idea how many enemies she was making at the time! I don’t follow French politics very closely but I get the impression she’s not particularly popular?
@ArchieTalksAnime she's not, but mainly for other less trivial reasons, like the fact she increasing gasoline tax to compensate for another failed one (the "écotaxe" that was aimed at transiting cargo trucks)
@ Oh okay I see. Yeah hating on anime/manga is definitely trivial by comparison haha. I had no idea she was married to François Hollande until recently!
@ArchieTalksAnime the "écotaxe" is quite new, because back in 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy faced her for presidency, and she lose only by 6%, so i think back then she wasn't that unpopular
I find it quite funny that nowadays the French will refer to Japanese cartoons using the Japanese « Manga » and the Japanese in return will use the French « animé ».
As a real One Piece fan loving the manga & French, I am amazed about how u really understood the build up to France s love for Japanese anime and manga. Great look back It took me back to my childhood and exact timing on watching those animes and still loving it Thanks for this
You’re welcome my friend, I’m glad you liked the video and I’m happy that it brought back some nice childhood memories for you, that’s great to hear! I had so much fun researching and making this video so I’m very pleased that a lot of people are really enjoying it!
Vidéo très intéressante et instructive pour moi dont la découverte de Miayazaki est assez récente suivant les conseils de mes fils. Je me suis rattrapé depuis. Je comprends mieux la 2 CV du documentaire Hayao Miyazaki et le héron qui lui aussi fait réaliser la complexité que représente la réalisation d'un film.
How surprising the British taking credit for something that is theirs to take
Okay but who wouldn't hate the USA ....😅
If you keep with conten like this you're channel is blowing up
Thank you bro, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
French here We love Ghibli, I often watches those movies with my familly From my grandma to my youngest cousin. It's great memories I'm happy Miyasaki enjoys our country
Hello , i'm french , thank you for making this video , i love yall❤
You’re very welcome my friend, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I had a blast making it, I learned so much!
That video made me proud of being french thank you
You’re welcome, I’m happy you enjoyed it!
You cut out the most important part of that Zombie AI clip, he said the first thing it made him think of was a friend of his who had a horrible medical condition (I think it was seizures iirc), all of his stances come from a place not of sophist philosophy, but in fact an intensely natural, human perspective. You can agree or disagree but he always operates from a stand of principle that is from consideration and experience.
Absolutely, I agree 100% that his comments in this instance came from a place of principle and consideration. I actually made a full video about this - the friend you’re talking about is apparently a guy who suffered from leprosy. Here’s the video if you’re interested, I’d love to know what you think: ruclips.net/video/qSyvGlL7o1Y/видео.htmlsi=FtRB5kXN2IZ0yxAJ
I dont think he hates America as much as he hates war and consumerism, which are about the only two things the US manages to succeed at.
It's not Jee blee, but gi·blee. Great video !
It’s actually Ji-bu-ri. While Ghibli is an Italian word derived from Libyan Arabic, and that word is pronounced with a G sound, the name of the studio is pronounced with a J sound. That’s how it’s pronounced in Japan and there are plenty of examples of Miyazaki saying it - here’s a great video that explains it: ruclips.net/video/pl9Q2yx7ppI/видео.htmlsi=yB7Ac5Hx1zUDvc47 Hope this helps, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@ I meant in a English language not in Japan native accent.
@ It’s still pronounced with a “J” sound in English. Here’s an interview with Steve Alpert for reference: ruclips.net/video/f4R1BpkT7q4/видео.htmlsi=mwzfWKpvKdkVCSSI Alpert worked at Ghibli for 15 years between 1996 and 2011 as a senior executive (he was in charge of the studio’s international department), and he says “Jibli” (or Jeeblee). It’s a really interesting interview, if you have half an hour it’s definitely worth a listen :)
@ArchieTalksAnime because he is saying it in the Japan pronunciation. UK, US, Latin based language we pronunced it Gibli as intended in Italy (I’m a humble Italian from Avellino). Only Japanese and some others Asians countries says Jee because in native Japanese phonetic is different that’s all ^^ (and it would mean something else)
@ I respectfully disagree my friend. If we’re talking about the hot desert wind that comes from the Sahara then yes, we would use “Gi” when saying the word ghibli in English. But if we’re referring to Studio Ghibli, then we use “Ji” as Alpert does in the interview I shared. I mean, he worked there for 15 years so he should know, right? He’s not pronouncing it the Japanese way (which is Ji-bu-ri), he’s saying Jibli, as that’s the correct way for English speakers to refer to the studio.
When I was around 7 or 8, my parents took us to a special exhibition of Le Roi et l'Oiseau. We had seen the movie so many times as kids, and my mother was a massive fan as well. We were playing in the exhibition with my little brother, chasing the images of the movie that were projected on the ground, when we met a Japanese old man. Probably the first Japanese man I had seen in my life. He asked us if we liked the exhibition and if we were having fun, and we said yes and yes! Then, he walked away, and we continued our games. This man was Miyazaki, my mother told me later and I'm kinda baffled about it still. I didn't know or care who he was at that time. But also, it was such a nice normal encounter that i can't be mad about it. It's even better ❤ so yeah, he is certainly a big fan of Grimault's work.
That’s so cool, what a special story! While Miyazaki may be jaded about a lot of things in this world, it’s clear that he gets a lot of joy from seeing children having fun!
Le Roi et l'Oiseau is truly an underrated treasure of French animation. I must have seen it thirty times already, starting when I was really little until today. The animation is already great, but the political message behind the story is amazing. Truly, don't overlook this gem, Paul Grimault is the root under the Ghibli tree. Also, the music is beautiful, and the texts are written by Jacques Prévert, who is also a monument of French literature. So yeah, enjoy ❤
In México is Dragón Ball Z. Also we had a lot on common on how many of that generation started watching anime without the proper censorship haha
Anyone who think Miyazaki is an old grumpy man just don't want to even try to understand him.
I've never seen it mentioned anywhere yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if the cartoonist Fred (Frédéric Othon Aristidès) was another influence on Ghibli's works. I love his Philémon cartoons from the 70s, and its oniric aspect seems to match quite well. The colourful and fantastical visuals are also reminiscent of Moebius.
Ok
We french grow up with manga
Well he lost a lot of my respect I’m really not interested in a close minded racist
well the US literally obliterated his childhood and country, and also chopped up his movies and artworks😭 whaddya expecting
@ Japan asked for it in WW2 listen to how he would speak of the Japanese men of this era
