That Maxon surprised me, but fave out of these was the EQD. The Fuzz War is kinda its own thing. It can pummel an amp into submission. Is this channel still going? It's great!
@@mattgilbert7347 The Hoof is a great pedal, maybe not the most unique sounding but it's very versatile, it sounds awesome with octave pedals before it.
I tried all kinds of fuzzes trying to find the one. The Fuzz War is the one for me. Insane tone sweep, as much fuzz and volume as you would ever need. Of course depends on your needs. The Hoof was a little too tame for me. And watch Oliver from DBA’s video on the fuzz war. That alone will sell you.
Fuzz War sounds awesome! Of these pedals I've only got to try the Hoof, and that one is really cool. But I have the Walrus Eons and that seems to cover most everything the Hoof can do and more.
The Fuzz War got hyped up a bit in my mind, so I was surprised to find I thought it sounded the worst of all these. My favorite is the green muff, then the Hoof just barely over the Earth, then the Fuzz War.
I’ve played plenty of muffs, but I just got the fuzz war and even though it has a similar circuit, it seems different enough to be considered its own thing. I love it, personally. I’m holding onto my NYC and Green Russian.
the thing about the fuzz war is that the volume knob has a tremendous impact on the tone. It pretty much needs to be cranked up past noon for the full sound of the pedal to shine. The mistake most reviewers make on the fuzz war is that they don't turn up the volume. When the volume is down, the sound is quite thinned out IMO. Doesn't accurately represent what the fuzz war does best - ear crushingly loud fuzz. You also need an amp with a lot of headroom, preferably 100w+, and sounds best thru a clean channel.
Probably going to buy a Hoof. I'd like to try the Fuzz War though! I think resale on the Fuzz War might be a little tougher here even though it's a well received pedal.
They are both beloved pedals but I agree, maybe the Hoof would be easier to resell. To be honest, if you have one of both you're not gonna sell it, they're great pedals.
It is a great, overlooked, pedal. To be honest, the whole fuzz elements range from Maxon is very cool, but not very popular I would say. These pedals deserve more attention.
I feel like the Tone War and Hoof could have been tweaked more to sound alike. Eg, Hoof is a pretty versitile pedal and can be tweaked to remove the mid-heavy tones to more emulate the Fuzz War tones. That said 1. Hoof 2. Fuzz War 3. Green Fuzz 4. Meh
Agree, we could have tweaked a bit more the Hoof, which is a great pedal by the way. We did some other testing and you can scoop the mids on the Hoof but not anywhere near as the Fuzz War. We'll do another test at some point. This said, right now we have a pedalboard with both Hoof and Fuzz War, it's a great combo.
The Green Muff has a great tone, I agree, not sure the noise is just an issue of my pedal. Love the Hoof but I always look for something smoother for a "muff" tone, if I want something raging I go with a different type of fuzz. Why you sold your Fuzz War?
@@WeAsACompany I had my Fuzz War for about a year. I did really like it but the volume was crazy and I found I only used it dialled to about 11 o'clock on the Fuzz and similar for the tone, or a bit lower. Never liked it whacked up much higher. Also found it to have a layer of fizz to it that I didn't like. I'm a huge Thee Oh Sees fan so bought it to get that kind of sound but got nowhere near it, haha. I now use either the dirty channel in my Orange amp, or a couple of pedals by Raygun FX here in the UK, their Super Fuzz Bender Mkiii is pretty basic but I love it and the tone and fuzz knobs have good scope for me. Also have their Soda Drive+ which is a very cool OD. Some days I miss the chunk of the Fuzz War though, no denying the setting I used was cool. Pricey pedal for me though so selling it to buy two or three other ones was a no brainer. Cheers.
@@ghostbird4360 I understand what you say. I love the Fuzz War but it can be not a super easy pedal to set if you're looking for smooth fuzz tones as I was. Agree on the fact that the top end can sound very fizzy, I prefer to use it with dark sounding amps. In the setting I use is very cool but also very mid scooped, not perfect if you want to cut the mix but very useful for stuff like shoegaze.
@@WeAsACompany good reply, I know what you mean. Glad it's not just me that hears that fizziness with it. Different vibe completely but I'm very intrigued by Death By Audios Reverberation Machine pedal, again very expensive though. Back to muff like pedals, another UK company called Fredric Effects have one called the ICBM 78 which is supposed to be very warm and smooth. Will try one out someday.
Muff-style pedals are so cool. Which is your favorite in this mix?
Fuzz war, but it sounds better with the tone at 11 or 1, those 2 settings seem to be sweet spots.
Great fuzz, I dig the Green Muff a lot in this group.

Cool. If I ever have one, I'll have to try it with an octave or two in front

Had a Fuzz War for about a year, No regrets at all, I’m very satisfied with the amount of gain and volume havoc they could fit into it!

Fuzz War is a great pedal. Most people think is a just-one-sound box, but this is not the case, it's a very versatile fuzz.
Fuzz War sounds awesome! Of these pedals I've only got to try the Hoof, and that one is really cool. But I have the Walrus Eons and that seems to cover most everything the Hoof can do and more.
Hoof because of the mids, I am not a scooped mids guy so I’m glad I own the hoof

I like the maxon fuzz elements earth! Good for stoner riffs 🔥🔥.
Mojo Hand FX Iron Bell, Buffalo FX Ram's Head, and Wren & Cuff Box of War big box for me.
The EQD sounded great here :)
That melody hook he keeps doing sounds very close to I shot the sheriff.
Great job on this one too! Would love to see how the various Deluxe Big Muffs compare to the EHX Muff reissues.
Thx a lot! We'll do a selection of the first three videos for another shootout. It's going to take a few weeks.

Fuzz war is awesome, especially when the tone is at 11 or 1. The only thing the hoof has going for it is how small it is. Cheers.
Resale on fuzz war is the same price on reverb as they are new, so idk...
@@kosmicwizard Right, The Hoof is very pedalboard friendly.
Also, I think the Green Muff sounds better than the regular Big Muff
Green Muff is one of the best Muff we've ever tried. It's a bit low in the output but, beside that, great pedal.
I think I liked the Maxon Earth the best.

Same here, the Green Muff has a great sound. We haven't tried other GM though.

The Fuzz War just dominates its Big Muff Fuzz competition.
This is the Fuzz War V2, right? The circuits between V1 and V2 are very very different and I am having trouble finding a definite V2 example.

2 green muff
3 the hoof

Fuzz War is way less scooped than a standard muff.
