01:58 reduce the jump? Great video. First great English language reverse tutorial I've seen
Hey Ezra, I wasn’t the clearest in the video (my bad) - I explained it in greater length in the comments 😌 And thank you, will most likely (and hopefully be redoing these videos once the bigger ball comes out)
I wish this was around when I was learning my reverse. Another great video Scott!
I appreciate you man! I also wish I knew all that know now when I first started playing, would have saved me a lot of time! However I try to look at it more positively and think “what’s the next thing I don’t know right now, which will really help myself and others in the future” - this motivates me a lot to look for new principles and tips both as a player and as a coach 😊
Hi Scott, I disagree with the backspin on the reverse part. Yes you lose speed on that serve, however your jump is increased. It happens as the ball is slowed down it demands less energy to change direction so that with a backspin reverse you get the least speed as well as the most jump. This is exactly how me personally, Rasmus or Grant get so much jump on the ball. Here's proof: ruclips.net/user/shorts2QKCGpsYtcg
@@jacobroundnet the jump is not ‘increased’ given added backspin rotation with the velocity staying constant. If backspin is now added to the ball (with the same velocity as pure clockwise spin), it will reduce the speed (becuase of the backspin) and jump from the potential serve you could hit with the same velocity because you are trading 5 pure clockwise rotations for 4 + 1 backspin rotation = less speed and less jump - this is called ‘purity of spin’, and is the same when we talk about top spin with the cut serve You will still get a good jump as long as you get several rotations, but you will not get the maximum jump given the velocity you are putting into the ball because the ball will rotate fewer times through clockwise spin and trade off more for backspin in comparison to if you just achieved total clockwise spin you would get the biggest jump. Getting backspin rotations is usually a consequence of tossing it backwards when severing, and this also helps the server prolong their carry contact and get around and under the ball easier and more often (just like getting underneath a soccer ball is easier when it’s rolling towards you vs away from you) So the tradeoff of tossing it back makes it easier to get the contact required, but it results in backspin rotations which decreases the speed and the maximum jump the ball could get with the same velocity. And just like HTR, these video are just the tip of the iceberg, it’s hard to break down such complex skills in 5-10 minutes for the masses to enjoy 🤟
In my experience backspin sometimes increase contact time of the ball with the net. This could allow the ball for more time to translate the spin into lateral motion. But that's just my 2 cents.
That may be down to the slower speed which gives the ball longer to grip and contact the net - although without scientific data this is just a conceptual logical guess - would love to see someone test this one day
@ I really tried to understand your point, I even read your response at least 5 times. However I am still sure that with the perfect balance of clockwise and backspin you get the best jump whilst trading speed. And I just say it based on my own experimenting as well as of off analysing lots of pro-player serves. I guess we would need to discuss that again in the future. Disagreeing with you doesn't mean that I am not open to changing my opinion. It also doesn't undermine my appreciation for your content as well as such a thorough response. Wishing you all the best Scott
Love the idea of “finding a new midpoint” on a toss! Never thought of it that way before. Great pointers!
@@treythompson3706 it never needed to be a thing a long time ago when players were only serving with one hand - receivers could just start in the final midpoint, but now with so many ambi servers you have a midpoint before and then after the toss as now once one of the hands are no longer possible to serve with the range therefore decreases setting a new midpoint for the receiver - if you now watch top receivers receive you will ‘see’ them do this all like clockwork, whether they are doing it fully consciously or not 🤟🫳

what about defensive footwork? can you force more difficult footwork for the defensive team? whilst keeping your footwork doable? Also, what about crosses? Crossing through your team player' s quadrant can result in a difficult set, do you have any rule of thumb for such cases, or how to mitigate the impact it has?

Thank you so much for the kind words! ❤
Always on point buddy! Ready for more def wife highlights at worlds!
That was a super helpful video, but what do you do if the set is dead center?
@@margatejp hiya! Thanks for the nice words about the video If the ball is set dead centre, then it’s principle 4 of how to defend that is highlighted - “the closer the ball is set to landing centre, the closer we are to net” as the hitter now has 360 degrees available
Scott makes these tough roles and responsibilities look so easy, gotta get out and practice some more D
None of it is ever easy as you know 😉 but hopefully everyone can start to understand what is going wrong on certain defensive plays in order to improve in the future - that’s the first stage to progress in any sport!
Regarding the last three principles, how does it work for two players rather than one? For instance, "should" both players be in point B, or should you for instance cover A if your partner is in C? And how do you divide the height/ range among the defence players, especially taking the necessary time into account (for for instance the second touch after a block)?
This is great question - this is the next stage of defence (individual roles and responsibilities) which will be the next video on the channel 😌
@@RoundnetCoachingSB cool, I'm checking it out!
Oh my dear, I lovvvvvee how youre breaking up the movements into stages to train. It is so much more obvious to learn this complex movement! Please keep up the great work❤
How should you decide whether to play open defence or push/pull defence? e.g. Observing the opponents and if they pull a lot, play push/pull defense?
@@Irianvlogs fantastic question: based on our abilities as defenders, the hitters preferences, which one we can get in system in based which type it serve we do etc - a video will be created on this soon, for now, just know you need to be good at both because you will find yourself in pull/push or open even if you did not plan to be, (didn’t have the time to rotate, or the rally is on going etc) that’s why it’s important to focus more on the principles (be opposite, with eyes eyes on the ball, and within the distance of the ball to net) rather than a specific system itself 😊 ‘Situations always change, and the principles are there to guide you in any situation’
watched this video three times and still can´t do it😅🤧💀

Thanks for putting out this type of content! Really helps to practice, especially in places where roundnet has not yet exploded T_T (Netherlands, EU). Q: I feel that when performing a phantom toss, it helps to have some upward motion in order to give the serving hand more time to hit. Is that something you would recommend?
@@wouter127 hey man! I appreciate and am very happy to hear tyat! I recommend checking out the reel on my IG where I talk about the phantom toss in detail, but in a less detailed manner, focus on going palm up to palm down, and don’t ’toss’ the ball, just allow the momentum of your motion produce the flight path for your phantom toss 🔥

@@rehagelsvenja3685 Thank you so much for the comment! ❤️ I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the video 😊 Greetings from Finland! 🇫🇮
Lovely stuff as always! I’d actually say that in some cases people might get more power from a backhand than a regular hit, but then they’re not really doing the basic flick that can be disguised but more like a full on backhand boom that is easier to read. I just noticed this as my background is in disc golf so there’s thousands of hours repetition in certain backhand body mechanics that makes my backhand strong.
@@Kuutti_Roundnet so it’s key to understand a flick = over the net hit, backhand hit = off net hit Although you may have more more power now with a backhand when set off net, you have a greater maximum power output with your left hand if the numbers of hours practiced were equal Jonah and I actually did a 2 min section on this, but we decided to edit it out to not make the video too long and keep it just about flicking for now 😄
Great video as always Scott. One key thing that I think is missing that Preston talks about on his coaching channel is letting the ball roll from the base of your palm to your fingertips to generate more spin on the ball and keep it low. What do you think?
Hey Ezra, thank you! These details were covered in the ‘how to hit video’ and I didn’t want to repeat everything, but instead primarily focus on the differences so I left out the contact point on the hand, and viewing the ball like a face (ear, mouth, head etc) and those things just like the follow through stay consistent throughout the regular form, or flicking form😊
@@RoundnetCoachingSB Oh true, I forgot. Thanks Scott.
