- I was always intrigued by how few chords some great songs have, and how different songs can be with the same chords. So I decided to go big and find 100 songs that are (some only partly) made of three chords, transpose them to one level and play them all at once. And that's what I did. Sadly I had to divide the song in two parts because youtube still treats us like children.
He plays modal G, I think (no B note). Modal chords are thus neither major nor minor, so they are "weird" in that sense. Some musicians like the ambiguity (temporarily) until they can resolve it back to the base chord of D.
@termenzor not to mention it also makes switching from G to C a breeze.
Great - thanks
Okay :) thankyou very much!
you can be a rockstar you know
I see the D and the A but what the heck do you call the G. you're missing the 2nd fret on the A string
Minor or Major?
what are the chords you're using?
Listening to the singing is almost killing me but other than that not bad
It's not D em G it's D G A..
i made myself a song with only 3 notes. it goes f f f a f d. and then it has a part where it only uses the note d, but it sounds good. and i swear i heard this song before, which is weird cause i made it. i will have it on my channel soon. it will be my latest video.
Enjoyed your video. I was looking for ideas for easy songs for my beginner uke group, instead of ancient songs. They always want to know what pop songs they can play only learning a few chords. Tip: give chord names, group together those w/ the same progression. Beginners can't see by looking at your fingers. Also, I love to play but can't carry a tune w/ a forklift but perhaps have someone else sing. I find when I look for easy key (like C) to play, can be hard to sing, too high (I'm an alto).
Guitarists will often transpose a song in F (or other inconvenient keys) to one of the more playable keys in one of the basic 5 chord shapes: A, C, D, E, or G. That and/or use a capo.
One reason to transpose a song in F is that, if it follows the basic I-IV-V progression used in all these songs, it will require a B-flat chord.
That chord is just hard to play and get a good clean sound in the open position (at the end of the neck). So guitarists (like me) who prefer to play there transpose F.
Yes, he's skipping the B note on the A string.
He may be playing a slightly alternate version of G -- a kind of modal G that consists of the notes G and D with no 3rd note B to establish a Major chord (and B sting playing D).
(I don't know if he's a good enough player to be doing this deliberately based on the music theory that I'm explaining -- I teach guitar -- or just stumbled on this technique.)
But such a modal G is used to create a harsh-sounding version of a G that some players like.
Tempo is the word i meant to use, If you don't understand what I'm talking about I can point out the inconsistencies on your channel if you would like. This video (not by me by the way) is great at what it is. He is pointing out the Very many songs that use the same progressions. This is not some concert people are paying for, So back off the guy. He accomplished what he set out to do.
just been reading other peoples comments....oh my oh my....you got some harsh critics out there buddy....i actually think you have a lovely voice and this 100 song thing you've put together is real clever.....it takes a lot to reach some of those notes....well sung and well played. loved this....keep up the good work. I will keep looking out for more postings from you and thank you so much for sharing your talent.;)
if you want to start making guitar music check out fl studio. i have no clue of how to play guitar, yet i made a decent guitar tune. it will be on my channel soon. i made some other songs too.
hes playing 2 thirds of the G chord and ill tell ya the truth most guitarist dont play all three notes of a chord most of the time any way music is an action sport and not a tech sport lol great job thanks you increased my song list !
Not bad, but you have a few chords wrong: Labamba is C, F, G, F; Sweet Home Alabama is D, C, G; Ring of Fire is G, C, G during verse; Wild Thing is Am, D, Em; Ballad of John and Yoko is Em throughout the verse; I'm a believer is G, D, G during verse;
@termenzor i sometimes play it like that because it makes it easy to go to variations of G, like G7, which is pretty common. but yeah, i would never play it the way he does unless i was going to those variations... too weird and awkward to play
it can't be e minor, e minor is the 2nd freat of the 5th and 4th string, on the chord that your saying is e minor he mutes the 6th and 5th strings, making it impossible to be an e minor, so the chord is an A major
you can play a million times better than me but you cant sing lol all respect to you , I realy enjoyed your clip infact it is going on to my fav list thumbs up dude ........
All his examples were in major keys. And that is the typical case.
You could play in, say, Am, using Dm and Em as the other chords -- but it would give a quite different sound and "feel."
This is why you can't sing! You can't even hear! hear! You are just playing chords and singing over them but your voice doesnt harmonize . A few songs worked but not all of them.
@termenzor too bad not everyone can be as good as you.........
if only everyone could have your skill so they could needlessly knit-pick someone else's playing......
i know you did this song for the song list but on some songs your voice really sounds good, but others not. Keep up the good work this takes talent
Great job! Nice compilation. Just one suggestion, wouldn't it be more confortable to you to sing going down one tone, i.e., C-F-G? ;)
lol hes just singing to show the songs if he just played the chords we would be confused i enjoyed it man keep going and nice job
they guitar is an Australian Cole Clark, i think the model is FL-2, but i cant be sure. retails at around 1500,- AUD
This is a video helping people play guitar and people are slating his voice. Ridiculous. I found this helpful so thank you:)
What guitar is that, I would actually like that!?!? it better not be over £300 :/ how much is it new? do you know?
But yeah, it sounds better because Twist and Shout is covered from an older band... original key was F Major.
You will be able to make a tutorial video about 'all the small things' -Blink 182 .?
Thanks.it is very good^^
@MDanielo You are right. Those songs are only 3 chords, he just plays the wrong chords in a few of the songs.
great for beginners...most rock songs are of the three chord variety. Thanks For Posting!!!
Or, you can call them fifth chords, or Power chords.. But, in musical terms, you're right.
A great resource, nicely done, thank you for posting! :)
For the 5 basic key chord shapes:
A-D-E
C-F-G
D-G-A
E-A-B7 (hard to play a B major)
G-C-D
yah singings not great but it's good enough to get the message across. good stuff anyways.
Bravo - I wonder if any of the people putting in negative comments even play guitar..??
Willie and the poor boys had to laugh when I heard that are you from cairns area mate
@venomousfish I thought it was pretty nice... But it was about the guitar anyways

@venomousfish are you kiding me. hes great
Oh man, only great songs...cool video...:D
really? thats awesome! thank you for that
That's how you spell "hello" in dutch :D
disgusted................................
Yes, I've heard the term Power chord (although I never thought it was very self-descriptive so don't use it). Same with the term fifth chord because major and minor chords must contain a fifth by definition.
Even "modal" is tricky because even minor and major have modes associated with them. I was getting at the absence of a B note in the chord (and I assume that he is muting the A sting by lightly applying pressure to it because an A base note added to a G major chord sounds poorly).
What chord are they?
Great playing, not so great singing...
play guitar silently !! (no offence )
where are the strum patterns from?
how can i get this in written form
Thank you for you video very helpful

thanks for your playing it wus super my sister and brother jose like your singing
Massive repertoire, I've used this vid to demo to some of some of my guitar students the power of three chords.
What are them 3 chords? D and?
awesome compilation of songs. i've been looking to add songs to my campfire repertoire and most of these fit the bill! excellent job.
The singing changes are more epic than the chord changes...Usually takes me some thought. Very nice.
it's not a mate, it's e minor.
is Tambourine man in Drop D?
@picolodaemao3 D, G, and A?
@ensis I saw A and D
