  • Sarah Kane's Cleansed was produced at the National Theatre in 2016, directed by Katie Mitchell. Here's a look at why Cleansed is a challenge for actors and directors, how the cast tackled the script in the rehearsal room, and what Kane might have intended by including seemingly impossible stage directions.

Once at a show (I think the Cherry Orchard) the lights went out on a bare stage and came back on within seconds to a stage filled with a field of wheat. One of those "the effect getting applause moments".

Do you have a video clip for behind the scenes? Im just curious on how they did their devices, like how they grow a flowers onstage and do prosthetics.

A wonderful little film. I wonder if the filmed production of Cleansed will ever be available for the public to view? And whether every production could be filmed and eventually released on DVD for those who can't reach the NT?

That still means an expensive trip (train and hotel) to London for those of us too far away for this to be a commute. Please consider the possibility of digital streaming/DVD's of your past production library. As the National Theatre you could really be leading the way here and the Globe is kicking your butt with regards to access for those of us for whom theatre is a passion but also a HUGE luxury. AND YES I know about the £10 tickets, but you have to be there early and that involves an over night stay because I can't get to London early without one, and for an evening performance that alo makes it each trip a two night stay. Just a point to note; the money I can spend on Theatre is limited but I came to see Othello at the National because I adore Rory Kineer and its my favourite Shakespeare play. I worked it out and for the total cost of the trip I could have seen 6 shows at my local receiving house. The live broadcasts are a godsend and thank you for them. I attend all I can but there are shows I have had to miss because of budget or timing,

Kane specifically requested that performances not be distributed on video as the work was made to be viewed in the theatre. The British Library has copies of Blasted and Cleansed available to view on request/by appointment if memory serves, other than that it's not going to happen I'm afraid :(

Having overly ambitious film-like stage directions isn’t “genius”, it’s obnoxious...

piecesofme you have to remember that Sarah Kane was very mentally ill.

The piece was written for theatre not for film so it's not film-like at all that's not the intention. Plays are written for stage. That's why they call it an adaptation if a play or book is made into a film since the original intention was for its initial performance medium.
