what about defensive footwork? can you force more difficult footwork for the defensive team? whilst keeping your footwork doable? Also, what about crosses? Crossing through your team player' s quadrant can result in a difficult set, do you have any rule of thumb for such cases, or how to mitigate the impact it has?

Great video as always! Can you share some drills to practice apply these concepts? P.S. GL at worlds!

This content is unreal! So well explained & demonstrated, plus the match clips are so good for putting it into context! Keep it up Scott!
Thank you so much for the kind words! ❤
Always on point buddy! Ready for more def wife highlights at worlds!
That was a super helpful video, but what do you do if the set is dead center?
@@margatejp hiya! Thanks for the nice words about the video If the ball is set dead centre, then it’s principle 4 of how to defend that is highlighted - “the closer the ball is set to landing centre, the closer we are to net” as the hitter now has 360 degrees available
Scott makes these tough roles and responsibilities look so easy, gotta get out and practice some more D
None of it is ever easy as you know 😉 but hopefully everyone can start to understand what is going wrong on certain defensive plays in order to improve in the future - that’s the first stage to progress in any sport!
Regarding the last three principles, how does it work for two players rather than one? For instance, "should" both players be in point B, or should you for instance cover A if your partner is in C? And how do you divide the height/ range among the defence players, especially taking the necessary time into account (for for instance the second touch after a block)?
This is great question - this is the next stage of defence (individual roles and responsibilities) which will be the next video on the channel 😌
@@RoundnetCoachingSB cool, I'm checking it out!
Oh my dear, I lovvvvvee how youre breaking up the movements into stages to train. It is so much more obvious to learn this complex movement! Please keep up the great work❤
How should you decide whether to play open defence or push/pull defence? e.g. Observing the opponents and if they pull a lot, play push/pull defense?
@@Irianvlogs fantastic question: based on our abilities as defenders, the hitters preferences, which one we can get in system in based which type it serve we do etc - a video will be created on this soon, for now, just know you need to be good at both because you will find yourself in pull/push or open even if you did not plan to be, (didn’t have the time to rotate, or the rally is on going etc) that’s why it’s important to focus more on the principles (be opposite, with eyes eyes on the ball, and within the distance of the ball to net) rather than a specific system itself 😊 ‘Situations always change, and the principles are there to guide you in any situation’
watched this video three times and still can´t do it😅🤧💀

@@alexhart1763Thank you Alex! Feel free to also show it present 4.0 players you know too. Thanks for putting out this type of content! Really helps to practice, especially in places where roundnet has not yet exploded T_T (Netherlands, EU). Q: I feel that when performing a phantom toss, it helps to have some upward motion in order to give the serving hand more time to hit. Is that something you would recommend?
@@wouter127 hey man! I appreciate and am very happy to hear tyat! I recommend checking out the reel on my IG where I talk about the phantom toss in detail, but in a less detailed manner, focus on going palm up to palm down, and don’t ’toss’ the ball, just allow the momentum of your motion produce the flight path for your phantom toss 🔥
@@RoundnetCoachingSB Thanks, for replying!🤩 That makes a lot of sense. Will start to practice!

@@rehagelsvenja3685 Thank you so much for the comment! ❤️ I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the video 😊 Greetings from Finland! 🇫🇮
Lovely stuff as always! I’d actually say that in some cases people might get more power from a backhand than a regular hit, but then they’re not really doing the basic flick that can be disguised but more like a full on backhand boom that is easier to read. I just noticed this as my background is in disc golf so there’s thousands of hours repetition in certain backhand body mechanics that makes my backhand strong.
@@Kuutti_Roundnet so it’s key to understand a flick = over the net hit, backhand hit = off net hit Although you may have more more power now with a backhand when set off net, you have a greater maximum power output with your left hand if the numbers of hours practiced were equal Jonah and I actually did a 2 min section on this, but we decided to edit it out to not make the video too long and keep it just about flicking for now 😄
Great video as always Scott. One key thing that I think is missing that Preston talks about on his coaching channel is letting the ball roll from the base of your palm to your fingertips to generate more spin on the ball and keep it low. What do you think?
Hey Ezra, thank you! These details were covered in the ‘how to hit video’ and I didn’t want to repeat everything, but instead primarily focus on the differences so I left out the contact point on the hand, and viewing the ball like a face (ear, mouth, head etc) and those things just like the follow through stay consistent throughout the regular form, or flicking form😊
@@RoundnetCoachingSB Oh true, I forgot. Thanks Scott.
Hey Scottie, cheers from Brazil man, that's a nice video to learn how to flick. We're just starting things here and would be very nice (if possible) to have some drills to learn and practice roundnet, I know it's not easy to create and edit a video but would be very nice. Congrats a lot for the content man, it's really helpful <3
Hey man! Thanks for the love and message! My aim with this channel is to release more drills soon, but I want to focus on the theory first before showing the practical, because practical is sub-optimal without the theory 😊 There are currently a lot of drills on my Patreon page as well as some other coaching content. Over the next 2 years I will have hopefully released all the theory and practical drills on this RUclips channel :)
@@RoundnetCoachingSB Thanks a lot for the reply, I didn't know you had a Patreon, I'll definitely take a look into that, love the way you're teaching theory and I want to get better at Roundnet. Hope you can get done with your plan of content here on RUclips, will be here cheering for you.

This video is so huge. You da goat Scottie
Appreciate you Collin! An even bigger video coming next however…👀
I get more toppspinn than sidespinn, any tips to fix that?
This usually occurs because the initial contact is too high in the hand (in the fingers and not the upper palm) and this results in you not getting around it enough to generate corkscrew spin despite getting over it
Hey Scott, great video ofc, but I think you forgot to add elements to the end screen!
You are a gem Jacob, thank you for reminding me! 💎

Hey Scott, is there anything you'd recommend for someone trying to learn how to dive while avoiding nhz? For me, it's difficult to even dive over the net w/o hitting, seems like a mental block, or I just don't know how to land.
Yes, and I will be covering this in a future video (although some higher priority ones will be released first), and during my in-person clinics this summer As a starter I would say really practice combining the shuffle step with the crossstep for certain hits to avoid the need for diving to improve your footwork first, BUT that doesn’t eliminate diving, it will just reduces the probability of you needed to dive a large amount of times for now
This is the best cut serve explanation I’ve seen! I’ve been trying to figure it out for 2 years now haha
Nothing is ever perfect, but I try my best! Glad you enjoyed the video🤟
Loved this video! Wanted to ask if throwing helps the most or if there is a slow repetition I can do to slowly learn how to apply that spin without hitting full speed? Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! I’m personally not a big advocate for throwing it for the cut For isolating the skill to learn the hand contact I recommend the knee drill and progressive serving drill while using the slow mo feature on your phone to give yourself feedback on your contact and spin on the ball, pretty sure both of these are on my IG page
i used to think i had a cut and only recently, once i figured out how to actually cut, i realize that was a jam. haha. awesome video as always :)
I was the same in 2022 man! It truly was a ‘good jam’ tho 😆 I appreciate you man! 🫶
