(453) Make a Cutaway Lock in 45 min With NO Power Tools

- I wanted to see how easy it would be to make a serviceable cutaway lock with only a finger file and a hacksaw (high polish optional!). It turned out WAY better than I’d hoped and I’ll be making more. Go make one yourself; I’d love to hear how yours turns out :-)
Remember: only pick locks that are yours and that are not in use! Keep locksport legal!

Lock Noob if i was a bit better with my hands i would probably give it a go, so well documented and explained!
Thanks for the video, have some friends and family interested in the sport of picking so a few of these will be great birthday presents with a nice set of picks
I just can't do it. The channel dug by the saw is 1mm wide and the files just don't fit.
I also bought the Draper files, the same ones you use in the video and can't get through the channel.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks 4 the reply... I just ruined a good brand new Facchinetti cylinder and buyed a Multipick training cutaway lock -_-
Looks beautiful! I may have a go to rescue my trapped/seized ABUS Extra Classe. After conversion to cutaway, how would you judge its usefulness for practice? I.e., does the cutaway interfere with lockpicking "feel" realism?
This is a great video. Ever since Bill left RUclips, you have done a wonderful job of insuring no void is left in content encouraging folks to go beyond just picking locks.
I just want to add that brass shavings are a mess that can cause some pretty bad problems. You really should use PPE. Even when using simple hand tools. I often end up getting very bad migraines after working with brass if I don't use PPE. A simple mask (or even bandanna worn around the nose and mouth) will prevent breathing in the dust particles. Also glove to prevent transferring the dust from you fingers to your face and micro cuts cause if you try to wash them off you hands. Eye protection is a must when working with any metal!
Absolutely brilliant mate!! The results speak for themselves, I have no need for a cutaway lock, but I will be making one tomorrow now anyways, thanks for sharing this bud. It's going to help a LOT of people out!! :) :) Awesome stuff :) :)
Thanks dude :-)
Wow, awesome job LN. Your attention to detail is second to none!
Very kind of you :-)
Wow, not only does that look beautiful but it also was way simpler than I would have expected. Love the video man and I can't wait to try this out myself. Keep it up. :)
Keep me updated on your progress :-)
Wow 🤩 what a great project 👍🏻 I’ll try to make one 😎 Thanks!
It looks great. Wonderful attention to detail. That’s why I like watching your videos. The skill at explaining what your showing makes it so easy to follow you. Thanks for your hard work and great content !!
Thank you!
That's a gorgeous looking lock. You made it look so easy, but I know how much finesse and patience it took to get it right. Brass is so soft that it's all too easy to over cut/file and mess up a project. Well done. 👏👍
Thank you :-)
Wow!!!
That is Beautiful!!!
Can’t wait to make one!
This is up there in the top 5 videos I have ever seen.
Thank you so much!!
Love it!
Chris
That’s very kind of you. Keep,us updated on your Cutaway:-)
Later the same day.
I picked a Besi cylinder that I had.
Turned out great!
Took me about two hours.
I think the brass in the Basi Lock is very hard.
Still a wonderful fun lock !
Thanks again!
Chris
Great work! :-)
Your workmanship never ceases to amaze. If I tried this then it'd end up completely doomed. Still, I may give it a shot, just to see how badly I can embarrass myself.
You never know till you know!
that was really nice, i had to watch it twice after seeing the final product. who would think its would come out that nice
Thank you :-)
Thanks Noob - that really took away some of my apprehension about doing this. I've put it off because I have got a lot of picking to do but this makes it a little but more approachable.
Thanks 🙏
Really nice looking cutaway, that is some great craftsmanship!
Thank you :-)
Great project and a great looking outcome.
Additionally, you could punch in the plugs, to replace them with blind allen screws.
Thanks! And great idea. I was going to do this, but thought I’d keep the vid focussed (this time!) :-)
Wow 😀 you make me speechless every time with your crafting :). That looks so incredible nice :). I still can't believe that this should take just 45 minutes. Absolutely cool, thank you so much for sharing buddy. Have a great weekend and keep it up :).
Thanks Foxxy, I appreciate that :-)
I made one today 😂✌, but seriously, it does take longer ;D and there is not a lot room for mistakes ;). Even I don't need a cutaway, I wanted at least to try it out and the result looks quite okay to me :) hehe, picked accidently even a cool cylinder with a lot security pins inside. 😁✌🦊
redcatimaging please can we see it on RUclips?
This is a very underrated video. I can’t find an item like this fore sale where both the upper and lower portion are cut away. Everything out there is just the upper portion cut away which I don’t see being of any real use without seeing what’s going on in the key housing
Looks amazing Ash, this will inspire loads of people to make their own!
Thanks 8 really hope so. I have seen a few very good ones already. Check out Redcatimaging and Leon’s Lock pad’s one’s :-)
Wow that is a really great Idea to share !
45 minutes "great!"
Nice thinking, great project to have a go at ;)
Go for it :-)
Great work, actually much better quality and cheaper to make then the one i got online.
That to me looks professional my friend. Very very good job. Thank you for sharing another awesome idea.
Thanks Bobby :-)
Well goodness that thing is gorgeous. I have to make one now.
Do it!!
Fantastic work, worthy of being proud of. I pretty much always have to make my own stuff (by never being able to afford anything). And I can say that I never thought of this, somehow... But after seeing how awesome yours turned out I will be hunting for and old euro lock or two to do this myself! Great job and thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you :-) report back on your success please :-)
Nice clean job... and no open wounds! yay you.
Actually, there was an open wound off camera on my right hand from earlier in the day where I trapped some skin in some sharp pliers! :-)
That was amazing - I would have never expected this to be possible with just hand tools. Great job buddy :-) BTW: I just came home from vacation today and found your package. Very nice of you my friend to send me this great present - thank you :-)
Thanks Potti314 :-) I hope you like the little gift :-)
Thx for this nice tutorial. Today, I have made my own cutaway 🙂 it works pretty good 👍 thx and greetings from Germany
Top notch craftsmanship there! I can’t imagine if I tried to do that 🤪😩
You’d be fine, just go steady :-)
Amazing video, I really appreciate you putting this idea out there. Really brings perspective to how much is possible with so little.
Thanks 😊
You just keep amazing me with your fine tooling skills. Simply outstanding
Well, I have people like yourself to draw inspiration from Tipene :-)
Fantastic video. 👏👍👍 I've seen these cut aways for a long time, but figured they were milled. It Never occurred to me to use a hacksaw and needle files. The polished contrast is really nice.
Thank you very much :-)
Absolutely loving it, especially the polished look
Me too!
That's awesome. I need to do this for future practice locks
Great work. And a cool little weekend project.
It is! Go for it! :-)
Wow absolutely amazing, the end result is perfect, really cool idea, amazing outcome, another great idea from the LockNoob Locklab.
Thanks Daz :-)
Wow, Nicely done! Looks like it come out great.
I’m really. Pleased given how little time I spent on it :-)
Very nice video 👍👍👍👌. Specially for the guys who don't have a milling machine. Keep doing this nice stuff 😊.
I’ll try :-)
Wow that turned out great, well done. I might have to try that some day.
Go for it :-)
That’s really cool, I might get me some finger files and have a go. Well done you
You really should give this a go, it’s great fun :-)
Great work buddy, Im going to make one right now, lol thanks for the inspiration buddy!
Awesome! Let me know how you got on!
I really think this is great. I'll be making one for all the locks giving me a problem. Very, very cool. Thank you for sharing.
CHEERS M8
Good luck 🤞
Fantastic job. Well done and thank you for sharing.
Thank you :-)
Nice! You make it look easy! I have to give this a try!
Go for it :-)
Love it! Like all great ideas, it's so obvious once you see it done. I have a couple of stubborn locks that I cannot pick. I'm going to give this a go, call it cheating if you like 😇. I may also cut the top of the bible and add some grub screws so I can re-pin it without gutting. Thanks for the inspiration.
I appreciate the instructional video with hand tools! Very clean work. Cutaways are going to make a great Christmas gift for my family and friends who are interested in lock picking. Merry Christmas buddy 🎅🎄
I hope you enjoy making them! Just take your time and take care
Very nice work mate. That is better than the cut away dimple lock I bought. Awesome job mate. 👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘🍻
Hope you have a go yourself :-)
Really nice, now I need to give it a shot.
Nice! I'm definitely going to try that. I've been looking at cutaways, but they are out of my budget range. I'm a case manager at a shelter for homeless senior citizens, so I don't make a boatload of money.
One awesome job my friend I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile but to see someone do it on what it looks like on the end result im going make one of these for a Lefty👍😊👍😊😎✌✌
Yours looked GREAT too :-)
Lock Noob I've just sprayed it matte black the Bible so the pins and springs will show more on camera thank you very much my friend👍😊
Great job like the polished look
Thanks you :-)
That turned out really nice! I'll have to try that.
Go for it! :-)
Ah that's fantastic i have a load of old locks i can practice this on. Saved me from spending a fortune on cut aways. thanks
Thanks :-)
thats amazing Lock Noob much better seeing the video then just the photos im really going to have to have a go at doing this but most of all i love the fact that only hand tools as thats the way i work only hand tools so thank you for sharing this with us :)
Thanks Rev :-)
Great work! Would make a wonderful gift to a noobie!
Yes it would :-)
I think you’ve started a craze amongst the locksport community! 😂🥚
I hope so :-) I know a few that have tried this now :-)
Very nicely done sir that really came out nice my friend
Thanks Bill :-)
Pretty cool. Might just try making it myself for practice.
Do it!
Absolutely Beautiful Lock Noob thanks for sharing
Thanks Iggy :-)
Excellent job, Ash. By the way... (45 mins per manufactured unit) x (8 working hours per day) x (at least 40 bugs income per unit) = You've probably mistaken your job!! 😁 Seriously, great, beautiful and inspiring job. I certainly would give it a try as soon as I could cuz I don't feel like paying $70 for a comercial cutaway lock.
Brilliant! Beautiful work friend! Now get int a lock!
Thank you :-)
That came out great. It looks like it was done on a milling machine.
Thank you !
Great result for a manual hacksaw and file. You should be chuffed.🍺😎
Yeah, it turned out better than I thought it would :-)
First rate video as always..thank you...just starting out this will be a great project
Did it!! Didn't take 45 minutes though lol. Trust me to pick one with bb plugs. Won't make that mistake again. Great tutorial!!
Fantastic! Hope it turned out good :-)
Absolutely amazing. You never fail to inspire me. 😎
Very kind of you to say :-)
You did it great Friend!
Thanks :-)
Thanks for making this, I’m excited to give it a try
Go for it
Thanks for this. Made one from a BKS euro cylinder but I'm still waiting for 4mm grub screws. Dunno how your springs stay there.
Also waiting for metal tubes and ejector pins for 3d-printed silver bullet. This hobby has transformed into tool making :D
It’s great isn’t it!
Wow,excellent job, Right on brother, great video, Great work
Thanks you :-)
"45 minutes"
you clearly overestimated how sharp my hacksaw blade is...
Lol 😆
who said, there are no miracles? Damn this stuff is awesome. THANK YOU.
Thank you :-)
Very, very nice -- looks like factory cutaway, but no, even better with nice polish -- Good Job!
Thank you :-)
Nice one Lock Noob I am looking to try and make one of these
Go for it :-)
Excellent as always keep up all the good work
Thanks; I’ll try :-)
Newbie, here. Color me jealous. That's so beautiful.
Thank you so much :-)
Very nicely done. 😎
Thanks :-)
Lock turned out great. i think it could be a great training lock for picking "spools", "serrated", "barrel" and etc type pins. more so than the "plastic type" that you really can not "see
through" anyway. As you watch the pins you could train your hand and fingers to feel what you are seeing. YEP! i can see it now on the Sparrows website....... "The Noob" Teaching your hand to feel what your eyes see! Order now for the Christmas holiday.......Hay Mr. Lock, thanks for sharing, i enjoyed the video.
Thanks Marty :-)
That was very good Noob 👍🏻
Gonna have a bash at this!
Go for it!
I have wanted to make a cutaway. I have a Dangerfield in SC key way but I just wanted another. I planned on using a dremmel or something. Now that I see it done I think I'll be more confidant I can pull it off. I have a couple single profile cylinders that are already grub screwed from the factory. If I did a KIK, I'd tap it for grub screws.
This came out amazingly!
Great tutorial my friend, very cool cutaway lock, pretty fun project! thanks for showing ;o)))
Thank you Tallan :-)
Wonderful result. Question, when you sawed off the cylinder, did it have the c-clip on it?
Excellent job!!
Thanks :-)
Nicely done 😊
Thanks 🙏
A job well done 😁👍🏻
Thanks :-)
Absolutely sweet!
Thank you
Just blown away👍
Thanks :-)
A work of art
Thank you 🙏
great detailed tutorial well done
Thanks :-)
AWESOME idea!!! I would love to try this, but how do we know how deep to cut?
Awesome. I'mma make one tonight!
Do it!
Bloody brilliant. That is amazing work. I'm definitely trying this 👍👍
I really hope you do. Keep me updated with your success :-)
Thanks as always for the great video. I really liked the idea so I've just tried it out... Sadly I really messed it up sawing sideways and obviously I had to throw away the cylinder. I feel so ashamed after seeing you pull it off so nicely.
There is no shame; none at all! You tried, you learned and you’ll try again and learn more and probably end up with something great :-)
Amazing job.
Thanks 😊
I'm gonna make something similar, but w/ the power tools. Thx for the idea🙏
Cool! Let me know how it goes
Impressive! Thank you!
Thanks :-)
Bloody fantastic!
Thank you :-)
I know I am a couple of years late to the party but thanks for the video, it produced a beautiful "training" lock and a mountain of envy all in under 9 minutes ;) I honestly don't think my hands are steady enough to replicate this but I can appreciate it. Just one query, did you make, buy or improvise the plug mounting block that you used here?
Good work. Those cuts are pretty darn accurate for working by hand. I’m suspicious .....
I always wanted a see-through lock for pick practice. Why not make my own?
The secret is to use a fresh, sharp, tight blade; measure 10 times and cut once and of course, correct your cuts when filing to even them
