  • Previously I installed a single Thermoworks Billows fan on the Char-griller 980 gravity fed charcoal grill. I control it with the Thermoworks signals. It was good up to about 300 degrees, but not quite enough air to hold higher temps. After talking it over with Thermoworks customer service, they recommended a second fan. I had to put some effort into sealing up the 980 with lava-lock, but the results were awesome! The 980 is now better than ever. I use B&B lump charcoal pretty exclusively.

Hi Robert - thanks for the kind words! I've ended up using the signals on so many other things - my Weber BBQ, my oven and even used it to check my in-law's fridge over the weekend... I just plug the signals unit into the fans and power each time I use it, then pull it off when I'm done. It's super simple and honestly takes about 30 seconds to plug in. Winters are awful cold in my neck of the woods - temps below 0 aren't unusual. I don't think the signals unit would survive outside, so it's probably better stored inside anyway. It will be interesting to see if the billows fans survive the winter. If I come up with a good plan for a rain shield for the fans I'll definitely post it. Thanks for checking out the video!

Thanks! Seems to be working pretty well so far! Definitely milk all you can get out of the stock setup.

When I received mine from Lowe’s I had the same issue, almost seemed to struggle getting up over 400 and holding it. After looking it over really good found out the fine assemblers at Lowe’s put the charcoal hopper in backwards. My fault as well for not noticing that but after putting it in the right way it worked great. Good video though!

That's actually surprisingly common. I've lost track of the number of folks I've talked to that have experienced that. It seems to be a thing for Lowes. Glad you sorted it out!

Great vid. Was having the burned up flat problem. I went through 4 flaps and then purchased the LSS fan mod like you have. No problems since then. I know what you mean about the app. It seems like Char-Griller could hire a tech company to iron out all the bugs in it.

Thanks Darby! Great call on th LSS mod. I really think that's the best upgrade you can get. I love the 980, but it sure needs a couple tweaks.

Add a piece of foil on the hopper lid.
Also a piece in the blade opening. Lava tape on all opening, including the door for the fan box

It's all lava'd up. I show it at 5:40. Foil on the hopper lid since day one. Certainly makes a huge dif!

Wish there was a cheaper alternative.

Check out the Fireboard 2 Drive. It will run the stock fan. Petty sweet option.
