I just watched the movie again tonight on Netflix. This is such a masterpiece. I love every bit of it! I am so glad I found this RUclips video. This is great!
My sis and I have hollered Shoot the Dog for the decades following this endearing movie. Whenever someone is slow to catch on to a comment/joke. Get it? 😂 Thanks for posting!
I like the end with the Monterrey sign along the sidewalk, as they already are in their Monterrey mindset they are trying to get get plugged into. I remember as a kid seeing this movie on TV, I was under 10 and thinking this movie was funny and scary at the same time.
I saw this movie when I was 13 and always remembered Harvey Keitel from it. Not a very flattering role but he was so good and scary in it. I never forgot him. He's a great actor.
It's always a pleasure to watch. At times it almost seems that the conversations are things we are overhearing, and a hidden camera is filming everybody with its realism
I read that Martin Scorsese sent the script to Raquel Welch and actually wanted her to play Alice. Raquel Welch wrote this in her memoir and said turning it down was her biggest regret as an actress. But there is no mention of this here so I wonder what the truth is.
My parents took me to see this when I was 10 years old. I loved it then and I still love it as an adult. The fact that I looked EXACTLY like the kid in it (her son played by Alfred Lutter) probably made me enjoy it more than others kids might. It's an adult movie and not really for kids but back then if accompanied by a parent you could get into any movie as long as it wasn't X-rated.
The Tommy character is most likely an undiagnosed A.D.D. /hyperactive case. Kris Kristofferson later plays virtually the same character in Heaven's Gate. Both films are excellent.
The tv show characters were somewhat different than the film characters. 1. In the tv show the Tommy character is more normal than the wild delinquent essayed by Alfred Lutter. 2. The Alice character in the tv show isn't as easily angered as Ellen Burstyn. 3. The Kris Kristofferson character is nowhere to be seen-which contradicts the ending of the film which has Alice and David as a serious couple. 4. The tv show went off into a more slapstick/circus clown type humour type show much of the time, than the film.
This is just a good film not very great. It was a hit then. The actress got oscar. But that time it created a hype. It's not considered a classic film now nor it's in top 10 of Scorcese.
Jay Spillers I don’t think the TV show was better as much as it was different in the TV show was good and it’s own merits I want them both. If you think of it this way it wasn’t for that movie and TV show may have never existed and that would’ve been unfortunate.
My mom was Alice. I will always love you Nadine.
All these years later still one of the best movies ever made
Watched it again 2 weeks ago

That is so funny. My daughter first saw this movie not too long ago and thought that was the funniest part. She thought that scene reminded her of us
I love Ellen Burstyn! She is beautiful and a very talented actress!

Raquel Welch said in an interview that she was first offered the script but turned it down.
Ellen Burstyn is phenomenal.
The scene where Harvey Keitel goes crazy was an intense scene. Excellent movie.

Great little piece here
It takes so much courage on the part of Scorcese to trust a novice actor to utilize his character's actions and dialogue by his own natural instinct
Explain.
I remember watching it on channel 13 here in la when I was a kid early 80’s🙂🙂🙂 took me back nice childhood days eating pioneer chicken
This is one of the best films ever made. It is in my top ten!

You looked like Alfred - too funny .
Loved her in "The Exorcist".

Amazing
A must see!.Great story and great acting!!! a well deserved oscar for Ellen.

Love
I watched the television show that was born out of this movie. Original Flo played another waitress

A man isn't primary to himself in his own life if HE has a kid.

The movie is supposed to be a classic, but I wasn't impressed.

I love it though. One of my top 10 Scorsese.
the TV show was better
@John Whirling Jay may be trolling , perhaps ?
TV show was good for grits kissers
They were both good and both different from one another. Like the movie version of MASH versus the TV show MASH.

I agree
