I wish this was around when I was learning my reverse. Another great video Scott!

I appreciate you man! I also wish I knew all that know now when I first started playing, would have saved me a lot of time! However I try to look at it more positively and think “what’s the next thing I don’t know right now, which will really help myself and others in the future” - this motivates me a lot to look for new principles and tips both as a player and as a coach 😊

01:58 reduce the jump? Great video. First great English language reverse tutorial I've seen

Hey Ezra, I wasn’t the clearest in the video (my bad) - I explained it in greater length in the comments 😌
And thank you, will most likely (and hopefully be redoing these videos once the bigger ball comes out)

    Hi Scott,
I disagree with the backspin on the reverse part. Yes you lose speed on that serve, however your jump is increased. It happens as the ball is slowed down it demands less energy to change direction so that with a backspin reverse you get the least speed as well as the most jump.
This is exactly how me personally, Rasmus or Grant get so much jump on the ball. Here's proof: ruclips.net/user/shorts2QKCGpsYtcg

@@jacobroundnet the jump is not ‘increased’ given added backspin rotation with the velocity staying constant.
If backspin is now added to the ball (with the same velocity as pure clockwise spin), it will reduce the speed (becuase of the backspin) and jump from the potential serve you could hit with the same velocity because you are trading 5 pure clockwise rotations for 4 + 1 backspin rotation = less speed and less jump - this is called ‘purity of spin’, and is the same when we talk about top spin with the cut serve
You will still get a good jump as long as you get several rotations, but you will not get the maximum jump given the velocity you are putting into the ball because the ball will rotate fewer times through clockwise spin and trade off more for backspin in comparison to if you just achieved total clockwise spin you would get the biggest jump.
Getting backspin rotations is usually a consequence of tossing it backwards when severing, and this also helps the server prolong their carry contact and get around and under the ball easier and more often (just like getting underneath a soccer ball is easier when it’s rolling towards you vs away from you)
So the tradeoff of tossing it back makes it easier to get the contact required, but it results in backspin rotations which decreases the speed and the maximum jump the ball could get with the same velocity.
And just like HTR, these video are just the tip of the iceberg, it’s hard to break down such complex skills in 5-10 minutes for the masses to enjoy 🤟

In my experience backspin sometimes increase contact time of the ball with the net. This could allow the ball for more time to translate the spin into lateral motion. But that's just my 2 cents.

That may be down to the slower speed which gives the ball longer to grip and contact the net - although without scientific data this is just a conceptual logical guess - would love to see someone test this one day

@ I really tried to understand your point, I even read your response at least 5 times. However I am still sure that with the perfect balance of clockwise and backspin you get the best jump whilst trading speed. And I just say it based on my own experimenting as well as of off analysing lots of pro-player serves. I guess we would need to discuss that again in the future.
Disagreeing with you doesn't mean that I am not open to changing my opinion. It also doesn't undermine my appreciation for your content as well as such a thorough response.
Wishing you all the best Scott
