Larry Spencer was the "creative consultant" and one of the writers on "The Gong Show". He appeared on BOTH the Monday through Friday NBC daytime version and the weekly syndicated version. He once referred to "The Gong Show" as "a cuckoo's nest without walls!"
I did this bit in a sketch in high school. Everyone in the audience was a Gong Show fan and really got into it. It was a lot of fun. I was followed by my buddy doing Gene Gene the Dancing Machine and he stole the show.
I remember this guy! I remember him coming out singing "I'm gonna play my clarinet!" one time, and "I'm gonna play my xylo!" another time... and he never actually played any of them. Cracked me up! :-)
Yeah, in the case of the clarinet, he would build the clarinet while the judges/audience would sing along as in this sketch. I do not think he got gonged, but rather disqualified by the host for building it instead of playing it. Funny stuff.
Back in the 1970s, it was so much fun to come home from school and watch the Gong Show. I never missed an episode.
or to occasionally skip school and wait for it

I remember "I'm gonna play my tuba".
He also came out with a drum and, of course, the first time he hit it, it broke.
I'm gonna play my snake flute.
Herbal Tea Bag
Larry used the old Victor Borge style of playing his instruments, if you can remember that far back.
I watched this when I was in labor with my first child!
I loved the GOng SHow, but could never get over the fact that the MC always looked like he was drooling....
My favorite is the comb and tissue paper
What a bunch oh hairy dog stories. Excellent!
I loked when he played the herbal tea bag and the shoe.
Loved Larry!
If this guy was in a lifeboat on the open ocean the other passengers would throw him overboard, even if there was plenty of food and water.
He once tried to play his "magic" French horn if I remember correctly.
Poor Gene Gene.
And they didn't gong this guy?
Well, he tried playing it. Didn't work.
Whatrya gonna do?!!
