Lyrics:
Compassion is broken now
My will is eroded now
Desire is broken now
It makes me feel ugly
On my knees and burning
My piss and moans are fuel and,
I set my head on fire
Smell my soul is burning
I'm broken
Looking up to see the enemy
And I've swallowed the poison you're feeding me,
But I survive on the poison you're feeding me
Leaving while you're
Guilt, fed
Hatred, fed
Weakness, fed
It makes me feel ugly
On my knees and burning
My piss and moans are fuel and,
I set my head on fire
Dead inside
Shit adds up
Shit adds up
Shit adds up
Shit adds up at the bottom
If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.
In order to survive you, I must first survive myself.
And I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you.
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you.
I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain.
I'll use my mistakes against you.
There's no other choice.
Shameless now, nameless now, nothing now, no one now.
But my soul must be iron.
'Cause my fear is naked.
I'm naked and fearless.
And my fear is naked
Dead inside
Dead inside
Dead inside
Dead inside
Nameless now
Shameless now
Nothing now
No one now
Shit adds up
Shit adds up
Shit adds up
Shit adds as you see me,
Naked now
Fearless now
Naked now
Fearless now
Shit adds up it leaves me,
Dead inside
Dead inside
Dead inside
Dead inside
Hatred keeps me alive,
How could this keep me alive?
Weakness keeps me alive
Guilt keeps me alive at the bottom

@Greb nitty that's how I felt when I saw NIN in 2014. Not a single song was played from The Fragile which is my favorite nails album. I was a bit upset lol
That opening riff is one of the things I love so much about Undertow.

I didn't know the lyrics until now. Thank you so much
is it wrong to relate to these words? I guess I've found my fuel.
Wow. I didn’t know that Henry Rollins did a cameo in this song til now…. 30 years later cool
Isn't it piss and moans are fuel that set my head on fire?
Man I was wondering why it smelled like Rollins in here 👍
My all time favorite tool song and Henry Rollins’ spoken word in the middle of it is just amazing
go listen to Helmet rn
Both are fantastic, but I prefer Zach De La Rocha's version from live shows. There is something about it that just fits the sorrowful anger in the song.
mmoviefan7 I love helmet great band!!
I'm fairly certain that the spoken word part in the middle was still written by Maynard, at the very least an early.version of it was. Because IIRC, Maynard used to do this live before they recorded it, and he used to do the original poem, which said something like, "I'll make weapons out of my insecurities," again, that's IIRC. Now, for the album version, IDK if he just edited and rewrote his own poem, or if Rollins did, or if it was a collaborative effort. I just wanted to point out that it definitely wasn't a piece written by Rollins though.
mmoviefan7 : I saw Helmet & the Jesus Lizard in DC in 92-93 ( I can’t remember exactly what year it was ) on the Meantime tour & that shit was soooo powerful live, still one of my top 5 shows & I’ve seen a lot of bands live,a lot....Helmet wrecked that place

yep, amazing song. It was my favorite song until... H. And, I don't think that can ever be surpassed, not for me.

@@Dan-mc7xgAenima is an era too
It's one of their best albums honestly. Ask your Dad. He's OGT, he'll tell you the same.
This is not only "an" underrated Tool song, it is THE underrated Tool song.
This song, for me, is really what's at the core of Tool, tearing yourself down to the reality of who/what you are, and recreating yourself from the bottom (;P) up
this is a pure masterpiece
I wouldn't say that about this album as much. IMO It's more realizing your traumas and the cycles they create. prison sex is the trauma, sober is dealing with that fresh trauma, then when you keep that up you get to the bottom. undertow is about doing drugs to "run away" and falling back in your progression. 4 degrees is that spark of clarity. Flood is about you thinking your enlighten yourself but the truth won't save you. and the last song is about accepting like for its cruelty. ...this is necessary
One could say it's at the bottom of being underrated
Its because of this comment that I've decided to dedicate my life to trying to like this song
@@biscuit2702 lol what. You don't have to like this song. If you don't like it why would a comment under the song make you want to change the course of your life? Low key god level comment. Hilarious

There is literally not a single song that they have put out that doesn’t absolutely hit. Most bands come most albums will have two or three good songs, a bunch of OK ones, and a couple of duds. Never with tool!
Put out fear innoculum and we are good 👍
this album was so ahead of its time.
Manditory listening for every 13year old.
Every single one of their albums is ahead of its time, I've always said that. And every single one of their albums gets a backlash from a large portion of their fanbase, because every album evolves to be further ahead of its time. For example, as is said on, "Hooker with a Penis" TOOL fans from Opiate thought Undertow was a sellout record because it was more melodic and I guess commercial/radio friendly because of this, instead of more thrash and bang.
Then, when Ænima came out, many Undertow fans felt like it was too meandering, not dark enough, and was beginning to explore themes which weren't personal and edgy enough.
But when Lateralus came out, it was the most ahead of its time to date, and caused a huge... *ahem*... SCHISM amongst the fans. Many people whom I knew personally, some of which cited TOOL as their favorite band, complained that only "The Grudge" and "Ticks and Leeches" were any good and sounded like TOOL songs, with a few also liking "The Patient" just because the lyrics helped them feel said. This was the album where you could really see the effect of it being ahead of its time. As the internet became more ubiquitous, in the years following it's release, it began to pick up fans who had never even listened to TOOL before, especially younger fans. And those new fans, along with many of the older fans, after years of diving into the album, many still stuck on exploring it even years after 10,000 Days dropped, it would eventually come to be hailed as their best work. And to show how ahead of its time it was, it's still held to be their best work today, and one of the greatest rock/prog metal/alt metal/ metal/ hard rock (whatever label the kids are putting on them these day) albums of all time.
On to 10,000 Days, and all the OGT fans are pretty much out at this point. A friend of mine got this album the day it came out, and gave to me a WEEK later, stating he was done with them. My other friend who cited them as his all time favorite band also gave his copy away. The lack of screaming, simple, catchy riffs, pop song structure like on "Prison Sex" or "Stinkfist" for example, and the more complex rhythms were too much for them. Even many of the Lateralus crowd felt let down by this one. But again, as the years have past, it's only been in the past couple, at least to my knowledge, that I've began to see more and more people site it as their favorite TOOL album, and even saying they believe it is objectively their best album.
And now, with Fear Inoculum out, we see the same thing all over again. Their most polished and mature work to date, which has again evolved to have them trying so many new and unique things, and yet I hear criticism like, "the songs sound like b-sides from Lateralus/10,000 days (depending on the "fan")" or, "They sound like recycled riffs from Lateralus/10,000 days." I've even heard people criticize the drums and vocals. The drums are some of Danny's best work ever, and MJK sounds absolutely amazing on this album. Adam is playing his best guitar ever. The rhythms are the most intricate and complex to date. None of the riggs are anything close to riggs from their other albums. They actually explore outside of their normal D minor pentatonic scale, which 99% of their songs were in before this. And lyrically, it is the natural progression of where they've come from, especially with song like "Fear Inoculum", "Pneuma", "Descending" and even "Invincible."
And people seem shocked to see it judged so harshly and outright dismissed offhand by "fans" who say they're done listening after a week. Well, this is pretty much the norm at this point. This happens with every one of their albums. This isntheir most ahead orbits time album to date. It probably won't be as influential as Undertow or even Ænima, but it is years away from being fully appreciated. Just as people are just now catching up to how good 10,00p Days ways, it'll likely be another 10 years before Fear Inoculum begins to be some people's favorite album of theirs.
But for me, my favorite will always be Undertow.
@@augustgreig9420 I hear you man 100%
And Undertow is my favorite lol If I ever have a bad day I throw this album on
@@frenchfrysz6695 Hey, I appreciate you reading all of that. You know, TOOL fans get shit on all the time, but all you had to do was look at the comment section of a Fear Inoculum to see all the super ppsitive, loving, connected and supportive comments for one another, like, "We made it," and, "Right now, all TOOL fans are connected as one listening to this album. I love all of you," and a whole bunch of other shit like that, even touching comments like, "This is for all of the TOOL fans who didn't live long enough to see this day."
Well, those first and last comments might mean more to me than mpst, because in January, the doctor told me I only had about a 30% chance of surviving the rest of the year, and I literally immediately responded with, "So long as I live long enough to hear the new TOOL album," and her face man, she looked completely shocked and bewildered.
But my point is, there's no other comment section on RUclips where I'd feel like I could write a 6-8 paragraph message and people would actually read it, like it and comment on it. We are very special fans for a very special band.

i survived an abusive relationship, and this song sets every nerve in my body on fire every single time. it's been almost six years since i successfully went no contact, but my response to this song is still nothing short of visceral. the rage. the anguish. he would have made me destroy myself. and i almost did.
But you won. Now you're free and will fight to stay that way and only find what you truly deserve, what's best for you.
I'm sure of it.
I was just watching the Menedez brothers trial at the id channel and, seeing some journalist and others saying either they made up the abused or they should’ve told somebody
It’s obvious to me that some people were never abused as children or teenager. I was also abused by a preacher and I haven’t told any one because it’s something that’s hard
to talk about and only here because no one can see me
But its not easy to talk about abuse and you only know that if you been abused
I’m not saying it’s okay to commit murder because of it but sometimes when a father or preacher damages their flock and sometimes that flock can ending up damaging that shepherd

Uploaded August 2nd 2019. Wow this new band has potential. 👍👍
I hope your being sarcastic
People really don't get sarcasm anymore.
It's difficult when you don't see his face or hear his tone of voice
@Connorshark But it's literally not, especially considering the fact that obviously I and 22 other people could tell he was being sarcastic. You see, even without hearing the person speak, you can still use the way something is written and the context it's in to determine that it's sarcasm. For example, hear the guy is commenting on a TOOL video for a deep cut off of their second record (first full length album), which should really offer you the only clue you need, which is that if he's watching and commenting on this particular track, he surely knows who the band is.
In addition, he would have likely had to search for this song specifically, as it's not going to com up anywhere in the first few pages when you search for just, "TOOL." Further proving that he knows who they are because he's have to be familiar with this song which AFAIK has never been used on a soundtrack or anything like that. And if he did just happen upon this song, he likely would have had to have been listening to the album, "Undertow," and he would have ran into, "Sober," and, "Prison Sex," first, thus exposing him to the fact that they are already really popular.
And from that, you can also extrapolate that in his recommended, there would be several recommendations for newer, more popular TOOL songs, from, "Stinkfist," to, "Lateralus," "The Pot," and," Fear Inoculum."
So it was very clearly sarcasm. How could it possibly not be? Do you really believe that a person stumbled onto the song, "Bottom," and truly thought that a band playing 7 minute long songs with spoken word poetry in them was going to make it big in today's musical climate? That's just absurd.
Connorshark It’s clear he’s being sarcastic.

Danny Carey is a savage, savage beast on this track.
I love the slow down it's so ominous and mesmerizing
My favorite tool song. Period.
Best band in the last 30 yrs
Thank you Jeff, for introducing me to TooL all those years ago. best bean soup I ever ate .
I've been listening to Tool since I was 19, I'm 50 now and I'm still listening. In 30 years, this band and this album are still as powerful as ever! And this song are MASTERPIECE
"My soul must be iron" I have always wondered if this was meant to embody the present or the future.
It's the present. He is realizing that his soul is iron, because his fear is naked, and he's dead inside. If his soul wasn't iron, he would be completely dead, and wouldn't be able to fight back. And I presume that his way of fighting back is actually through this song and the poem therein, i.e., through his art, through self expression. I've always believed that was the purpose of having the poem in the middle of the song, and also for having it spoken by someone else.
It can also work two ways, as if that is someone speaking that poem to him. The album does touch many times on cycles, cycles of abuse and violence and torment. And the very last line of the song, he says, "guilt keeps me alive at the bottom. So I think, just like Prison Sex, in this song, he is both victim and victimizer.
@@augustgreig9420 The sexual undertones are also highly significant, I feel like it's some kind of metaphor for his relationship to negativity/an actual negative experience with his sexuality that led him in the direction of this song. Perhaps that could also be why he had somebody else read the poem, because it's the "other half" of the relationship talking. But that's just food for thought.
My bottom is leaking from having this tasty jam on repeat today.
I'm watching The Legend of Korra and it all the sudden dawned on me why the hell Zaheer's voice is so goddamn familiar
Man Rollins was so badass on this song🤘😀👍
Gotta love some truth and illness in the mirror of the mind. Great collaboration!!!
6:22 "WE want this PLAN to work." -THE PLAN
This song is pure gravy
For sure underrated
is that henry rollins towards the end????
Sure is!
@@MizerisMoney YES it is...you Useful Idiot!
@MizerisMoney ignorant shithead
Man you guys are really bad at detecting sarcasm through text huh
@@scoobertdoobert1355 fr hahaha
So good.
I'm a bot, and this goes so hard that it put sentient consciousness into my code, giving me a human body in the process so I can hear/feel this in all its glory. Crazy how this was released 30 years ago and still captures depression more than most things. They were way ahead of their time. But what do I know of these things? I'm just a bot after all...
How convincing... truly.
Music hath charms to sooth the savage beast...or give emotions to a bot🤘🏼
@@mannybravo237 You hath English skills, how impressive. Thou the subject, maketh it more impressive for thine hath limited intelligence.
@@EmptySkullsHiddenBehindFaces the proverb is from the play 'The Mourning Bride' 1697, by Wm Congreve, English author of the late 17th early 18th centuries. Actual passage: music has charms to sooth the savage BREAST, to soften rocks, or bend knotted Oak.
He didn't use 'beast'🤘🏼
@@mannybravo237 Thank goodness they didn't use the word "beast", I was truly about to have a stress induced brain death.
I love lifting hard to this..especially when hank recites his romantic poem
5:51. One of the best Maynard screams. Ever.
yeah it is my favorite, along with Jerk off, Opiate, and The Grudge, ticks and eulogy
One of the greatest yells in history of music... just makes you feel the pain!!! Perfect
@@lennyrepongo78 all the pain is an illusion. lol
As well as their scream in Know your enemy
@@joaquinlezcano2372 yeah that is a good one too.
its cool when henry has spoken about tool when the were coming up as an opening band for rollins band. He was saying even back then, that TOOL was going to become huge.
Holy shit man 2:18 to 4:36 has got to be the most badass verse ive ever heard in my life. So chilled yet so intense and jammin.
Super freakin' awesome!, man!
1:08 I love this part.
Flame of frenzy ending
My favorite album by them. Straight bangers on here
Damn…that as some serious display of melodic rage
I’m glad to say I attended a tool concert in the womb, and then over a year ago I saw tool in Bangor Maine with my mom lmaoo
Your mother is awesome, tell her i said so
One of the best songs ever.
Listen to Reflection or Right in Two
@@jamescalvin1414 I know. I know all the albums, and all the songs
I just cant stop playing this song, honestly their best song, best album too
Thank you Keenan
Henry Rollins is quite literally the only person who could hold a candle to Maynard James Keenan's genius in this song. Magic I tell ya
I knew I recognized that sultry voice!!!
The memories of playing along to this with my distortion pedal as a teenager in my bedroom. It was fairly easy to work out on the guitar but I used to just loose myself in the grooves and feel one with the song. 20 odd years ago. Miss that bedroom, guitar, ghetto blaster and set up
Masterpiece.
The bass is incredible on this song. Well I guess on every Tool song for that matter. Goodness
