- 80s ninja movies were full of sword fights, rooftop chases, and throwing stars. But amidst the flashy chaos, very few of these films offered an authentic look at what being a ninja truly meant.
Enter The Last Ninja, a made-for-TV movie that might just be the most authentic western ninja film of its time. Unlike the typical "ninja assassin" clichés, this film goes deeper into the stealthy, strategic world of the real shinobi.

This was actually my favorite ninja movie, a must watch film for ninja fans
With Mike Stone playing a terrorist, who also appeared in "American Ninja II" and he taught Michael Dudikoff some martial arts.
This was the best ninja movie. I wish they'd made a sequel.
It was a pilot.
I loved this movie as a kid. I always got Michael Becker mixed up with Andy Gibb.
I loved this TV movie when I was a kid,it took me forever to find it as an adult. It's a great movie.
I didn’t even see him in this whole preview. He’s that good
At the time of this feature, Michael Beck was three years out of Xanadu. He cited that movie as the very reason he became box office poison (basically persona non grata in the industry). Today, the stench of that association would have been gone long before then and he would have had a realistic shot at a rebound. But back then, it stuck.
In plain English, casting him was like casting Madonna (post-1987).
I have this on dvd it good too be a tv movie from the 80s a must watch for ninja fans.
Always loved this movie as a kid. I have a bootleg DVD I got off of eBay. Wish there was an official remastered release.
There already was a remastered release a couple years ago that was available on Amazon.
Reminds me of this show that looked into the ninja and they had Stephen K Haynes in it. They had a raid done by SEALs done in one part where they had to "assassinate" a stand-in by taking his hat off. The SEALs did a complete attack in force and with weapons. Haynes did it without any equipment other than what he carried as a production assistant to clean the camera lenses. His strategy was to wear down the guards to the point where they started to disregard him and then he attacked getting the stand-in's hat off.
I remember watching that
Yep the seals killed everybody, he went for the specific target.
Somewhere in that documentary if I am correct he also demonstrates a technique where he captures a sword, drops low, rolls and cuts at the legs. All in one fluid motion.
Takes some practice to execute such a move.
Yes, that was all real ninja techniques and strategy. Hayes is an expert and is a master of this stuff.
Remember this one, Pretty good movie. Not all acction all over the place but very well balanced origin/present day story. Good cast too, Michael Beck, Mako & Richard Lynch allways a fantastic antagonist.
OMG forget the movie. Thanks for bringing back the memory
I loved this movie and always thought they should have done The Shadow like that. The techniques that Ken used once he went into ninja mode amongst the tangos was perfect moving amongst them like a shadow.
Remember watching the movie as a kid, almost forgot about it, thanks for sharing.
It seems even more authentic than the japanese ninja movies ;)
The caucacity
"Do not thank me! Just do your job!"
I'd leave out the first part altogether and just use the second part.
I remember watching this movie back in the day. Good times.
I liked this movie and hoped that they would make a TV series out of it.
This was the movie that introduced me to the Ninja. I watched it on TV when it first aired. It began my infatuation with the ninja. I have often said this was the most authentic depiction of the ninja on film. I eventually ended up training in Ninjutsu and moved across the country to study under Robert Bussey.
What was it like studying under Robert Bussey? How long did you train with him and what rank did you achieve?
@brankofunda3231 I trained with him for about 20 years. I earned my Black Belt Instructor Status in 1995. Eventually, I earned my instructor Chieftain Status, which is 3 levels higher.
I saw all the ninja movies in the 80s, saw all the ninja shows --- remember the CHIPS spinoff, FORCE SEVEN, and read all the ninja books like Eric Van Lustbader's THE NINJA. THE LAST NINJA I remember because I thought it'd make a great series.
oh my god finally thnx i found the ninja movie i watch back then without knowing the title 👍🏻
I loved this one because it was more grounded in reality, at least to a degree. 🥷
I remember watching it. There was a line where the father is training him as a kid and the kid is hanging from something. Father says if you let go I will beat you with a stick. I have worked that line into things over the years but no one has ever caught on to it.
It's a great TV movie, and one of the more realistic depictions of how shinobi arts would be used in that type of situation. Bought the DVD on ebay a few years ago. It would have been cool if it became an on-going series, maybe a new TV movie every year.
The Ninja is The Warrior, who in his secret mission comes out to play.
I have this on DVD, well worth the watch.
In The Master, the flashy chaos was simply the culmination of things.
Anyone remember the TV show “THE MASTER”?
This is very true and one of my favorites of all the ninja movies. And to think it was made for TV.
I am still a big fan of Sho Kosugi and met him one time but this movie is the most accurate. A real ninja never wants to fight, he would rather use stealth to accomplish his missions. But he will fight and kill if he has to. I have studied this art since I was a young teenager and started training in it and going to different Ninjutsu schools later on in my thirties because there were not many ninja schools in California before the year 2000. Before that though I had met some people here and there while I was training in other martial arts who had trained in Ninjutsu/Ninpo and they would show me some things and taught me a few techniques. And I would say this film is the most authentic and comes closest to the real thing. The ninja is subtle, not explosive. And the less fighting you do the closer you are to being an actual ninja. James Loriega student of the late Ronald Duncan said these things. And I would have to agree with those statements 100 %
My favorite Ninja movie of all time.
Why in Gods name this isnt released on blu ray by now after all these years is infuriating.
I remember watching this here in the uk in the early hours on Central tv back in 1987 and have never ever forgotten it
It should have gone to a full series
White Phantom was my favorite Ninja movie.
The Hunted (1995) is a great ninja film. Grounded. Showcasing real martial arts. And incorporation of Samuri culture. All filmed in Japan.
Easily the most authentic ninja movie by far. From my interest martial arts at the time and what I had learned from various sources. Yes.
My favorite ninja movie by far. It had action, fact and information blended into an martial arts action drama. Classic.
They should be more movies like this.
The twist ending using the mask was also in Mission Impossible tv series and films.
I was blown away during a movie scene at the time. While during practice. He spins on a swinging chain rope and throws a shuriken hitting a moving loop on a chain, stopping it. This was a movie, but at the time. Wow!.
FYI I believe one of the main advisors for this movie was Mike Stone who is also in the movie as a terrorist.
Oh yes. I loved this tv made for movie. It would have been a nice little action series.
If only.
I’ve always thought the same about this movie.
Needed a different lead.
Ninja Vengeance
This movie looks interesting. Although I love the Cannon classic, American Ninja, with Michael Dudikoff, it's good to see there was an actual movie made about ninjas that are more realistic than all the Hollywood stylized entertainment.
Also, the way he moves in darkness and stealth so ninjutsu and give me some of that Batman vibes I think Batman Arkham Asylum games were inspired by it
OKay NOW I know what weird ninja movie I saw on TV playing once. I only saw the part where they were balancing on a rope or something and I remember the voice being amplified and scary. I can finally rest!
I really liked this film. It's well written.
Never saw this movie. But my favorite ninja movies are Revenge of the Ninja, American Ninja series of movies, Ninja Assassin and dilogy of Ninja movies with Scott Adkins in main role. The best of them for me personally is the American Ninja movies, simply because I grew up watching them.
That tv show was why i became a Ninja tv show warcher😎
I forgot about this ninja movie 👍🏼🍿
It was a good movie. There were a couple odds and ends that were a little far out, but in the end it was reasonably accurate.
1:45 that is mike stone, pricilla presleys' karate instructor and lover
Definitely Mike Stone. Great full contact fighter and stuntman!
It’s Swan from the Warriors!! He used his ninja skills to throw that knife at the end scene.
Best ninja movie ever!
Saw ot when i was a kid and ot was great
So I like to watch The Warriors back to back with The Last Ninja. Swan, Michael Beck's character, talks about taking off at the end of The Warriors, & I Iook at The Last Ninja as a kind of sequel, where Swan leaves NY for CA, & becomes a Ninja out there. Obviously, he has a different origin story in The Last Ninja, but I like to think of it as a sequel. & The Last Ninja is probably more accurate to authentic ninjutsu, than most other ninja movies. Revenge of the Ninja is my favorite Ninja movie though.
I remember that tv show it was good with the ninja craze in the 1980’s
Looks very cool
Recognized Mike Stone & Pat Johnson.... 💯🤙🏽😎
I love the American ninja movies growing up
I have to check it out, I never seen this one. But just looking at him..... I keep waiting for Ajax and the rest of the Warriors to show up lol
This sounds like it would make for a great video game too.
Ninja Assassin was pretty good as well
There were many ninja TV shows the master on NBC raven CBS sidekicks not a ninja show but close ABC there was another one on ABC but I can't remember the name but it only showed one season if any. &I remember this one last ninja very excited when it aired.
Awesome review and commentary
The whole movie (The Last Ninja) was on RUclips not too long ago but the took it down.
Do you have a copy link?
I’d even be willing to buy a digital copy but can’t find it anywhere 😢
Swan from the warriors !!😊
i'd love to see your take on the Raven series on TV starring Geoffrey Meek.
I wonder if the guys at Tecmo took some inspiration from this when making Ninja Gaiden. The ninja here is an art dealer; just how Ryu is an antique dealer by day in the games.
2:03 ish,,, reminds me of "Person of Interest",,,,,,
I think I remember this one. Didn't. It have a flashback of his childhood when the Japanese adoptive dad through in a tub of water as a infant saying time to learn how to swim? Hahaha
I saw this movie and YES it had that scene!!!
I remember this but I never knew that was Swan?
Wasn't this the pilot for a tv series?
This and the Octagon (Chuck Norris) are the most authentic ninja movies ever.
The Octagon was not that accurate- it had Ninja’s using Sai and Nunchaku, which are Okinawan Kobudo weapons- they were never used by Japanese Historical Ninja….
I thought this was a TV series not a movie. I remember another series with 2 Americans as ninja
"The master" with Lee van Cliff as the ninja master!
@@noelhernandez363 That one focused less on the espionage and assassination elements and more on the fight-to-survive elements. But it also made clear that throwing stars needed to be treated with the utmost of respect.
Swan's tha man
Where can I see this movie?
I used to dream about getting taken under the wing of a japanese martial arts master.
Then I started studying under one and realized that it's important to check whether he's a psychotic adhd sadist or not. Learn by my mistake people, If your sensei behaves more like Kreese than Miyagi then back away people. 😂
I did learn how to love full contact though. Helped later on.
Where can you watch this movie?
🤔 did i finish this movie
Looked like one of the bad guys was Mike Stone.
Yes it is him
Is that guy from Warriors?
And Xanadu.
Swan from the warriors!
Is there anywhere to watch it online?
How Ninja dinner 3 should be done.... Even if I understand the 80s struggle appeal then..
Sad no one wants to make martial arts films today... American studies..
Love to see a high quality realistic portrayal dinner today,.. Just don't have the people
I don't know what side but ninja assaian is nice
Nope. Michael Dudikoff would kick this dude's ass.
Good movie but he’s no Sho Kosugi
No! The most authentic ninja movie was Ninja Champion!
Like batman
Swan
It's so fun and excellent, but the only truly authentic Ninjutsu film of modern day practitioners in situations that play out as REAL, is Ninja Vengeance, starring Stephen K. Hayes and other old friends of mine. It's a terrible film, by the way, but it IS authentic. It was made by students.
They should put it up for free on RUclips
The overly loud and repeating generic action score is unnecessary and obnoxious
Can't beat American Ninja. lol.
Fake fake fake Never heard of this I was deeply into the ninja movies I can tell that you used other movies to make this one of them for sure is Revenge of the Ninja
Hahahaha...ninja fantasy, and ninja trash movies...
Sometimes you gotta be a warrior and other times a ninja 😉
Now I gotta find this ^^ n watch it!!!!!! 🥷
