What I think is fun, is that right in that emergence sequence, the music starts to sound a lot like kaiju music. Like it's a living monster arising from the ground.
I remember watching the cartoon Star-Blazers when I was growing up, and still the biblical power of the Wave Motion Gun astounds me, model rendering on the Yamato, the film makers executed it Perfectly, and the uniform designs borrow themselves very well from the original animation :-)
I remember watching Star Blazers when I was in high school. It was certainly an original departure from traditional sci-fi fare and I enjoyed the series in it's translated version. This scene perfectly transferred Yamato (called Argo in Star Blazers), the captain and crew, even the firing sequence of the terrifying Wave Motion Gun to live action.
it diverted quite a bit, they didnt even test the wave motion gun until jupiter, they change Susumu to a scavanger instead of an active member of the EDF and move the craft from iscandar to earth not mars, the movie also makes Iscandarians and gamilans, unlike the anime where the gamilans are former abducties of them from when they had there own empire. over all its a well done movie but quite different in delivery and plot to the origional series. there is also the fact they made the gamilans a hive mind race too
I so dig this movie having Yamato even pull off a Battlestar Galactica style Adama Manuever. Not merely to launch fighter craft but to full on blast away directly at the planet beneath them.
I absolutely LOVE Battlestar Galactica. The original series was so great, as were Buck Rogers, Manimal, Automan, The A Team, and the Six million Dollar man. I didn't like the remake of Battlestar as well, but the OG is so great.
@@BossLevel16 Well both 'Galactica's' were OF their time FOR their time. In Adama's words "context matters". I'm geared up to see what this next incarnation of BSG will be like.
There was a remake of the 1977 Battlestar Galactica that had no redeeming characters, nobody you really like and want to root for, and it really just sucked.
Harvey Odie Nugroho 1014065 3 months ago Missile totally got what it deserved! I seriously doubt an Imperial Star Destroy or even the Death Star itself could withstand against the powerful deadly force of a Wave Motion Gun! I LOVE THE YAMATO!!! She's a good ship with a good crew.
agree. the requirement of a mechanical element to firing helped ground some of the sci-fy silliness. i love that all versions show the chamber firing. was great to see in live-action finally
I wish I could have seen it on the big screen. I read in a deep dive that the power signature of the WMG can be detected on the other side of the galaxy. That's more than the power of an exploding star.
That's actually a plot point. The destructive power of the wave motion gun is treated as an absolute last resort, to only be used when nothing else will work, because of how dangerous it is. Had they used it recklessly, making the trip to Iskandar would have earned the Yamato's crew nothing, and the Earth would have died. Heck, Super Robot Wars V incorporates this into the game, with only the final stage, when the heroes must reach Earth by any means necessary, allowing players to freely use the wave motion gun. Until then, it's only used in scripted events.
Im usually a fan of dub, but having seen this in a few languages, the Japanese voice cast changes this from a beautiful scene, to one of the best ever. Awesome
Although it was super cool watching the wave motion gun, the shock cannons probably could have downed that missle. I still loved when they used it on a Gamalon warship... the shock cannons tore through it like tissue paper. The crew couldn't believe it.😀
Could probably deflect a single reactor ignition from the Death Star. You're gonna need a dozen along side Andromeda to probably repel a shot at full power.
@@stephenbyrne2170 A dozen so like 12 or so ships. One for each of the 8 outer lasers and about 4 for the big centre laser with at least one Andromeda Class with the duel wave motion gun.
3:18 This guy looks like he's lifted straight from the cartoon. They did such a good job transferring the cartoon into live action. The casting was nearly perfect, and the rendering of the Yamato and the soundtrack was just perfect. Enough to satisfy all the fans. The rest of the movie kinda sucked, but they got this part right.
The Wave motion gun requires significant amounts of the ship to dedicate its systems to. The Cannons are for conventional battles and combat. Along with the torpedos, point defence systems. The wave motion gun is meant to be used as a assault weapon. The ships ftl systems are required to use the Wave motion gun.
Because they are used in ship to ship battle while the wave motion gun recharges. They were not used in this scene but they get plenty of use later on in the movie.
Such a beautifully shot movie let down entirely by one of the worst scripts I've ever seen in film. This could have been so great, but it fell so flat in the WORST way. Just once I'd like to see one of these Leiji-based films understand the arc of character, of story, of how to pace a scene, of how to make the ship as much a character as everyone else involved. There're great actors in this film and they're in a damn powerful scene as its potential goes, but they're just not given the script to really let it soar.
They have to shove a 20 plus episode series down into the the length of a 120min film, of course they’re going to comprise a lot of things. The story and pacing are most affected.
The entire launch sequence was breathtaking, but I think that the most impressive part was Yamato’s 18 inch gun turrets rotating into position.
When the ship is 534 meters long?

The team made this understand what the fans are looking for. The ship reveal, the timing for the theme to kick in, the firing sequence. chef kiss.
can we the audience simply enjoy the scene without your 3rd party approval of the scene?
