  • PART 1
Welcome to a new series of restoration work being carried out on this 2001 E39 M5.
It belongs to a Redish staff member - James P - our Service Manager who's been with us since 2017.
James P has owned this E39 M5 since 2014 and uses it as a daily along with his E90 M3.
In fact, James P has quite a cool collection of 4x M Power vehicles (the other 2 being E34 M5 LE's - one of which we're restoring and creating another upcoming YT series on).
James P was happy with the external body and paint on his M5 but could see some basic corrosion beginning to form around the Rear Sills & Rear Jacking Points.
So it was decided these would be tackled and we all hoped it would be surface corrosion that could be removed, treated, and protected.
WOW, were we in for a shock!
Not only did both Rear Jacking Points crumble away to reveal great big holes, but then he pulls out all the stops and instructs us to remove all the rear running gear and 'Save This Chassis' once and for all.

"Oh Christ" 😂 that's the only time I've heard anything approaching a swear on your videos. I would be swearing left and right at that poor chassis. In fact, I had approximately that reaction when I realized the floor was totally rotted out on my girlfriend's X3, due to leaking vapor barriers on the rear doors for years.
Great video, excited for the progression.

@@RedishMotorsportbmw Thanks, I welded in some sheet metal and a replacement diagonal cross bar under the left side rear floor made from angle iron. Not something I'm keen to share, lol. But at least the rockers and inner frame rails are still extremely solid. BMW overbuilt these things. I come from Subarus and this amount of rust would have been a death sentence for the chassis.

Thank you for this. I went to see an E39 the other day, outwardly it looked superb, looking at the sills told an identical story to this video. Thanks for highlighting this 👍👍

Excellent, excellent video - If only some owners realised the extent that corrosion can take hold, it wouldn't get to this stage and more of these cars would be on the road.

@@RedishMotorsportbmw Excellent ,I already talked to a sea freight company and shipping the car to the UK and back to Canada is really not that bad ,money wise. The nice thing is your City/town Bristol has a sea port and the car will arrive there in a container so it should be easy to retrieve. The car is a 2000 M5 with 140k kms with the dreaded front jacking point corrosion and some rust starting in other parts of the rocker panels. Honestly been wanting to send it to you for 2 years now so let me take care of shipping details and i'm thinking September or October she will go on her makeover holiday. Btw I will be the first!
