Hades definitely needs more attention. And if someone isn't gonna check them out, it's their loss! Great video man. Good to hear from you again. Also, I'm bad at making lists unless it's like 50 albums but my list would be similar to yours, but would probably have had something from Rotting Christ and Mystifier.

    • @HeavyMetallurgy
      @HeavyMetallurgy  7 лет назад

Dark Hyms From The Cold North I used to love compiling lists. These days it seems everything is harder than it should be, but for a quick list, this one is pretty faithful to what I was obsessing over in the 90s. Satyricon Nemesis Divina and The Shadowthrone should have been on here’s well. I was sadly late to Rotting Christ with Triarchy of the Lost lovers being the first album of theirs I heard. Great stuff!

Great to see a video from you! Definitly need to take time for Mercyful Fate as well as spend more time with the Windir discography, I've listened to each album 1-2 times maybe. Always nice to see some love for Taake, saw them live this summer and was blown away. I think Armagedda's Only True Believers are worthy of a spot on a list like this, no one ever talks about them here on youtube it seems.

It sounds like our musical tastes were rather similar, at least through the 1980s and 1990s! Great list, I can't really fault any of the choices there. The Emperor/Enslaved split would have been my first second-wave Norwegian black metal cassette, followed by "In the Night Side Eclipse" - that stuff was mind-blowing at the time! (I agree about Enslaved's side of that split - not quite as good as Emperor's, but I liked it almost as well.) It took me a while to finally track down that demo, but I remember mail-ordering that same cassette as soon as I found it, and being impressed with just how ambitious and truly frightening it was.
Before that, Celtic Frost's "To Mega Therion" would have been my early black metal exposure, sort of equivalent to the Mercyful Fate disc for you, but Mercyful Fate hit like a cold, evil bomb when I finally did hear it.
I think in the end my selection of black metal classics would overlap with about half your selection (especially Samael, Emperor, Mercyful Fate, and Mayhem), though I think my selection would probably have included more of the likes of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Possessed, Morbid Angel and Deicide (those guys were definitely more black than death metal on their first couple albums), Arcturus, Bathory, Sarcofago (that "Rotting" EP was scary for its time, and it's easy to see how South American bands like Sarcofago played a massive role in shaping the Norwegian metal scene!)....
    Anyway, great list here!

Yep, the fjords of Norway really offered us a lot of black metal classics...
In the Nightside Eclipse is great, but 20+ years later, I have yet to find the black metal album that matches the soaring majesty, varied hues, and orchestrated intensity of Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, in my estimation, a pinnacle in music history.
I also adore Mayhem's Wolf's Lair Abyss & Grand Declaration of War & Chimera, Immortal's At the Heart of Winter & Sons of Northern Darkness, and Emperor's IX Equilibrium.
Some other black metal favorites are: Enslaved's Isa & Below the Lights, Summoning's Minas Morgul & Stronghold & Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, Drudkh's Forgotten Legends & Estrangement & Blood in Our Wells, Thorns self-titled, Bathory's Under the Sign of the Black Mark, Moonblood's Sob a Lua, Nargaroth's Black Metal Ist Krieg, Nachtfalke's Doomed to Die, Ruins of Beverest's Blood Vaults, Rotting Christ's A Dead Poem & Triarchy of Lost Lovers, Carpathian Forest's Black Shining Leather, Horn of Valere's Blood of the Ancient Heathens, Elite's Kampen, and Ulver's Nattens Madrigal.
Some of these bands the host of this channel turned me on to back in the day---Summoning, Moonblood, Drudkh, and Rotting Christ.

So glad that I had a hand in getting you into some of those classics. Not black metal, but I still fondly recall a road trip to Milwaukee Metal Fest and playing Mob Rules for your first experience with that classic. Being able to tie a dearly loved album to a friend, makes it even more special. Anyway... other black metal classics... Hades - Again Shall Be and The Dawn of a Dying Sun are both amazing. Windir Arntor is one you should investigate if you haven’t already. Norway was always my favorite scene back in the heyday. Sorry for the delay in my reply! Talk soon.

@@HeavyMetallurgy Yeah, I remember that life-changing listening experience very well as the gray sky outside turned black beneath the Sign of the Southern Cross, my favorite Black Sabbath song ever from what has been favorite Sabbath album since that time...
Though I relish tons of albums of all types, especially metal, prog rock, and soul, the only metal albums that I'd put on the same uppermost pedestal as Mob Rules are Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (Emperor), Rust in Peace (Megadeth), Phoenix Rising (Destroyer 666), and A Flame to the Ground Beneath (Lost Horizon).
Painkiller, Defenders of the Faith, Heaven and Hell, Sons of Northern Darkness, At the Heart of Winter, Wolf's Lair Abyss, Grand Declaration of War, Awakening the World, Battle Hymns, Kings of Metal, Mystification, Mark of the Beast, Imaginations from the Other Side, Spectres, Secret Treaties, Thunder and Lightning, III: So Long Suckers, and others are incredible, long time favorites, but the aforementioned quintet are the glorious, godly FIVE.

You just blew my mind with the Attila/Nivek Ogre comparison. I'm with you, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is one of the best.... I especially like the mention of Windir's "Arntor". I really like all of the other Windir albums a lot as well, but "Arntor" is just a step above the rest. Great pick.... I will own up to owning some Graveland albums. I particularly think his viking metal style black metal stuff is pretty strong. I don't listen to them very often though..... I feel like I've read that Mercyful Fate was actually referred to as black metal before the black metal as we know today was really a thing. I could be making that up though..... Good list, thanks!

Just rewatched this episode, great classic BM picks especially the Mercyful Fate Melissa LP, first wave of BM.
Just read a news story on April 23, 2023 about BM status in Norway and thought this would be he perfect place to add the story.
Reported by AFP. Black Metal has earned a spot in the Halls of Culture with a new exhibit, called Bad Vibes, at the Oslo National Library.
The curator said Norwegian Black Metal is an important part of Norways national cultural heritage.
Looks like BM is now a mainstream part of Norwegian history. Who would have thought a few violent altercations, several church burnings and the occasional murder would be considered national cultural heritage.
Anyways, good for Norway to recognize the value of Black Metal music. What other country in the world would honour a musical genre as brutal as BM?

After watching this, I can tell we have very similar taste. I recommend Enthroned's early work, like Prophesies of Pagan Fire, Towards the Skullthrone of Satan, and Regie Sathanas. They are from Belgium I believe. It's one of the first Black Metal bands I ever got into, and there's some definite nostalgia for me.
