This album was released in October of '96. I was working in a plastics fabrication shop. Everybody got this cd as a Christmas gift from me.

Many of my co-workers did what I did and my friend Miguel did, which was to buy it the day it came out. I think we all perpetuated the idea that it was an album to buy on release. None of us were disappointed and we discussed the album for a month every time we noticed something else that we thought was amazing. What I remember is that none of us were put off by the experimental tracks the way the critics were.

I got it for Christmas that year. I never even knew it had come out. Tried acid for the first time on New Years Eve right after that and listened to it. I remember a balloon followed me up the stairs to my room and stopped at my feet. The acid was called Felix. Never see good acid anymore.

Tool performed at my college back in 1996. I remember being extremely excited, none of my friends were fans so I went alone... I met an exchange student that was there as well, she never heard of Tool but she was looking forward to good music. We watched the concert together. At the end, I remember being disappointed that they didn't perform Pushit, it was my favorite song. Anyway, the crowd was thinning out and everyone was leaving. I was going with the exchange student for some drinks when we hear the guitar. I turned around so fast and ran to the stage, holding the exchange students hand. Tool played Pushit and OmG it sounded like heaven. The exchange student was brought to tears... To end my story, me and the exchange student became very fast friends. After the semester we wrote letters and video chatted every day. We were best of friends. told each other everything. Her sister messaged me and told me she had fallen ill. my best friend passed away a few weeks later. that was 5 years ago. Tonight was the first time I could listen to Pushit and not cry. I smiled the whole time. Thanks so much Tool for the beautiful music and for introducing me to the best person I have ever known. ♡♡♡

      What's coming through is alive
What's holding up is a mirror
But what's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn this piss to wine
They're both totally void of hate

      And considerately killing me
      And considerately killing me
      And considerately killing me
      Without the skin
      Beneath the storm
      Under these tears
      The walls came down
And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes
      My fear begins to fade
      Recalling all of those times
      I could have cried then
      I should have cried then
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
      My fear begins to fade

For example The Grudge to me, I had a very spiritual experience and revelation and once I learned how to “tool properly” and figured it out (to me at least) it unlocked a flow in my consciousness. It was almost like a dmt trip without the visuals. It’s powerful stuff man.

    Here are the lyrics. Enjoy!
    -----------------------------------------------
    Saw that gap again today,
While you were begging me to stay.
Take care not to make me enter,
If I do we both may disappear.
Know that I will choke until I swallow,
Choke this infant here before me.
What is this but my reflection?
Who am I to judge or strike you down?
    But you're
    Pushin' and shoving me.
    Pushin' and shoving me
    Pushin' and shoving me
    Pushin' and shoving me
    Pushin' and shoving me.
    Pushin' and shoving me
    Pushin' and shoving me
    Pushin' and shoving me
You still love me, still love me,
Push it on me, push it on me.
You still love me, still love me.
Push it on me, push it on me.
Rest your trigger on my finger,
Bang my head upon the fault line.
You better take care not to make me enter.
'Cause if I do we both may disappear.
    But you're
    Pushin' and shoving me.
    Pushin' and shoving me.
    Pushin' and shoving me.
    Pushin' and shoving me.
You still love me, still love me,
Push it on me, push it on me.
    You're pushin' it, shoving me.
    You're pushin' it, shoving me.
I'm slipping back into the gap again.
I'm alive when you're touching me,
But not when you're shoving me down.
    But I'd trade it all
For just a little piece of mind.
    Push it on me.
    Push it on me.
    Push it on me.
    Push it on me.
Your Pushin' and shovin' and scramblin'
To keep my feet flat on the ground
    I am somewhere I don't wanna be.
Push me somewhere I don't wanna be.
Put me somewhere I don't wanna be.
Seeing someplace I don't wanna see.
Never wanna see that place again.
    Saw that gap again today
While you were begging me to stay.
    Managed to push myself away,
And you, as well, my dear.
If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay,
    You minimize my movement anyway,
One must persuade you another way.
Pushin', shovin', pushin', shovin, pushin me
    There's no love in fear.
    Staring down the hole again.
Hands are on my back again.
    Survival is my only friend.
    Terrified of what may come.
Remember I will always love you,
As I claw your fucking throat away.
There will be no other way,
It will end no other way.

It's what you notice most about the old Tool albums. Maynard was so unique and his delivery was literally one of one.
Many think he got tired of Tool. I think he got tried of himself. Something definitely happened and I'm guessing it was a bad trip. Many of mid 2000s songs talk about him losing his identity of self. I think By and Down is a great example.
He became a little too self aware. He was at his best when balancing his nihilist view with his preachy holier than thou demeanor.

BINGO!!! I will never get back the countless hours I've spent going through every comment on all of Tool's vids. But, ya know what?? The stories I have found there were well worth every second. Some tragic, some uplifting and some that were just off the fuckin chain but all of those stories, those different voices, those distant friends, they all had a familiarity to them and a feeling of unity. I still spend more time than I should going thru comments but they call me and I can't resist. Each and every one is like opening a letter from an old friend that you haven't seen in years and they give me hope that the future may not be as bleak nor as dark as it appears. So, family, keep those letters coming and when I hear that beckoning voice, I will sit here in my little room with a glass of wine and a top shelf pre rolled from the dispensary down the street and I will get lost in your stories and feel at peace with the world.

    The lyrics for "Pushit"
I saw the gap again today
While you were begging me to stay
Take care not to make me enter
If I do we both may disappear
You know that I will choke until I swallow
Choke this infant here before me
What is this but my reflection?
Who am I to judge or strike you down?
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
    You still love me
You still love me but you didn't need to shit on me
    You still love me
You still love me but you didn't need to shit on me
Rest your trigger on my finger
Bang my head upon the fault line
You'd better take care not to make me enter
'Cause if I do we both may disappear
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
But you're pushing me shoving me
You still love me, you still love me
She didn't mean to pushit on me.
    You're pushing me shoving me
    You're pushing me shoving me
I'm slipping back into the gap again
I'm alive when you're touching me
Alive when you're shoving me down, hey
But I'd trade it all for just a little peace of mind
    Pushit on me
    Pushit on me
    Pushit on me
    Pushit on me
You're pushing and shoving and scrambling
Keep my feet flat on the ground
    I am somewhere I don't wanna be
Push me somewhere I don't wanna be
Put me somewhere I don't wanna be
Seeing someplace I don't wanna see
Never wanna see that place again
    Saw that gap again today
While you were begging me to stay
    Managed to push myself away
And you, as well, my dear
If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay
    You minimize my movement anyway
I must persuade you another way
    Pushing and shovin'
Pushing and shoving, push at me!
    There's no love in fear
    Staring down the hole again
Hands are on my back again
    Surviving is my only friend
    Terrified of what may come
Remember I will always love you
As I claw your fucking throat away
It will end no other way
It will end no other way

Revisiting the music of TOOL has been an incredibly profound experience, akin to embarking on an endless journey that continuously unfolds new layers of depth and emotion. Each session spent with their intricate compositions feels like a new adventure, one that never truly begins nor ends but perpetually evolves, offering fresh insights and immense joy every time. Their music is not just a listening experience; it is an immersion into a complex and beautifully crafted world of sound and thought.
Should humanity endure the test of time, I am convinced that TOOL’s music will continue to captivate and inspire even 1000 years from now. Their work transcends the temporal, resonating with a timeless quality that speaks to the core of human experience. The band’s ability to weave together technical prowess, profound lyrical content, and hauntingly powerful melodies ensures that their legacy will endure, providing a source of inspiration and wonder for generations to come.

I saw is in concert on 3/4/22. My first Tool concert. Their music saved my life when I was at my darkest. This is one of my most favorite songs ever. When they played it I thought I’d die right there. I’m crying again just hearing and thinking about the show. Seeing them was on my bucket list. My abusers said I’d never get clean and I’d see Tool Live but I did and I am!! Tool gave me the strength to finally put a stop to their terror and to change my life. So when I say they saved me I mean that. This song was a huge part of my strength. When he sings “I am somewhere I don’t want be” I felt like they were with me, I wasn’t so alone. That whole verse he wrote for me. I know that’s not true but in a way it is. Then he reminds me “There’s no love in fear”, and he’s right. I saw God at the concert and his name is Maynard James Keenan.

The amount of emotion in this song is beyond words. The middle section starting at 4:17 feels so dark, hopeless, yet peaceful. Then Adam comes in at 4:53 and brings a fearful tone. At 5:05 the bass brings a sense of hope amidst the realization that the current situation is not working.

A lot of people ask me what my favorite song is and every time I just can't give them an answer. It's like asking me what my favorite breath of air is, every breath is life saving. Every song. I find that I favor different songs in different portions of my life, currently with all the stuff culminating I keep finding myself coming back to Pushit. There's something about the nearly 10 minute roller coaster that just speaks to me. I could go on a whole rant and include several different albums like Tomorrow Is Nearly Yesterday and Everyday Is Stupid by Crywank but I want to just take this moment to appreciate this piece of work. It's a centerpiece in my life currently. Thanks for listening.
