PART 5: PAINTING BACKDROPS

  • The final part of this series is a demonstration on how to paint foreground conifers. Inspired by Bill Alexander I was able to use his technique to push the content of the backdrop further into the scene. This made a more natural transition between the backdrop and the layout. I will go back later when this section of the layout is complete so we can see some trains running through it.

    Did this on my layout. Wow. just looks fantastic. Friends and enemies think it looks amazing . Thanks so much for the tutorials. I tried other backdrop painting techniques, but this is by far the best look and the easiest method to reproduce. Thanks again Dave.

      Hi Dave glad you had success. It is so nice to see folks giving it a go. It can be very satisfying as a modeller creating a 3d art scene.

    Chris, thanks so much for this series. I've been putting off painting my backdrop for over a year. I watched this, bought some paint and hammered out 25' in three hours. I never painted anything before and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out! Thanks for the "warnings to engineers" as well! I certainly am guilty of over thinking this and not diving in sooner!

    Hand layed track is quite an art. Tom Hood first stained the ties and planted them. Then the rails are spiked in place using a track gauge for proper spacing. The turnouts components are hand made as well.

    I do not have a specific video series however if you have a look at Bill Scobie's Sn3 RGS you can get some ideas about what to do. Instead of using the black yellow to create green I would mix Yellow Ochre with white and the black yellow mixture. I would paint the mountains in without trees and lower slopes paint in Conifers using a flat 2 inch brush with one inch upstrokes. These done with a thin mix of yellow black with a touch of yellow ocher.

    Chris, great videos, just to bad you did not make them 2 yrs ago when had to paint the club back drop, think this method would have been a lot better for our backdrop. Our back drop looks more like the one you painted over. Thanks again for the videos

    Very good series. I love that you break the techniques down so that anyone should be able to do this. Can't wait to get started on my own backdrop.
    I love that these techniques can be used almost anywhere. You are modeling Canada, but this technique could also be used for North Carolina, or darken it up a little bit more and it could be Oregon or Washington.
    Thanks for posting this series!

    Thanks for the best backdrop instruction I've seen. I need to do my layout now but I'm modeling the Fall so I'm not sure how to go about the dabbing.

      Here is where I did the fall. Just add some orange yellow and red dabs. make sure you have 75% green though and warm the fall colours with brown

  • @CNLVN
    @CNLVN  11 лет назад

    These techniques are universal. In some of my other videos you can see where I have done mountains, lakes rivers and roadways. Also some distant horizon forests and hills

    Very nice tutorials - thank you
    I am wondering if you think this Dab Dab... method will work for Southwest scenery - mainly brown / reddish rock formations?
    looking foreward to your thoughts.

      JB Morrow If the landscape has trees I would think it would work. However if it is desert and rock I would use long smooth horizontal strokes.

    Excellent technique. I have watched this video before this. It would need to be miniaturized for n scale.

    • @CNLVN
      @CNLVN  3 года назад

      A Little but not as much ss you think as the relationship between viewing angle does not change but N looks farther away.

  • @Tinner7
    @Tinner7 7 лет назад

    I am planing to try this technique soon. Would you suggest smaller brush sizes for N scale? Any tip on maximum background mountain height for perspective on a 32" wide HCD layout? I really like the way this turned out in your videos

    • @CNLVN
      @CNLVN  7 лет назад +1

      I suggest you use the same size brushes as it is the ends that create the line and the dobs make for more prototype size foliage. The trick is to make softer jabs and shorter strokes. All smaller brushes will do is hold lesst paint and not create the effects you want. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for a great tutorial! Considering a 30' wall, how many oz ( or ml ) of paint will I need of each tint you used during this tutorial? Since I won't be painting anything else, I'd like to not buy more than needed.

    • @CNLVN

      A gallon of flat house for the blue. make sure it is light as dark blue makes everything dark and makes the room smaller. Also use a grey blue sky colour vs some blues which have a different greenish tint. For the tubed acrylics use high viscosity artists colours. I would think to start with one mars black, one titanium white and one medium cadmium yellow. If you run out before you are finished that is OK as it does not have to be all done at the same time. Hope this helps.

    • @jiminmichigan
      @jiminmichigan 9 лет назад

      CNLVN What size tubes for the acrylic? I am finding several sizes, up to 250ml. I would like to get all of them at once, saves on shipping.

    Chris, you and Lela did a fantastic job of this video series. I am about to start painting a backdrop on a new layout and I hit upon this series in a timely fashion. Any special painting tips for a prairies to the Rockies layout such as colours to use etc?

      +Ken P Hi Ken. I recently did a backdrop with the western colours. I used several colours to create the right effects for the landscape and mountains. I mixed titanium white with some burnt umber and added a bit of Naples yellow. This can be added into the green mixture or used directly for rock. Some panes grey can be useful as well.

    • @kenp6549
      @kenp6549 8 лет назад

    While I really enjoyed this series (I've watched it a couple of times now) what I can't get over is the fact that all of the track is hand layed...Is that really true? Do I understand correctly that a hand layed track is put in place a rail at a time, then spaced and hand hammered into place? If that's true, then, your layout really deserves a backdrop like this!!!
