Rich, we're taking two different paths to the same destination. My Excal 308 Short is identical performance wise to the old OB. Instead of upping arrow weight, I decided to go with a smaller fixed blade broad head. You want that big cut, but you know you need plenty of momentum to push all that blade through it's target. Either approach will work, and they both have their pros and cons. The beauty of crossbow hunting is the almost endless options available, and they all will do the job.
Practice makes perfect, and ability to change makes one great we need to explore and find what is right for you at that moment in time thanks for your decathlon to the hunting method
I would like to see the drop @ 30y. (my max distance). Even for a big bear I would be confident with a 500g arrow. Enjoy all the videos you put on. I know it is a lot of work!!
The weight of the arrow is only one consideration, remember this is a really slow crossbow. Speed is the other factor. Totally agree that any modern speed would not need such an arrow. The drop isn't so much of a problem with this because I have the Oracle x. Where the red dot is is where the arrow goes LOL
This information is relevant to modern crossbows… or at-least semi-modern. I have a WR Rampage 360 that I shoot with added point weight because a heavy arrow hits like the judgement of God at the speeds I’m getting. On the flip side, I am running 300 grains up front on my trad bow for the same reason. Weight in the front is never a bad thing so long as it doesn’t impede arrow flight.
I can tell my crossbow is a little less noisy with super heavy arrow setup. 2219 with a 258 grain point weighed about 630 grains. You gotta aim low because it really slows the arrow down.
doing some math and assuming you would sight in each arrow to adjust for droppage there is not as much difference as you might think at 30 yds. 569 gr. arrow 260 ft/sec = 28.89 yds in 1/3 second ( time for a deer to react to arrow) 639.5 gr. 249ft./sec = 27.66 in 1/3 second. Anything past that yardage you should be thinking of changing the impact point if the animal reacts. Not sure how quickly a bear reacts to the sound (If at all). OB still has a place in the arsenal!
I am not really concerned with droppage, a lot of people comment on that. I should probably address that in a video. The Burris Oracle X completely accounts for elevation drops when I sight it in. Speed is a big concern no doubt but this crossbow is already slow. I think I would be fine out to 20 yards on a bear!.
Sometimes we get hung up on speed but to be honest I’m seeing a lot of consistency issues with the fastest new x-bows. I prefer a hard hitting, bone splitting, hole puncher of at least 500 grains. OB may not be fast but both of those bolts would devastate their target.
@@Deathbybunjie I can say the same but still those numbers would make the OB an effective killing machine. My Sinister 430 is getting that 525 gr bolt with a Magnus SB 150 out at 380ft/s That’s a freight train lol
Anytime you increase fox ,making the arrow heavier your gaining momentum, you said you don’t really worry about fox, that’s what gives your arrow penetration
Yes, and that's why I was hopeful that they shoot the same at 20 yards but unfortunately they don't. If they're closed at 20 yards you can just put in Bolt one and Bolt 2. I'll have to actually separately sight in at 20 yards for these arrows though because there's so much difference. The two different bolts settings are good for fuel points versus broadheads though what I've seen.
I have my go-to bolts and don't mess around with my setup. I appreciate being able to watch someone else do the tinkering around with this stuff so I can still learn about it though. Doesn't matter if this applies to my gear. Interesting stuff. I am curious how these heavy bolts will preform and what your new range will be.
Not everyone realizes how important nostalgia is for us "more seasoned hunters" lol.
I have some custom arrows from AJ's custom arrows that I shoot out of my X1. They are the bomb! Best arrows I've ever owned
Rich, It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you for crossbow appreciation month! All hail Bunjie!
More to come!
Even tho I'm not a crossbow hunter i enjoy your channel!!
V;e;ry helpful info for me, since my crossbow is the Excaliber Ibex (same specs as Bunjie). Love August - crossbow appreciation month!

Good seeing bunjie again. Love it. All hail bunjie 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌
Good video . 👍
My setup is accurate and someone I follow has said "accuracy is number one." But I enjoy watching you check your arrows looking for best performance.
Accuracy is #1 with crossbows! For sure!
Rich, good video and content, thanks for the great research you do.
Ha ha golden years to kool. Great video.

Pretty fast offset with heavy arrow only 11ft.
Good bow.with the wt. Diff

oh man if I keep watching you I fear I will start experimenting with heavy arrows too....must resist!
Great deer hunting weather! Why go heavier? I only see less accurate at distance and a higher load on faster crossbows.
No reason to go this heavy at all with modern crossbows really, this is just up the momentum on this old slow one
Yessir!!
I tried Helical I don’t like them lol. I find offset is much more accurate and forgiving, especially if using a left offset.
Personally I love my 3” xvane fletchings, hate the 4” and I feel like 2” is a tad to small 👍🏻👍🏻

Still not nearly the momentum the SWAT X1 gets at 360 fps though

Not really...FOC is not part of any KE or Momentum calculation
What is your favorite crossbow top 3 to you.
Bunjie, Bunjie III and Bunjie 4.0 😄
I think the Oracle X has the capability to sight in more than one arrow and keep the data. I think?

I see the heavier weight for the slower crossbow. Deeper penetration.
Yep, for the slower crossbow for sure but not for modern stuff, no point LOL
Bungie zombie bear if you can do it ice water and vinegar like first hour after kill worms grow fast
I would reall like to see you get a 500 pounder with the ob, it would be great.
Day may come 😄
@@Deathbybunjie I hope I get to see it ,it would be AWESOME 💯
At 30 yds that heavier arrow drop +4 inches, iam guessing.
But with the Burris Oracle X scope it's dead on

Heavy arrows in a severe thunderstorm ⛈️.
Now THAT'S heavy! 😆
