Cirrus SR20 Cross-country, with our kids...in February || Carolina to Utah || Pt. 1

  • We have a wedding to attend in Utah... in February... so of course we are flying our Cirrus SR20! In this video we load the plane and depart Smithfield NC (KJNX) in the rain... which seems to be a theme for us lately! But it does provide some beautiful scenery in the instrument flying environment! Other than flying in the rain, this flight is pretty easy and mostly smooth with an easy IFR approach into Huntsville International Airport (KHSV). Cockpit audio and ATC included. #Flying #CirrusSR20 #FamilyFlight
    This will be a multi-part series where we will document each leg of our flying journey. Our route will take us from North Carolina, through Alabama, Texas, Albuquerque New Mexico, St. George Utah, and finally ending up in Provo Utah. We fly through IMC, over the plains, over the Grand Canyon, over snow capped mountains, and more. It is a beautiful journey! Thanks for coming along!

    I dream of this whole situation one day.... only about 5 hours away from solo but things are on hold at present so having to use my noble flight sim at home to stay in the loop.

    Great video! Traveling and seeing the west by air is next up on our family trip list. I would probably break it up into 3 days worth of flying (knowing our kids) but kudos for doing it in 2. Great travelers

    Sorry we missed you in Utah... You have REALLY done a great job with branding, editing, telling a great story, and capturing interesting detail! I'll post my GP questions here. Thanks in advance for your input.
    1. How do I get the map to auto-center on the plane and always display north up by default?
    2 .Once I load a SID or STAR into the flight plan, is there a simple way to view the procedure without having to go to the “Charts” page to look it up?
    3. From the map page, I click on the destination information, then choose the “Proc” tab, then choose an approach which overlays a geo-referenced plate on the map which is good. However, I have no option to choose an entry nor does it load any of the waypoints. Am I missing something obvious?

      Thanks so much for the feedback, it really means a lot to us!
      1. I don't believe there's a way to get the map to autocenter on the plane by default. It's all controlled by toggling the compass icon at the bottom, but I'm sure you already knew that. As to it defaulting, I don't think there's a way because as soon as you pan the map it stays wherever you pan to until you re-click the icon.
      2. What I do here is split the screen, so on the left I'll have my moving map, and on the right I have the charts binder, and can review the SID/Approach/etc there without having to leave the screen. Since I use an iPad Pro (the big one) it's plenty of space to view both. On a handheld iPad like you're using, this method may not work. It would be good to have a floating button that can toggle between two pages quickly without having to go through the menu.
      3. No, you aren't missing anything. When you load an arrival, it gives all the lateral guidance right on your flight plan, including selecting a transition. I have been waiting for it to do approaches, but for some reason they haven't added that feature. I really hope they do because it's the only time when my iPad and GTN's don't sync up (they are connected via Flightstream210). I usually do the same thing as mentioned before, with the split screen and then manually add the first couple fixes. It's not perfect, but it usually gets me through the IF and onto final approach at least. Then I'm on my GTN's for waypoint sequencing and iPad for plate view only.
      Sorry I couldn't be more help on those. #3 is my personal biggest irk with GP, but overall I really like the app!

      @@TherebyAir Great information, thank you. I'll join the ranks of those waiting for Garmin to add approach detail to the plan. I have a 750/650 combination so I'm looking to get a FS-510 for database and flightplan streaming.

      @@MalibuFlyer Yeah, I switched onto GP way back in the days when I had to decide on a portable ADS-b in device. They didn't used to work with each other's apps like they do now. I had used Foreflight for one year, but at that time GP had more features and easier menus to navigate. There's been a bit of leap frog between the two apps (my friend uses FF so I've see this a bit), but at the moment Foreflight seems to have the edge in a couple areas. I guess we wait!

      @@TherebyAir Agreed. I did film the flight home but am debating as to whether to post it. I'm trying to offer something more than just the same old routine content (departure, climb, batteries die, recharge in time for CAVU arrival into the Phoenix area) but it has proven to be difficult lately. Are you using Final Cut Pro, Adobe, or something else to edit?

      Malibu Flyer haha, yeah.. I often wonder if I’m going to bore people with the flight vlogs since it is a lot of repeat... but then again, some of my most watched videos are what I would consider snoozers 😆.
      I use Adobe Premiere.

    Hey, nice video! I was wondering, how fast do you go at cruise, and what year is your cirrus? Me and my dad are looking at somewhere between an 00 and an 05 model, or an early 80s mooney m20j. Pretty different aircrafts, but researching what's the most practical lol

    That is some great IFR. I love the line "we'll pop out right below, hopefully right side up. Ah the joys of IFR. How do y'all handle the need to pee (dehydrate and hold it, pee bottles, or Depends)?

      There are some bags that have stuff that solidify liquids. They work great, for the boys anyway haha!

      @@TherebyAir yep, have those. Just wondering if y'all do bladders of steel, or something else. We have been stretching our flights out to up to 4.5 hours, but have a female funnel for my wife and daughter and bottles to go around.

      Our longest flight so far is 4.9 hours, plus taxi time. The girls haven't ever had to go in flight, which is good... Once our boy went 4 times in a 3 hour flight!

    Should only check oil and sump fuel just before flying. NEVER clean your windshield swirling the cloth...wipe in one direction, from top to bottom or side to side consistently. Never turn pitot heat on before taxi...turn it on just before taking the runway and taking off...you will fry it. You have FIKI on that plane? If not, you are risking ice/snow weather further West.

      NM, found it. It's a JTONG Portable Scale with flashlight.

      Yeah, it's a handy little tool. Before we found that we were using a standard scale and subtracting our weight. This is much easier!

    What type of monitor is that in place of the original Avidyne MFD?

      It's an iPad pro running Garmin Pilot. It's also connected via bluetooth to the GTN's by Garmin FlightStream210

    PS: How stable is the SR20? We get knocked around a bit in our little RV-12. Any comparison with a C172 or C152?

      It handles turbulence and rough air very well. Compared to a 152, there's really no comparison. Weight and dihedral alone make a huge difference. But also, the SR20 has spring loaded controls. There's some controversy surrounding that, but I can tell you the thing tracks like it's on rails because of it. It doesn't get knocked off it's game easily!

      You won't regret it. We had a Mooney before the Cirrus. Nothing against the Mooney at all, it was a fantastic plane... But we do fly the Cirrus a lot more. It's roomier, easier to get in and out of because of two doors (big deal with kids), and it's simpler to fly. No prop control, no gear, no cowl flaps, no carb heat, panel layout is simple and easy to use, and it has better ground handling manners.

      Anything over 2 hours I like to go at least 8000, but 11,000 if winds are favorable.
