if you've ever tried to get a household name registered, they make it extremely difficult and youhave to use word combinations that would be used in a specific place and period. the reason i dont like the sca so much is the majority of people ARE cat nerd types or princess bride obsessed nerds which damper the authenticity for me. also theres lots of red and black heraldic devices and tons of purple. id say a good 20 percent of people are concerned with authenticity. but in reality, its just a fantasy larp group that has no relevance to the medieval period.

Good for them! The SCA is about fun and fellowship and learning too. The A in SCA doesn't stand for authenticity. actually, castles do come from England "The castle as we know it today was introduced into England in 1066 during the Norman invasion led by William the Conqueror. After their victory at the Battle of Hastings, the Normans settled in England." even tho France's "castle" was made in 1519 and if you want to get really technical the oldest and largest castle in the world is the Citadel of Aleppo located in the very old city of Aleppo, Syria, built around 3000 BC. but they're really not a lot of records of it

Like any organization, the members of your local group will determine it's attitude and overall health. I encourage you to give it a try for a year and decide then if you want to continue based on how well you are welcomed and how much you enjoy your new relationships. Just remember it is an alternative sub-culture and operates in different social norms that you may be familiar with. I am a former 10 year member of the SCA.
It would be great to have a well filmed insider account documentary of the SCA, it might help people find it if you put SCA in the title. I certainly would have clicked on it earlier if I had known in was an SCA documentary project. Let me know when you are fundraising again. Cheers!

There are plenty of precautions that the SCA takes to make sure that child abusers don't get access to children. On the short of it, there are more child abusers in the catholic church, then there are in the SCA.
Many people in SCA have a military/martial arts background. You don't just wander onto the battlefield; you must be certified. I dove into that thirty years ago; and didn't regret a MOMENT! Now retiring; I'm heading BACK!
I happened to be in the SCA mostly do archery their my parents who happen to be falconers do bring the birds with them mostly been going to Lilies War every year.
If this film were to have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting made, you'd have to become a full-blooded SCAdian, because it would be Society members funding it. The film-maker has a decidedly outsider's perspective. For example, people fight because they love to fight, not because five years down the road they might get some recognition. I get it and I'm not a fighter. This film-maker doesn't seem to get it. BTW, at least one full-length SCA film has been made (I'd have to search for the link), not that it couldn't or shouldn't be done again, I'm just not sure this is the guy to do it.
Watch George Romero's "Knightriders"; he attended an SCA event in Philadelphia, fell in love with the idea of the SCA, and decided to make a movie. He had to throw in motorcycles in order to sell it, though

The "price to join"? Well... There is a membership you can get from the SCA, Inc (see sca (dot) org for details), but it isn't required to participate. Generally, the way you get involved is to find a group of the SCA local to you (and we have groups in every state of the US, most Canadian provinces, all over Australia and New Zealand, in many places in Europe, and in a variety of other locations around the globe), get in contact with them, and start attending local meetings, practices, or events. With in-person events almost entirely on hiatus due to pandemic, there's been a lot more going on virtually, which means it's easier to connect with people even if you're geographically not close to an SCA group. Try starting with sca (dot) org (slash) new-to-the-sca for both more information about the organization as well as a way to find groups close to you.
Why blame the entire sca for things that happen, not everyone in the SCA is like that, in fact most of us are pretty darned honest and noble people. When I first joined I was treated like family right away. They fed me, clothed me for the events, and even let me settle in their camp for a couple of nights. If things like that really have happened you should keep blame off of the sca and arrest the indivdual who is responsible. The sca is not responsible for a single person's actions...

I've been in the SCA for years and have never seen a child being abused. If this happened it was probably what we call a Mundane someone who isn't a member and is only visiting an Event. We've had Mundanes bring Illegal drugs to our Events and have escorted them from the Event.
For those who don't know "Ollaimh" is from Canada (supposedly) probably lied about that. Is there some way to keep him from posting on here so we don't have to put up with his harrassment.

It's not that we attack the criticizer, it's the fact that 99% of the time people who suddenly pop up out of nowhere to call SCA members names and give it a bad name end up being people that got banned from the sport....like all those child molesters you mentioned. As for the lawsuit, you are correct. The SCA settled out of court because the lawyers said it would cost the same to win the case as it would to settle.
HAVE to say one thing about your people saying that the knight is the goal of the middle ages martial arts. They forget about the MASTER of ARMS! I'm a squire in the service of a master. The biggest difference is the vow to the crown, A master makes his vow to the populace, In regalia, he wears the white baldric and no chain around his neck. The knight wears a white belt and wears a chain around his neck. Why don't they ever mention this!?
Hey, I'm a child in the SCA. Child abusa happens when kids get up in armor and fight each other. Its got child hard suits. Sometimes we don't play in armor, just for fun play.

At 7:00 the guy says that rattan is a member if the bamboo family. It is not. It is a type of palm.
I only mention it because rattan is solid-core, whereas bamboo is hollow. If someone were to try to use bamboo, they could get very badly hurt.
