- WHADDADIFFERENCE! I am such grateful
I was gonna upload this in 4K, but my video editor is so old that it can't export 4K... Sooo 1080p it is then.
I should make it clear that I used a 6 fps cap for the 2008 PC video clips. The comparison was made using my current PC. I did my best to replicate the same experience I had in 2008. I vividly remember HL2 doing 5-6 fps in this area. Not all areas were this bad. Many indoor areas did allow for 20+ fps. The horrible fps was most likely due to whatever CPU I had at the time. I can't remember what kind it was. All I know is that Intel made it and it was single core.
That's not Half-Life that's 1/5th Life
😂
Bro that was FOUL PLAY 💀
Bro had more FPS in 2008 then me on my family laptop 💀
Haha wow... That's awful.
Before I got the FX 5500, I was using integrated graphics that wouldn't load the second map of any chapter. Not enough memory.
always feel sorry for pour people
Performance aside, I actually liked the way you played lmao, using the supply crates as cover, never did that
Haha thanks!
Yea it was kinda genius
Always love watching other people play this game. Always blows my mind how differently people play it from me.
its hard to believe that there was ever a time where computers struggled to run the source engine
only the oldest ones like u can say same about cyberpunk 2077 my pc wasnt powerfull but he was doing ok when hl2 came out it was actualy prety good optimized
@@АлександрАртурович-я7ж cool
i call cap, either HL2 today is wayy more demanding, but back then with my Geforce FX 5200 in 2011~ , it ran hl2 and cs source completely fine.
edit: yeah you just limited your fps to 6 and turned down the settings, damn
I vividly remember this area of the game running at 5-6 fps on my FX 5500 and I did what I could to replicate that experience on my current hardware. The entire game did not stay at this low fps, but many areas did chug really bad like this.
@@MetalJody1990 more like 25 fps, running at dx9 anyways with the orange box update in 2007/9. an easy fps boost was using -dxlevel 60 at launch though
@@E_lisa_a Wish I had known about forcing an older DX version. That would've worked wonders probably. In small areas, the fps would jump to around 25.
I don't know what y'all are talking about, I bought a shitty 100$ laptop from a pawn shop like 3 months ago and it runs HL2 perfectly fine on max settings
@@Raven14461 cause hl2 is over 2 decades old almost.
you should be getting more fps with fx5500, i played with a geforce 4 mx440 on my old pc and got around 40fps
Perhaps my CPU was a bottleneck
Yeah. FX 5500 should go easily over 60fps with medium/high at 1024x768
indeed i played on 3800 nvidia at 1024 res and mid settings and was ok
Did you test 2008 with vanilla Half Life ?
Because when they updated it with Orangebox engine, if was more demanding.
Possibly. I can't remember. There weren't many PC games that I tried in 2008. F.E.A.R. might've been one of them.
Half-Life 2 in 2008 was still using the EP1 Source engine, they didn't update it until 2010.
@@MetalJody1990damm I never played F.E.A.R on my PS3 it was my stepdad plus I was like a child so I couldn’t play it
hl2 was way ahead of its time and a lot of stuff changed in those 6 years
2005 me: only 5-10 FPS lowest settings lowest resolution (640x480) 💀💻🔥💥
2024 me: 1000 FPS highest settings highest resolution (1920x1080) 🤯🥳🎉
That's the dream
imagine what's going to happen 20 years from now! Probably all the games in VR with AI ememy.
All the games are gonna be available only in the cloud and 1.75% of them will be fully functional on day 1.
i feel sorry for u because at 2008 i already had pc that run hl2 on ultras in 1650 resolution and in 2004 when game just came out i played in 1024 res on medium settings
I wonder if my old 2006 PC would've run this game, probably not since I remember only playing Quake, Cereal box games and AoE2 on it.
sure it will
my computer had more fps in like 2015 (not really a fair comparison, but the computer was made before 2008) than in that year, and it was only on 2 generations after of windows
I do know one thing about the Geforce FXes, I used a 5200 for haloPC devstuffs a loong time ago and they haaate hardware texture filtering. The only way to make them useable for haloPC was to set the filtering options to performance mode.
I assume this might also help it to run Half Life 2 a little better :)
Oh cool. Thanks for sharing this bit of info. No telling if it would've made any difference tho, bc of my CPU.
I remember I had to set my computer to the lowest settings and in between levels loading I would go do something else because it took forever.
Oh yeah. The loading did take quite some time.
4k makes sense when playing old games but honestly 1080p with AA looks optimal anyway
Yeah, I agree. In this game, 4k makes the most difference on stuff that AA doesn't touch such as chain link fences.
I wonder how my crappy Lenovo would run Half-Life, that thing has a N2840, an absolutely disgusting CPU compared to even a 2008 MacBook.
I also got an RTX 3050 on my gaming laptop, but I HATE IT.
rip
man when will i ever have an actual gaming setup
No idea. I hope it's soon tho.
@@MetalJody1990 same man
oh yea the FX cards, truly some of the worst cards of that era. even a FX 5600 ran this game so bad despite being released a year earlier than HL2
I ran it on a fx 5200 and a pentium 4 3.2 Ghz and it ran it pretty well. I think I played it on high and medium presets if I am not wrong.
Cool. My CPU was much weaker than yours. Maybe it was a Celeron D. Idk.
@@MetalJody1990 Ah, that must be the reason. Greetings 🙌🏻
you just ran the same video twice, nice try! no difference!!!
At 0:30, he goes to the side a bit, that doesn't happen in the 2023 one where he goes straight ahead.
Oh you... 😆
@@TheSecondLaughingSoldier There's also the aspect ratio difference, the overall graphical differences (lower res textures), and possibly other things if you look hard enough.
Also, if you're running an FX 5500 in 2008, I feel bad for you.
@@RowanBird779 you cant take a joke....
I feel bad* for you
@@TheRealBaycon Either you are from a heavily sarcastic country or randomly played the "joke" card.
Wait... LOWEST SETTINGS???
Man if u had it at max settings, your 2008 computer would FUCKING COMBUST
Why would it lag so hard when GPU and game release at same year
@@Matthew597 Very outdated CPU
@@MetalJody1990 So, cpu bottleneck it?
heyyy same. i had an intel i5 620 and my parents gave me their rtx 3050 laptop acer swift for my birthday in 2023
pretty sure, fx 5500 would perform much better, if this used on windows xp instead windows 10.
Especially an older version of half life 2.
Even if this cpu performs badly.
my low-end phone can run Half Life 2 in 10-114 fps.
Still pretty surprised that 2008 pc couldnt run game in stable fps
My PC in 2008 wasn't new at the time. It didn't represent an actual gaming PC from that era. It's just what I had. I'm sure there were PCs in 2008 that ate HL2 for breakfast at 1080p.
directX 8 in HL2 800x600 on CRT monitor lool
wow, my childhood computer had a FX5200 with 512MB ram and i don’t remember what sh1tty Pentium processor… it was able to run cod2 minecraft and gta:sa, but idk about modern steam half life 2 lmao. i remember playing countless hours of scct in 4:3 640x480 though. Now i own an asus transformer book because of school, i have an avg of 30 frames/s on half life 1 and 2 but misteriously 60frames/s steady on HL:S.
I had FX5200, so it was even worse.
you should probably have show what cpu you were using because half life 2 only depend on cpu power not gpu
Yeah I know. I can't remember what cpu it was back then. The one I have now (and the same one in the video) is an i7-4790.
Huh?, my 2004 pc with fx 5200 128mb could run half life 2 in 800x600 res high medium settings with over 25-30 fps just fine
Oh. It must have been my terrible CPU at the time. It was a single-core Intel CPU, that's all I know. GPU performance was always held back.
Hey at least you can play half-Life 2.
How come in earlier versions of hl2 I see the metrocops recoil when they get shot? is this in the newest version in the game or have I just never seen it?
You're probably noticing it more prominently in the early PC footage because it's slowed down, that "flinching" animation plays when you shoot a Metrocop that's standing still and still plays in the latest Steam builds.
Perhaps you've noticed the ragdoll physics? Sometime after the Steampipe update the code for the ragdoll physics was affected and became more "exaggerated"
Almost every scripted physics scene has exaggerated and unrealistic physics, the train in chapter "Highway 17" knocks you off of the bridge if you don't swerve to the left, but in real-life you would be swept into the tunnel.
It is not true. I had 25FPS with low settings and 800x600 with my Celeron 2.2, 256mb ram and FX5200 128mb in 2004. That was vanilla HL2
My CPU was probably a lot worse than yours. I think maybe it was a Celeron at 1.4 GHz or something like that. The area in my footage was definitely in the single digits. I remember it being almost a slideshow. Other areas of the game were a little bit smoother.
rtx 3050 is the worst rtx series, i don't know why you bought this plug
how shit was your computer in 2008??????? i have one of the worst computers ever and it runs half life 2 (on lowest settings) perfectly
Quite shitty. It was a pre-built for general use. It had only PCI slots available on the mobo. Much older games ran fine, including emulated SNES ones.
@@MetalJody1990 wow
How was I able to run HL2 in 2004-2005 ? 🤔 at medium settings on 1280x720?
Your CPU was probably decent. Mine sucked.
pretty sure the og xbox ran this better
I think it did
The og Xbox port had many modifications done to it to make it as playable as possible on that hardware. The polygon count was heavily reduced, among other things. Digital Foundry made an interesting comparison video awhile back. Definitely go watch it.
my netbook had higher fps 😭😭

i have a gt 1030 and my game is smooth on high settings
No surprise there. A GT 1030 can handle anything 6th gen like a champ. Even some 7th gen games too.
Ram?
I don't remember. Probably 256 MB.
LOL it’s even worse than the Xbox version
My CPU sucked so much ass. Also the Xbox version has an even lower polygon count and has some walls in place of wire fences to help the performance. Basically the game was optimized as much as possible for Xbox.
@@MetalJody1990 there’s some mesh walls on xbox which actually are obscured to save on resources
The original Xbox gets better fps than that
Yeah, well, the Xbox port was cut down even further than the PC. Polygon count was lower and some chain link fences were replaced with solid walls, to lessen the processing load.
