Shields are, in fact, so useful as weapons that in full speed full contact SCA fighting, they can't be struck with safely. So we don't strike with them. It's against the rules.
Cool video and I'm also highly impressed with your MASTERFULL put-downs for the trolls! I've LARPed once in my life and even from that, I can testify that if foam weapons hurt, rattan must hurt a hell of a lot more, even with armour. Just wish I could get involved in the SCA. Sadly, living in England, there's not many groups around. The closest's in Basingstoke... Dammit, why do Americans get all the coolest geek stuff? (Pretty sure that's an oxymoron, but still...)
I'm glad no one has done this at my local practice, I would be in every "what not to do" frame. I can't help that I block with my head instead of the buckler. The buckler costs more, I need to keep it looking good.
Greetings, I am from the Barony of Three Rivers in Calontir and Sir Hiram is one of my best friends. To see him in the two opening scenes was surprising and hilarious! I will have to try to figure out how to send him a link. I'm sure he will "love" it. Syr Valdemar Jarnknefi
What a fun video. It was extra fun to see Almalric, the current King of AnTir. He sometimes comes to my Barony's local fight practice. He'll be stepping down at 12th night.
The guy in the white belt is Duke Amalric, yes now of An Tir. He lived in Atlantia for quite a while. The other is Aethelwolf, and I'm sure he has never been in An Tir for any reasonable amount of time.
If you look closely at the remaining information, it is clear that the knights and professional soldiers of the medieval period were in fact professional and skilled. Their traditions have mostly been lost, but that's part of what we are rediscovering. Manuals like I.33 for sword and buckler, or Joie de Hache for poleaxe work show there were systems for fighting in the west, in armor. Not just bashing with main strength.
'Only one guy is supposed to fall down' more like "No Head Bashing" that guy charged and drove his helmet into the other fighter's shield. Shields are bigger
There are oafs in every art. You do not see aimless swinging in this video, and this is a BLOOPER reel. I also note that when moderately skilled SCA guys go and play in other WMA stuff, they usually rise to the top of the competition pretty quickly. Full speed training has its powerful benefits.
Clearly, your extreme distance from Pennsic is what has kept you from being legends at that event. Or that this year would be the first that you'd be old enough to fight at it. I don't talk trash. That's probably why I'm so interested in seeing some proof of your skill. Every newly authorized fighter I've ever seen, regardless of age, has been more or less a single shot kill for the experienced. So seeing your skill level will be a revelation.
I'd also like to add that wearing plate armor (like me) reduces your flexibility, and makes the wearer very top-heavy. I am a new fighter, and often find myself being pushed over by body stabs.
@JVRottweil Actually wearing plastic doesn't help you win. It's a honor-based contest, so the armor really is just there for protection and appearance. I used to have a set of Kydex™ leg armor that I stopped wearing because it worked too well. OTOH, there are plenty of top heavy fighters who wear minimal armor because they can move faster.
@smeigaldavis "Beat each other with sticks". Yup, thats pretty much what its about. Really fun. This isnt actual re-enactment. Its not a school for historical martial arts. Its a group of folks having fun.
Well, I don't know if you've had a response after all this time, or even still need an answer, but in the SCA most of our work (at least where I am), we use the base technique called "The Bellatrix Snap". It generates force from multiple areas of the body, including the arm, and is meant to generate enough force to penetrate armor, but still move fast enough to be practical.
@Patrickthedutch For the most part, no. the fighting looks medieval"ish" but its a mix of many things and some purely SCA. The fighting has become sportlike and grew into its own thing. All in all, really damn fun though. there are rules but its all borne out of safety. Its not about re-enacting , its about having fun in a medieval like atmosphere.
Dukex3, please do be sure to "help" bludbathmcgrath understand the reinforced honor system the SCA uses. I'm sure from the "Tale of Chivalry" I found about you online, that you will be gentler in the teaching than others would choose to be. I myself do not fight, but greatly respect the effort SCA fighters put into learning to fight and the skills it takes to do it well.
My drive is only about 3 hours, but I am not sure when I will be heading out of town. I am hoping to arrive in time for the torchlight tourney (to watch) I can always armor up for some pick up fighting off to the side. *GRIN*
Hah, good video for those of us who haven't entered combat yet. I'm not quite old enough nor do I have the recources to begin right now, but studying things like this helps a lot =) Just one question...why no ducking/dodging?
Consider yourself lucky Bludbath, you have saved yourself an ass whooping that might will have been video taped and presented for all the world to see.
SirCOrby - Well done, keep them coming. I'll add one I wish I had video for: "No, helm manteling is not a "thrown weapon" Duke3X- are you in fact Duke Syr Palymar of the Two Baronies? If so, well met (again). Regarding this "blud" person - I doubt he's got an auth card, no one would authorize him. ALso don't you find it odd that someone can afford live fighting steel, a lorica and other armor, yet can't seem to score a video camera. $100 for a simple one at Wal-Mart IanEsq.
Just a p.s. we here in An tir and more particularly in the Barony of Aqua Terra are going to be hosting a four day event called the Art of War. Many teachers (some from Caid and the West Kingdom)and much learning. Look to your kingdom information for all the details....bring your armor and bed roll. We do the cooking . Hot showers and cabins for rest. Huzzah!
Great fun watching it, these guys really go for it. But the footwork is lousy. First thing you learn: never be unbalanced, never make a too large swing, the opponent might get in behind your swing. But again: looks like a real hoot. Well done.
On the "block don't duck" it looked like the man in red hit the man in checkers quite well across the head while avoiding being hit himself. Did I miss something? I am confused as to why he should have blocked.
Sir Corby, Just watched the video again. Good clean wholesome fun. Thank you. To all the viewers, Try it out, it is huge fun. I think every person who suits up discovers that fighting an unwilling and actively resisting opponent is far more difficult than you imagined - and more fun too! Remember the lessons learned by MMA competitors, those combat arts which aren't being practiced with realistic training scenarios are not practical when faced by aggressive battle hardened opponents.
The only way I'll ever let him keep a post up here is if Dukex3 or someone else I personally know tells me that blud showed up at an event and fought. Or if he writes a very polite, full apology, admitting that he doesn't know what he was bragging about.
@SirCorby I study Italian longsword, and don't do SCA heavy combat. What the SCA guys do may not be 'historical', but I have seen some SCA guys with real skill, and they have more than once given a good spanking to overconfident martial artists from other traditions, Getting past that damned shield is a bitch!
Man, I'm only 16 and just started playing Amtgard, and I want to get into this so bad! Only problem would be my parents and where I can find a group near me =/
Yeesh....alot of bashing in the comments. SCA combat is fun. I'm so bored with people who look at anything other people are doing and go...."whatever is way more EXTREME! What your doing is lame cause I'm so EXTREME!".......chiiiill. 's fun...give it a shot you might like it.
LordDraco, you know SCA fighters aren't allow to deliberately hurt their opponents. And the way a lot of theses guys talk down about Us, I can't see any of them being worried about injuries in any case ;)
So that everyone will be able to find each other to arrange this demonstration at Border Raids, may I suggest that Dukex3 (Palymar) and bludbathmcgrath ("William Tolliver") post links here to pictures of themselves, preferably in the heraldic display they'll use at Border Raids? I'd hate for you guys to miss each other!
when fighting with boffer-weapons that's a great way of fighting since you're nimble and light and don't have to worry about anything in the world except getting hit :P
And pray tell, who is "WE" and could you post some video of your methods for fighting FULL speed FULL contact with it, as the ability to do so without causing serious injury, especially while wearing only "light leathers" is the sort of skill that should be demonstrated to the world.
@SirCorby Hell, I did Kali, and you can get knocked the hell out when you've got a full suit of kendo armor and a suit of standard martial art stuff (padded helmets and gloves and stuff) under the kendo. And kali sticks are a lot smaller and lighter than the shit these guys have. Gonna agree with you here.
But by all means, if you're suggesting that the way we fight is in some way "wimpy", then please do be sure to mention this at any SCA fighting event you happen to attend. Be sure to tell this to everyone you face in the list that day, and if you aren't yet authorized to fight in the SCA, (which I imagine is the case) then certainly explain this to the person who volunteers to fight your authorization bout.

Ducking is terrible in ANY situation. You expose your lower back and your neck. You also can't see where you are striking or going. The enemy can easily just bash you down or block your attacks with a shield and thrust his sword into your spine and bam, you're dead.
@SirCorby Full speed and contact certainly does have importance, as does realistic/accurate technique and form. To answer your question, yes, WMA students certainly do both, at least in the school I attend. What we don't do is worry about politics, whose outfit looks better, what "title" we hold, etc. The one SCA event I've seen had one recurring element - members whining about how their opponents hit too hard. I've been hit hard more than once. WMA students aren't known for whining.
@Steve Shurtleff I'm just catching up here. Have you tried the full contact game as practiced by the Armored Combat League/IMCF/Battle of the Nations/HMB (etc)? What is your opinion there?
Very amusing, but as a smaller fighter (well, mid-sized--I'm only 6' after all...) I have to dispute one of your suggestions. BY ALL MEANS, get in close to the big fighters! If you don't, they'll ding you before you can touch them! *grumbles*

@Raawrbert reading your comment it seems they didnt want you back not because you "beat their champion" but because you weren't playing by their rules.
Many years ago my toddler daughter watched this video with me and would request it every few days. Thanks for the fun memories.
This must be, like, the oldest SCA fighting video on RUclips, and still going strong!
Shields are, in fact, so useful as weapons that in full speed full contact SCA fighting, they can't be struck with safely. So we don't strike with them. It's against the rules.
Oh my god that was FUNNY! Awesome! This made my night. (I'm going to remain silent on whether or not I've done any of the bloopers...)
The poleman bit was great. Evaded and countered well.

It's true, he does need a lanyard. Beautifully edited, I thought your choice of music was perfect.

I love this. I'm in An Tir and love to see how the rest of the known world plays!!!!
Actual serious rules that actually allow people to fight full force full speed and not seriously injure each other.
Almeric lives in my shire! He's really cool too! Can't wait till Kingdom A and S
@SirCorby
I was one of the list girls. yay. Hopefully we will see you this year. It's a fun tournament. I am busy working on Prizes now.
3 of my cousins and their parents used to do SCA
I got to watch them practis at home it was fun to watch
Sorry for the late reply. My helm was made in 1993-4 by Master Chirhart and Baron Heinrich of Bright Hills. They don't work together any more.
Tragically, he did NOT show. SirCorby, you would have known if he did. You would have heard his crys of pain even 600 miles away :)
There are oafs in every art. You do not see aimless swinging in this video, and this is a BLOOPER reel. I also note that when moderately skilled SCA guys go and play in other WMA stuff, they usually rise to the top of the competition pretty quickly. Full speed training has its powerful benefits.

VERY entertainig. Thanks for sharing this.
Hahaha. Thanks for sharing. *doesn't heavy fight, but it's still neat to watch* XD
@Ketilbiorn They are NOT wearing "a gambeson and a surcoat with helmet". And I did not say "don't step back."
Oh, believe me, that back cut was intentional. Thanks.
the biggest difference would be the armour and the amounts of bows/ranged weapons on the battle field.
Hah, good video for those of us who haven't entered combat yet. I'm not quite old enough nor do I have the recources to begin right now, but studying things like this helps a lot =)
Just one question...why no ducking/dodging?
yes you can though I've never been a member I have been to several functions and people of all backgrounds are members.
@Ketilbiorn Blocking requires less energy. Remember these people are wearing significant amounts of armor.
that was fun. Miss it.

never bring a sword to a gun fight....
On the "block don't duck" it looked like the man in red hit the man in checkers quite well across the head while avoiding being hit himself.
Did I miss something?
I am confused as to why he should have blocked.

Great stuff
@skaboss3178 Definitely intentional. Poleaxes had large spikes on the opposite side from the hammer/axe head. Nasty weapon.
I agree with Christian...Get a lanyard or go play outside!
@hamscum i wouldnt say so i can do a full back tuck in my armor so im sure someone could kick if they tried its just not allowed
LordDraco, you know SCA fighters aren't allow to deliberately hurt their opponents. And the way a lot of theses guys talk down about Us, I can't see any of them being worried about injuries in any case ;)
Thought it seemed a little rude of me to question that :p

I'd hate for you guys to miss each other!
when fighting with boffer-weapons that's a great way of fighting since you're nimble and light and don't have to worry about anything in the world except getting hit :P
Hmmm...the people in this video might not know that. These are not boffers, but rather solid sticks of rattan.
Where are all these folks now, I wonder?
OMG very funny hope to see you guys at pensic 40
And pray tell, who is "WE" and could you post some video of your methods for fighting FULL speed FULL contact with it, as the ability to do so without causing serious injury, especially while wearing only "light leathers" is the sort of skill that should be demonstrated to the world.
So, William, you mean to say there's not a single picture of you anywhere on the web?
@SirCorby
Hell, I did Kali, and you can get knocked the hell out when you've got a full suit of kendo armor and a suit of standard martial art stuff (padded helmets and gloves and stuff) under the kendo. And kali sticks are a lot smaller and lighter than the shit these guys have. Gonna agree with you here.

Ducking is terrible in ANY situation. You expose your lower back and your neck. You also can't see where you are striking or going. The enemy can easily just bash you down or block your attacks with a shield and thrust his sword into your spine and bam, you're dead.
I'm still learning and I tihnk I can admit to a few of these haha.
@SirCorby
Full speed and contact certainly does have importance, as does realistic/accurate technique and form. To answer your question, yes, WMA students certainly do both, at least in the school I attend. What we don't do is worry about politics, whose outfit looks better, what "title" we hold, etc.

@Steve Shurtleff I'm just catching up here. Have you tried the full contact game as practiced by the Armored Combat League/IMCF/Battle of the Nations/HMB (etc)? What is your opinion there?
It was simply not the thing to do in that situation. Always better to keep your weapon in front of you.
Very amusing, but as a smaller fighter (well, mid-sized--I'm only 6' after all...) I have to dispute one of your suggestions. BY ALL MEANS, get in close to the big fighters! If you don't, they'll ding you before you can touch them! *grumbles*
This is just as reasonable as suggesting that football defensive linemen would be more effective if they used cricket bats to block passes.
@malave31 Not quite. The guy in checkers jacked the guy who ducked with a return stroke.
u know i lurned some of those the hard way thanks 2 my friend jesse aka Felix
Your name is really familiar. Did you participate in Tarl's polearm tourney this year?
In western europe ofcourse :D but we wear full armor platings and good shields the Czech blacksmiths are the best... and quite expensive but it's worth it.
Now for my defence: fighting in full armor is good for muscles and prepares u for long fights like our best reenact: Grunwald, have u heard? probably not :(
look at the sites from hammaborg and ucc-hamburg, it s interesting for all sword fighter
Ok, it's 2021. Is the SCA worth getting involved with nowadays? Be honest, I'm genuinely interested.
3:02 Beautiful!
This is a fight practice. They are developing technique.
Hm.. Talking from a european swordfighter's (training from lichtenauer's techniques) I'm really interested in how these techniques work. They seem somewhat odd to me.
Is it just a new kind of sport, or do you use different techniques?
Just being curious, would love to join in on an sca-battle when I'm back in the states :)
Because this sport was developed before the popularization of historical techniques with HEMA etc, a lot of the techniques were developed by trial-and-error or adaption of other martial arts and principles of physics and ergonomics. AS such drastically different styles were developed all over the world. There are regional styles and those favored by certain households. Since there are no weight or size classes or restrictions, different body types can be matched against each other, with differing styles and techniques that serve each type.
If you search RUclips for things like "sca fighting technique" you chould find bunches of videos that eplain the techniques people use.
BTW, there are SCA groups in Europe. go to www.sca.org" and look for the link to "find local group."
haha this was great ive had this shit happen to me amillion times
Google is a wonderful thing. RUclips won't let me put a link here but search for "SCA Group Phoenix"
Wait, "Sir" Corby. Not sure if thats just a name, or are you actually a knight in the SCA? If so, My appologies. :)
@flibbertygibbet Not this year. Several years in the past though. In 2009 I was 5th, I think. Sad that I took too long a break.
haha...
nice video!
I wish there was a way for me to participate in something like this in India but the idea itself is soo farfetched it saddens me :(
the closest I can get to this is to duel with semi-interested friends of mine with wooden swords that I made...
@Emanusmell thats wat full sized battles are for
thanks for the load of "you suck". let these guys learn.
@Emanusmell Trust me when I say there is quite a bit of 'passion and intensity' on the battlefield. In fact, I've seen people with so much 'passion and intensity' that they forget to go drink and faint dead away from dehydration.
If that sorta commitment isn't 'passion and intensity' I don't know what is. ^^
Why couldn't you duck? Looked like a good move to me.
That big guy on the right at 3:30 looks scary. Thank God I fight in Ohio.
bludba"whatever", but now i think he won't see this post and i wrote it for nothing
@Raawrbert reading your comment it seems they didnt want you back not because you "beat their champion" but because you weren't playing by their rules.
