  • After the 567 did its limits with the SD35 and GP35, the succesful era of EMD kept on with its EMD 645 and the new models, like the SD40 and GP38. As we began to be railfans, most of us taught that this two models had a very diferent engine, because of the deeper sound of the SD40-2. The main difference between this locomotives was the turbocharger of the SD40/SD40-2, among the heavy weight and its C-C trucks made this model most powerful and better for heavier trains.
    I hope you enjoy this little comparison between those sounds, gretings!

    La GP38 el sonido es por sus ventiladores Roots y la SD es por el turbo....pero ambos es un sonido hermoso

    The SD40-2 has such a sweet deep engine & the Turbo just sounds amazing, probably the best Engine sound in any Locomotive in the world, wish we had them in the UK

    El mismo caso sucede en Argentina con las EMD G22 contra Las EMD GT22, una tiene turbo y la otra no, obviamente asi como la GP38, la G22 suena espectacular, no tiene comparacion en el mundo. Saludos!

      @@sullybiker6520 well that’s because the EMD 645s in the GP40-2 and the SD40-2 are turbocharged but the one in the GP38 is not as it has a roots blown aspiration. That’s why it sounds like a naturally aspirated engine.

    What are the visual differences between the sd40 and gp38?

    • @DMP_Ferrocarriles
      @DMP_Ferrocarriles  2 месяца назад +1

      The main difference is their trucks, all SD series has 3 axle trucks while the GP series has only 2 axles per truck. It is also notorious that SD40 is way longer than the GP38, a little bit taller and it has 5 roof fans, the GP38 only has 3.

    • @atrainlife
      @atrainlife 2 месяца назад

      @@DMP_Ferrocarriles thank you so much for the reply! After your reply i looked up the length of both, SD40 = 70ft vs GP38=59ft, is that difference of 11ft (assuming its correct) really considered "way longer" than the GP38?

    • @atrainlife
      @atrainlife 2 месяца назад

      @@DMP_Ferrocarriles the reason for my questions, is that I am making a brio-style wooden toy trains of the trains from the unstoppable movie for my son, the blue and grey ones confused me as they are sometimes referenced online as SD40 and sometimes referred to as "GP38-style". For the toy, the length needs to be shortened anyway, but I would still like to refer to the correct train when abstracting it for my toy design. Thanks again for the very helpful and kind reply, greetings from London!

    • @DMP_Ferrocarriles
      @DMP_Ferrocarriles  2 месяца назад

      Well, may be I went too far with "way longer", I apologize, let's say just longer, and yes those are the right lenghts. I like the idea of the toy, hope you can upload a video when you finish it to see it! The "AWVR 1206" is an SD40-2, i assume that's the engine you are making, by the way, there is a scene where 2 engines got derailed when trying to stop the train, they are SD40-2 too. I dont't remember any GP38 in the movie. Greetings from Mexico! Im glad to help you!
