Lips Like Sugar and U2's New Year's Day make me think about driving around San Francisco in my Volkswagen Rabbit with an ugly tape deck hanging dangerously close to the gear shift. I wish I listened to this song more then. I've heard it much more in recent decades. The Killing Moon is one of those songs that feels more 80's than just about any other song.
This is such a great song. If you want another song from the era, check out Love My Way by The Psychedelic Furs. It's in my opinion one of the best songs to come out of the 80's.
The Psychedelic Furs is good recommendation, though I like the songs President Gas and Sister Europe better. Two other great bands from the era are The Monochrome Set (check out Jet Set Junta and Eine Symphonie des Grauens) and The Chameleons (known in the States as The Chameleons UK), which I think is the most underrated band of the era.
@@annother3350 The Cutter is superb. 'Couldn't cut the mustard . .' Such a masterpiece of a song. The music and lyrics go together so perfectly and superbly catch this sort of dark, compulsive romanticism. It evokes images of werewolves, vampires, or even the devil himself. Giving in to these creatures and their seductions, or these entities themselves giving in to their impulses (perhaps violent?) in opposition to their romantic desires., and the mirror of these sorts of fantastical encounters in complicated human relationships. truly a unique and seriously talented band. Echo's voice fits their music so perfectly. Dark, moody and mysterious.Post-punk perfection. This song holds up now and forever.
One of my favorite post-punk bands! From Britain. So ahead of their time. And I think you both nailed it. To me, tension and suspense and danger nearby equals fishing in a lake with leeches, at once relaxing but you never know if something unsettling might happen. They're the same! They actually formed in the late 70s but Ocean Rain was the first album I heard by them and it came out when I was 22 in the early 80s. Everybody that I knew played it constantly. It was all over the college alt music charts. Everybody in my post punk band had a copy and we played it constantly. My drummer was so obsessed with it he figured out the drum parts for every song on the album, and this album is one of those where literally every song on it is pure gold. It's sometimes melancholy but it's so beautiful and melodic and sometimes carefree and it's so driving and his voice is unique. And the songs are all over the map in terms of tempo and feel and lyrics. They were one of the best. If you ever have a spare 35 minutes, just hop on RUclips and search for Echo & the Bunnymen Ocean Rain and just listen through the playlist; it's nine songs. And most of them are between 3 and 4 minutes. Silver, the opening track, is quite uplifting, and there are others, Yo Yo Man is a mix of really uplifting and kind of tense and unsettling. Nocturnal Me and Crown of Thorns are dark and disturbing, but really catchy. I like this one as well for something upbeat by them, Seven Seas. These songs can really get stuck in your head for sure. m.ruclips.net/video/7J51vQ0KLBg/видео.html
Great band. Good live as well. I also got to see the lead singer do an acoustic set in my local theatre. It was incredible. That voice in a room designed for acoustics is amazing.
"Suspenseful". Perfect! The Bunnymen were so good at creating atmosphere and suspense. Its a truly theatrical piece of music with a real undertow to it. I loved The Bunnymen.
Just saw these guys live in concert for the first time after 30 + years of listening to them. Such a great show for a small venue. Love these guys. This song starts off ominous and ends up joyous and lovely.
“The Killing Moon” opens the movie “Donnie Darko” a very underrated film. I loved it the first time seeing it. This movie stayed with me for days, even weeks after watching. It is intense. cruel, vulgar, funny, mysterious, shocking, somber, and teen angst w/ an awesome soundtrack from the 80’s. Check out “Donnie Darko” Echo and the Bunnymen , New Wave. Super cool. Underrated.
I watched that Donnie Darko. Didn't think it was something I would like. But I did. shhhhhh. Don't tell. Yeah I agree, Underated. I would recommend as well to those who think it's just a freak show.
With a lot of '80s songs it helps to treat the lyrics as poetry - the important thing is how they make you feel. The Killing Moon is very dramatic, which has always appealed to me, especially since I was in my early twenties when it came out.
Oh this is so my jam ,saw them in the Top rank Cardiff in 1983,18 years old,my daughter came with me 2 months ago to see them in Birmingham,I'm now 58 and they were as good as ever!
Watching this again because I'm so glad when someone discovers Echo and gives them a little attention. Lex is so cute. I love the "fishing in a lake with leeches."
Echo and the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978. The original line-up was vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, and bassist Les Pattinson. Pete de Freitas joined as the drummer in 1980. The early band used a drum machine that many people speculated to be "Echo" but this was denied by the band. Sadly in 1989 drummer Pete de Freitas was killed in a motorcycle accident while on his way to band practice.
Such a great band. WS’ guitar playing is incredibly mesmerizing and melodic at the same time on most of their tunes. Saw them a few years ago in Philly.
Lex never fails to make me smile, so cute and so open to the vibe of every song. Then coming out with the most left field take on it, what an imagination, so unique and totally unpredictable. Poor Brad just looks bemused by everything, and him looking to Lex for clarity is hilarious.
So glad you gave this a listen, Brad think you nailed it, dark, suspense, edgy with a melancholic chorus. One of my favourite tracks of all time and Will Sergeant’s guitar is 🔥.
From the classic Ocean Rain album - 'fishing where there's leeches' is pretty good, the album is over the top romantic, dramatic, with danger and darkness.
Finally! Echo & The Bunnymen. One of my favorite bands. 🐰 🐇 There is a concert video on RUclips that's titled "Echo & The Bunnymen live at the Royal Albert Hall". It's my favorite concert video. The performance, sound, lighting, camera work, audience energy. Perfection.
I loved this band back in the day and not giving my age away got to see them at the old Birmingham Odeon in 1983 lol. There is a real melancholy in Ian McCulloch's voice and anyone wanting to hear more should listen to their Crocodiles album.
Used to hear this on satellite radio channel when I was driving my young sons to school. They thought singer said “gangster whale”. This has been the gangster whale song ever since
Omg this is one of my favourite band from the 80s and this was my favourite song from them 🤩😍they had a lot of other good songs from then too. I love you guys for reacting to the bunny men 😎😍😍😍😍so cool
Great band. The Cutter. Bring On The Dancing Horses. Nothing Lasts Forever. Seven Seas. Lips Like Sugar. Ian McCulloch great song writer with a gorgeous voice.
Another icon of the 80s is the queen of early goth... Siouxsie & The Banshees. Start with the hits: "Spellbound" and "Cities in Dust". You'll love her.
I’m 15 again, you’ve took me right back, in my bedroom listening to this my friend had taped this for me. I never had money for records unlike now that you can stream music.
'80s alternative/Indie, new wave (darkwave)! Gothic rock/post-punk group. They are from the UK. I remember the video for this song gave a vampire vibe when I was a kid. Was only shown at night time, Cutting Edge show on MTV for alternative music. And 120 Minutes, similar show on MTV. And on college/underground/alternative radio stations. This group was during the late '70s, '80s and early '90s. Lex was right about the melancholy feel and Brad was right, too. Very atmospheric, ethereal music, too. If yall heard this song somewhere before, probably on Donnie Darko, lol. A movie made in the early 2000s, set in the '80s. Creepy movie, played lots of '80s new wave and alternative stuff on that movie. See more of Echo and The Bunnymen videos/songs "Heads Will Roll", "The Cutter", "Lips like Sugar", "Show of Strength", "Nothing Lasts Forever", " Bringing on the Dancing Horses", etc They were inspired by Velvet Underground (proto-punk group), Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Doors and others. Similar groups to them are Psychedelic Furs, Killing Joke, Sioxsee and the Banshees, The Smiths, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Joy Division, The Cult (early stuff), The Church, The Chameleons, The The, Coldplay, Interpol, Arcade Fire, The Killers, Flaming Lips, Modern English, early U2 , and others. Yall need to do another new wave/post-punk stream.
3:45- Like doing something peaceful right before you hear the "dunnnun....dunnundunnun"dunnundunnundunnundunnun!!!" Like a peaceful falling with a danger undertone.
Oh hell yeah, for us Goths out there, merry meets! Used to hear this track back in the day late late into the early mornings in cavernous dark clubs playing Bauhaus, Siousxie, Cure... good days :)
It is suspenseful, but it's also fishing with leaches. Concept...true Goth. About being on the edge with a cutting edge to your preception = 80's mindset. We started the decade with nothing and ended with excess. No one ever talks about that... it was so important in order to understand the art of the time, now lost.
Americans listening to the great ‘Echo & the Bunnymen’…I’m stunned! But bravo guys 👏 It’s all about education. While you’ll try to get the music, you’ll never get the English alternative scene of that time period that spawned this band and their music. These dudes were really alternative at the time. If you’re struggling to get this…you’ll have no hope with ‘The Cutter’…Echo’s biggest hit. Well done for Lex feeling the tune.
Echo and the Bunnymen has always been really popular here with the creative folks and hipsters. They had decent boost in mainstream popularity after the movie "Donnie Darko" (great movie btw) featured this song in its soundtrack.
I am always amazed at the way EATB can create songs that have so much dark tension, but with a tiny sliver of hopefulness. It’s why they are one of my very favorite bands of all time. The LP “Heaven Up Here” is a masterpiece. And I’d say they have about 30 songs altogether that are just perfect 10/10 songs in my book. No one lives in the crossroads of goth, new wave, glam rock & post-punk as well as Echo & The Bunnymen.
An Iconic song. Transports me back to the feelings of that time. I remember the chorus being credited to God, as the singer awoke with those words in his head.
I heard that song for the first time during Donnie Darko and instantly fell in love with it. I still have the picture of the guy with the leaf blower in my head when I hear it.

I am transported back to the UK 1984-1985, listening to Radio Caroline late at night in an ECP.
Finally. Someone reacting to one of my all time favorite bands. Seen them in London in 1987. Fantastic live.
Check out “Donnie Darko”
Echo and the Bunnymen , New Wave. Super cool.
FINALLY! I LOVE this song!!! So good. Loved it since it came out. A must do is also Lips Like Sugar!
If they like the vibe on this they should listen to 'Cuts You Up' by Peter Murphy.
Saw them back in the 80's with New Order at the Mann in Philly. One of my favorite concerts.
Agreed, WS is a brilliant but massively underrated guitarist.
Lex's analogies are so random lol, love it!
From the classic Ocean Rain album - 'fishing where there's leeches' is pretty good, the album is over the top romantic, dramatic, with danger and darkness.
Finally! Echo & The Bunnymen. One of my favorite bands. 🐰 🐇
There is a concert video on RUclips that's titled "Echo & The Bunnymen live at the Royal Albert Hall".
I was blessed to see Echo and the bunny man in concert with the original singer... They opened up for a New Order...
Wow so long since I've heard the bunnymen. Awesome you guys rock.
Thank you for your reaction. I would love to see you react to more Echo and the Bunnymen.
This song is so gangsta that it doesn't matter which decade you play it in -- it still rocks.
A backlit smoke-filled stage, with the Bunnymen silhouetted to the sound of Ave Maria, was the opening of one of their concerts. Unforgettable.
This is one of my favorite bands, but the highlight of this video was "It's like fishing where there's leeches". I loved that!
One thing you can always count on with this band is incredibly lush production. This track has a gothic feel.
My favourite band of the 80's. Saw them many times. Their show at the Albert Hall is here too.
One of my fave bands as a teenager from the 80’s. Class act!
Absolutely love Ian McCulloch's voice.
I love this song so much. Lips like sugar, another great one.
Used to hear this on satellite radio channel when I was driving my young sons to school. They thought singer said “gangster whale”. This has been the gangster whale song ever since
Loved this since high school in the early 80’s. Almost sounds like a James Bond theme song.
I love, love, LOVE this song! Thank you for reacting to it. ❤️
Takes me back. Great song. Was pleased to rediscover it some years back when it was used in the film Donny Darko
Gotta appreciate that lyrics video creator who decided to make a lyric video using white text over a majority light background. Fantastic!
One of the best songs ever written. We know this because Ian McCulloch says so. He wrote it btw.
See more of Echo and The Bunnymen videos/songs "Heads Will Roll", "The Cutter", "Lips like Sugar", "Show of Strength", "Nothing Lasts Forever", " Bringing on the Dancing Horses", etc
They were inspired by Velvet Underground (proto-punk group), Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Doors and others.
One of my all time favourite songs!
Amazing Amazing song. Every Halloween I start listening to Echo along with The Church they are 2 of the most Underrated bands of Alltime
This songs music is actually David Bowies "Space Oddity" played in reverse.
3:45- Like doing something peaceful right before you hear the "dunnnun....dunnundunnun"dunnundunnundunnundunnun!!!"
Like a peaceful falling with a danger undertone.
This reminds me of my first love. Gives me chills pretty much every time I hear the opening.
Oh hell yeah, for us Goths out there, merry meets! Used to hear this track back in the day late late into the early mornings in cavernous dark clubs playing Bauhaus, Siousxie, Cure... good days :)
Lex is so right! It's a very chill song, but has a sense of danger within it. Idk why, but it's why I've always loved it so much!
“Lips like sugar” has to be a mandatory choice.
It is suspenseful, but it's also fishing with leaches. Concept...true Goth. About being on the edge with a cutting edge to your preception = 80's mindset. We started the decade with nothing and ended with excess. No one ever talks about that... it was so important in order to understand the art of the time, now lost.
Quintessential song for encapsulating that classic melancholy 80's vibe. "Seven Seas" from this same album also a favorite of mine.
Have to second everyone saying "Lips Like Sugar"
The most underrated rock band in history. By a mile. OMG, they are a treasure.
Aw, Lex is great. She’s a bit mad & seems like a lot of fun. You guys make a good team 👍
I heard that song for the first time during Donnie Darko and instantly fell in love with it. I still have the picture of the guy with the leaf blower in my head when I hear it.
Lips like sugar, and their cover of the door’s “people are strange” are really good.
Ocean Rain Live at Liverpool was an outstanding song. Put the headphones on for that one.
