Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of trains with a strong focus on the Northeast USA.
The goal is for you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.. A major infusion of knowledge in just a few minutes.. And if those few minutes distilled some of the best railroad information in the industry, we feel that we've done our job..
The trick is clarity.. Clear, concise and on point.. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe (in that order!).

The SD40-2 as well as SD40T-2 and the C30-7.....it amazes me how the SDs and C30-7 models still run in South America....some C30-7 models still in BN paint in broad gauge....
The SD 40-2 is my favorite model of the locomotive
It doesn't matter how many locomotives ge and other biulders come out with. YOU WILL NEVER BEAT THE EMD SD40-2SAND THE SD40S. THESE LOCOMOTIVES HAVE WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME!THEY ARE WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR ABILITY TO HAUL HEAVY TRAINS UP A GRADE. THEY ARE VERY RELIABLE, EASY TO MAINTAIN, EASY TO OPERATE, AND THEY ARE VERY DEPENDABLE LOCOMOTIVES!EMD HAS A REAL WINNER IN THE SD40/40-2S. I REMEMBER WHEN THIS LOCOMOTIVE FIRST CAME OUTOF EMD BACK IN THE LATE 60S. I GOT A CHANCE TO RIDE IN ONE ON THE L&N RAILROAD. I WONT EVER FORGET THAT NUMBER SHE HAD, SHE WAS NUMBER 1258, THE FORST ONE I RODE IN. THESE GIRLS CAN PULL A FREIGHT! GET YOU FOUR OF THESE, AND THEY WILL LIFT TONNAGES OVER GRADES AND AT SPEEDS NO OTHER LOCOMOTIVE CAN MATCH. SHE HAS PROVEN TO BE A GREAT AND VERY RELIABLE LOCOMOTIVE. I LIKE THEM.AND IM SURE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO OPERATE THEM LIKE THEM,TOO..❤
RIGHT ON BROTHER
And the fact they are still out there running strong 😎
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Used to hear them at full throttle while waiting at a road crossing in my home town.
Later, I was lucky to be part of the maintenance crew for them.
We had Alco's, GE's and EMD's.
The EMD's were by far the coolest to work with.
the SD40-2 has set the standards for locomotive reliability across the world, to this day and beyond.
The SD40-2 is my all time favorite locomotive!
SD40-2s are the *G O A T*
I read an article once in an issue of CTC Board magazine from the late '90s or early 2000s. in that article was 2 or 3 candid interviews with veteran engineers in which they asked them point blank "who builds em better..?" I remember one of the engineer's responses particularly in which he talked about how "both brands built locomotives with capabilities far beyond what they would have ever thought possible." he went on to say : "but if you wanna talk quality, craftsmanship, ease of repairs, great operating characteristics, & ease of operation.... well then you're obviously talking about the SD40-2." & I remember his next statement vividly..... "they were as close to perfect as it ever got.!"
To me, they are the most popular and most reliable diesels in the world today.these emd locomotives has a very good reputation for reliability, trouble free , ease of maintenance, and quality they offer, more than ant other builders locomotives. You just can't beat them for their quality, their reliability, their ease of maintenance. ILL TAKE THEM OVER ANY OTHER LOCOMOTIVE BUILDER,ANY DAY!I CALL THEM,

I love that sound when they throttle up, that whistle sound accompanying the diesel groan
That opening run-by has great, classic EMD sound. Accept no substitutes.
50 years and still going strong
Your attention to minute detail is most appreciated 👍!
I appreciate that!
nothing sounds as amazing as the SD40s..
Been told by a crew member for CP that they rode smoothly and were extremely reliable. Great video AC!
I still can't get over how reliable the SD40-2 is compared to some of EMD's newer diesel
You Learn more on this Channel than we did with some Subjects in the Classroom while growing up. 😬 Thanks AC. 👍🙏
Just such a bad ass engine. Pull whatever you want, reliable, and beautiful.
We have SD40 variants in the UK 🙂 they sound great on full power
class59's are true copies 16-645e3's in them.
A great deal of research and work went into this excellent video. Thanks from Canada!
Here in Australia we had 2 versions of the SD 40. In Western Australia, the L class, not sure how many, but a few, some are still around, but a lot have been scrapped, and in Victoria, the C class, only 10 were built, and all 10 are still working. They were built by Clyde Engineering. They were shorter and lighter, due to some weight and dimension problems. But a much revered locomotive here in Australia.
nothing like and SD40-2 in full throat!!!
The GP38-2s that are actually depowered GP40/-2s are usually left with the turbos, but the shafts have been pinned so that the turbo can't overrun and thus it remains a simple air pump. This is why you might notice a unit designated a "GP38-2" might have a turbo sound at idle.
Loved running those SD40-2s!!! That was one hell of a great locomotive!
you forgot to mention the differences between the standard SD series and the DASH 2 series. The one well liked improvement was a water sight glass on the engineer side toward the rear of the long hood. The ripped supports along the blower housing and the slight overhand of the cab's angler roof. This and the new longer truck designs. Hope this helps.
and the window to see it without opening the door also.
Not to mention the adhesion difference with wheel slip control.
@@erbewayne6868 forgot about the HT-C truck.
Thanks for all the hard work. My first nice model engine was an Athrean SD 40-2. In 86
I wish they run all the emd more often. Even the large class emds. I'm a huge fan of emds!!!! I hate seen them sit and wasting away. And plz bring back the sd 45!!!!!!
Wow! What a thorough overview. Thank you! SD/GP dash 2s are my favorite. Once you get to know the module test points values, they're pretty good to troubleshoot. Just as I was getting better with them, they started replacing with computers 😅. I do miss "T" motors. Reminds me of Southern Pacific, my favorite RR
You know, when it comes to rail historians, you have no equal. Just outstanding work. Thank you.
The EMD 6Axel.was alot of traction motors to run properly by a seasoned veteran engineer especially fitted with all the electronic ability to operate remote to give theese trains the combinations to.push-pull as the newest packages were able to offer in the 90s
Nothing like 4 or 5 sd40s going to work on a tonnage train
Loved it. I had to watch it all over again.. Excellent video AC.
Bravo Man!!!!! You are absolutely one of the best locomotive and railroad historians I have ever heard!!!
Thank you!
Its wonderful to see the Deleware&Hudson &Conrail which I worked for!
What a series. Outstanding work.
you cant go wrong with an sd40-2 on your roster i have 10 on my n scale layout and one canadian sd40-2w. these were the work horse's of american railroad. cant forget also the sd40t-2 tunnel motor locomotives
Nice i have 6 on my n scale
The "CP Rail" train was actually a D&H train, they were considered D&H up to SK Yard until D&H was officially merged into CP and no longer a subsidiary. The PLM units were around until the late 90's at least.
The CNJ-LV wreck was Dec. 26, 1965. Three LV C628s with 155 cars collided with a CNJ train that was delivering two new L&HR C420s. The CNJ train had 32 cars, but I'm not sure if the L&HR units were considered cars or locomotives in the train. I think they were dead-in-tow.
The fog was thick and the CNJ ran threw the red signals witch caused the wreck.
you are number 1 When it Comes to Filming Trains i Loveyou AC
The British Class 59 and the later Class 66 are based on this locomotive. They are scaled down for the British loading gauge and have cabs on both ends.
Wow I learned so much
I never knew that that was the same PLM that leases trailers I also have towed a lot of them around over the years all reefer units
Another over looked fleet of SD40-2s is the Wisconsin and Southern.
well in my book they out done them when the sd40s came on line there was nothing like them they had power and a sound of there own
Wow 555 SD-40 locomotives that's a lot I never thought that they would have that many
Thanks Mr AC. For your fantastic presentation. You should go ride the x NS office train reading northern this weekend
So much information, it makes my head hurt.
Great video!
Thanks!
I was an Engineer on PC & Conrail. Juanita is pronounced wahnita (sorry) Great video. I did enjoy it and the work you put in it. Keep the dirty side down in your travels.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I like how you pronounced GATX. When My friend and I first saw one in the 1990's, we nicknamed them 'Gay-tex'. Great video series.I note: The 'wider' smoke stack was designed for turbo charged exhaust and was a different design than the non-turbo charged smoke stacks. They were not simply widened.
Beginning of the Comfort Cab
Can you do a video about SD-70s just started working with them but finding out information is proving to be extremely hard
need to start with the SD60's first, the 70's are an evolution of the 60.
SD 40-2's reign supreme. Nothing to this day has dupicated the performance and longevity of this classic.
It's a shame the railroads let these fine locomotives fall apart due to deferred maintenance.
Awesome 👍
Thanks.
It appears that these units would have had room to put a bunk or living quarters behind the cab. I think I've seen this with Australian locomotives.
The area directly behind the cab is full of electrical components and the inertial filter cabinet so it is very full of wiring and ducts.
Wow.
Illinois Central Railroad GP40x 3075 is the prototype GP40
Is it Ferromex?🤔🚂🇲🇽( 21.. thank you for this doc! VERY thorough👍🏻🚂
Good Morning AC!!
Ytp 15 year insurance write off ends and railroads be like:
"Yeah thats cool but gimmie that sweet SD70/C44-9W sksksksksk"
It's safe to say that eventually in the future when every unit is only Wabtec/GE there will still be GP40-2's & SD40-2's leftover given prolonged usage.I wouldn't be surprised that those units will outlive any of these modern EMD & GE rebuilds in which most of them aren't even that great anyways.Even though resorted to being road switchers most of the time nowadays,it still counts.
EMD began to go downhill after discontinuing both series of units because everything else they possibly have manufactured after that has always created problems here and there. The major issue was inevitably these emissions regulations.
While Wabtec/GE has surpassed CAT/EMD in the traction category they've retained with traction motors that load quickly, both DC & AC.Obviously the main factor is that the EMD 567,645,and 710 series don't catch on fire or fall apart like GE's 7FDL's & 7HDL's.
This about sums up the only pros that EMD units have upheld over GE units in the long run.The only true error that I can think of on newer EMD units that absolutely sucks is their dynamic braking.
Aside from those units, the other reliable units I personally will add are the MP15DC's/AC's which have always been great road switchers.
At some point that's how things will be,the majority of EMD units will be tracksided for local jobs and road switching while the hard work with serious tonnage and dealing with rough terrain will be handed over to Wabtec/GE.
That photo is from Albany NY. I used to live in the Capital District
Id like to see the PennCentral that has been running with Norfolk and Southern and twice ive seen it running point..as it blended right in with tjhe N& S paint
I dont know how many Penn Central locos survived?
The EMD SD40-2 is my favorite diesel-electric locomotive. I'm trying to learn as much about this amazing diesel-electric engine as I can. Can anyone enlighten me on the difference between the SD40-2 and the SD40T-2? Is the SD40T-2 a "special duty" version of the SD40-2? What does the "T" in SD40T-2 stand for? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide on the AWESOME SD40-2.
The "T" in SD40T-2 stands for "Tunnel motor"
Thanks.
AC i get your voice mixed up woth Delay in Block proudctions
truly sorry for the mixup But You " Without a Doubt", can give the A toZ on any railroad I am truly sorry for the mixup!
👍
Hi AC GLad to see Anoghter Video Amazing They Have Train Magazine in walmart Store But it Don't say Trains21 on it
I thought Burlington Northern owned the most units
There are those who do love the NS livery
Tcdd de 24000 is the god of diesel locomoti es
please can you talk about indian locomotives??
Don't know much about them. But I'll see what I can do.
@@Trains21 I'm also from India, by watching your videos, I get so many information of US railroads. Please make a video over the Locomotives of Indian Railways. But sadly Indian Railways is purging out their Diesel locomotives from their roster. And now, no new Diesel locomotives are manufactured. Indian Railways is much more interested in electric locomotives, hence a much more environmentally friendly locomotives to be built for the entire IR system.
I'm from the U.S. and have alot of respect for Indian Railways. Any country that produces their own locomotives is a winner in my book. Especially since the Alco 251 series prime mover was and still is utilized in India.

Ese atuendo me vuelve loco fukada-jpp.monster loco contigo y tienes ese cuerpo curvilíneo, hiciste un buen trabajo modelándolo también. También me gusta el último atuendo. Me encantaw cómo los cinturones de liga se.
The best sounding

3 rivers and the chute
As a Brazilian i wish u could at least mention the DDM-45s, it is a Sd45 but with the DDs trucks and the M is metric or maybe modified to run in 1 meter gauge and we still have a lot of second hand SDs and some T too running here same to the C30-7 like in total 700 to 800 units was imported in the late 2000s
