Back when we had a D8k it always felt underpowered or over geared for it’s size even though it was within the 300hp range. We also have a tuned D7f that could keep up with the D8 doing short pushes. Really loved running the 8k, but they have their problems with head gaskets since they used two heads on the D342 engine. We ended up selling it at auction because of that problem.
The 8K was much faster than the 8H,the later would run into a pile of dirt and slow down and torque it's way thru,8K maybe had different tuning with torque developed higher in the range maybe?it felt much more powerful than the 30 hp would suggest, to me at least, and the AC cab was a godsend back in those days of finishing a shift covered in dust.I would prefer to operate the TD25 than the Cats.
I guarantee you the D6 operator is much happier and willing to put in extra hours ahead of the D8 operator. Tough to beat ac / heat / air ride / radio after a few hours in the hot sun or cold outdoors.......
@@hjorleifuringason2778 No ear protection with straight exhaust, dust with just a wet handkerchief but who did that? Solid ride seat guaranteed to make your a bit shorter after 25 years.
The 8 looks tired a fresh one responds better than that, could be governor wear but the rest of the tractor looks tired too. The 6 has got fewer hours and one of cats best engines the 3306. They are pushing loose dirt and the 6 will probably do it more efficiently but if they are moving rock that is different. There is no substitute for the 14-15 ton advantage the 8 has over the 6. I always had a soft spot for the H's and the K's. but at the end of the day I will get in my king ranch and drive my tired ass home with my leather. stereo. and.cup holders.
@@huckbeduck Bare 6R weighs 42000. 8K weighs 70000. What you hang on them from there is what makes it spread out. 6R LGP with cab, limb risers,10ft semi U on front and 3 shank on the back weighs 61xxx, right with a bare back open 7G. Most bareback open 8Ks will be a touch over 80000. 9Gs will be knocking on 100000. Used to take 3 trucks to haul an old 9. Blade on one, tracks on another, tractor with winches on #3. 14 ft blade, tracks the easiest way left to reduce the tractor weight. Watched a running very usable 58 D9D sell for 5000 at a farm sale in 2001 as no one wanted to move it. I'm still kicking myself.
6R will spoil ya with diff steer. 8K is big enough for pan assist and still easy enough to tote around. 9 G,H or K are indeed a hoss. 8N seems top heavy. Long ways from a 6 9U.
Wrong, I worked at Fresh Kills Landfill for 28 years as a Tractor Operator. Back in the 80s, we had D8 K's. ( more than 125 of them) We used them to do everything. They pulled our Athey Wagons, pulled our scrapers, made our cover stockpiles, and pushed the garbage. The problem was that they were always overheating. In the late 80's, the City decided to buy all new machines. They bought about 120 D8L's and 20 D9N's. What a big difference. With the new radiator systems. Overheating was a thing of the past. Plus, air conditioning and the ability to easily start in the winter. There is no comparison. Then the City bought 12 D6R LGP's ( swamp cats) for our cover operations. I have pushed millions of yards of dirt and made at least a hundred miles of road with the D6R LGP machines. I have worn the bottoms out on several machines. A few years before I retired. The City sent my 3 favorite machines to HO Penn for total rebuilds. One came back with an extra heavy duty bottom and tracks. Any one of those machines can easily outwork a D8K, and never overheat. BTW, did I mention the 6 way blade. Once you get used to it. You will never go back. Also, during the WTC crisis. The City bought 20 D9R with extra heavy duty tracks, rock guards, and axillary transmission coolers. Including my own personal (to use on the job) machine with a ripper. These had the 'tiller' controls and 4 way blades. IUOE Local 15 ret (38 yrs)

I agree
Is seems to have been the norm in America for decades to use dozers with open cab. How operators were able to put up with this is beond me

You ever run a D-8k and if so did it get hot or overheat when working it.
Hahaha too old but still can work amazing
Way less computer chips in the D8.
Not really versus, it’s teaming
Ran 8K for 10 years,awesome machine
Grouser pads low on both but the first fixie I ran was an old d6 with hand clutches. Them old iron machines will push.
Show the electric ones , let see how they compair, lol nice job thanks,,, BigAl California praise lord.
The 300hp D8K is considerably bigger
6 faster on feet but 8 get in there and dig /push hard
Thank you SIR. What is the JOB for. Looks huge?????
I often wondered about that match, very similar size.
Hell Yeah D8K

Agree, 3306 is one Cat’s best engines but this particular 6R has the C9.
14-15 ton advantage?, Wow! Where does it hide all that extra iron? It doesn't look that much larger.
