Porsche 993 - Belts, fan, alternator replacement

- This video is a doozie. It started out as just replacing the belts but turned into replacing the fan bearing, then identifying stress fractures in the fan and having to replace that. To make sure the alternator wasn’t part of the problem, we had that looked at and that resulted in a rebuild. A few weeks for parts and alternator rebuild and we’re in for almost $1,000….. ouch
Very nice video! I am trying to put mine back together now.
By far the best instructions to access belts. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words!
I just got finished doing the fan replacement and alternator removal and am ready to put the belts back on. Nice clear instructions that I'm sure will make my day go much better. Thanks for posting.
I’m glad it could be helpful
Your videos are awesome! Will come in very handy for maintenance on my 993. Thank you for posting these.
Thanks for tuning in!
Excellent! I look forward to going through your other videos. Good stuff!
I hope they’re helpful to you!
Thank you so much for this video!!! I learned a lot !! Thank you!!
Very good video except for the missing parts but that's okay it's not easy to put this all together with the camera in the right places during the wrenching. One thing I noticed is when driving the three bolts for the first belt pulley it is important to crank the engine so the belt runs up the pulley so you can tighten the three bolts every time you do this, my experience was that I'd have to do this about three times before I could tighten the bolts all the way. I bet you of you take the last two belts with the pulleys off you'll notice the three bolts to be loose. At least you won't loose them ;)
👍That cranking detail is not shown on some other videos with the engine on you find out when u do it my outer pulley needed that
dude im tearing my hair out, i cannot for the life of me install the alternator belt (outter belt). every time i start torqueing the 24mm nut the outter pulley half will cock it self at an angle, will not stay flush with the outter leveling spacer/washer. belt is the correct size 760mm, i even have a 763mm belt. the 760mm is a porsche belt too. The inner belt went on very easily, cant figure out why this one is giving me trouble
I just went back and watched my video again to jog memory but I don’t remember anything weird with installing the outer belt. It went on pretty loose and by the time I pulled out the torque wrench it was already snug.
@@beardedgarage hey thanks for replying. i was able to resolve my issue, but with a larger belt. i ended up having to use a 775mm belt (basically the same as inner belt). i used 3 shims and what do ya know.. it worked with good tension roughly 1/4" deflection with finger at mid point. I have NO IDEA why the standard 760 or 763 will not work, not even close honestly. The smaller belts were biting hard against the flat surface where the shims are, causing the outter pulley half to pivot at an angle. The original 763 belt that came off the car had good tension but get this, it was missing nearly 1/3rd the teeth (increasing the inside diameter nearly 1/4" or more..) so that 763 belt originally must have been VERY tight. absolutely bizzare.
Can the fan be removed with the motor still in the car?
Yeah I'm interested to know that too.
My guess is yes, and I've heard guys trying it, but I've never done it myself. The problem I see is the room needed to work. Obviously my situation was easy because I had the engine on a stand ;)
@@beardedgarage anyone still reading the comments and wondering, then the answer is yes, it can - quite tight but it just slips out.
I was changing my alternator belt(piece of cake i said) and had a lapsus brutus and actually tightened till the M10 adaptor broke&the head is inside...u happen to know if the star threads go deep?? Trying a few things to get the broken head out not much space but was thinking worst case if deep enough can i just push it in and b done
Great question. If I remember correctly those threads aren’t super deep
Thx ...I was afraid of that..it'll b fun to tell about it after I work it out
@@MyCS-ec7vv let me know how it works out
Sure I'll add a video of my belt changing with my misadventures
@beardedgarage got the broken tip of the adaptor with a strong magnet...that was easy. My fan has some cracks(olriginal97)got a new fan but it scrapes the housing si I need a new housing of is there some trick? can the blades be sanded?
What manufacturer , make/ model is the torque wrench you are using. Thanks
That particular one is a precision instruments torque wrench. I bought that a bunch of years ago when precision instruments still had the contract for making snap on torque wrenches. Personally I own a bunch of different brands/models/sizes
Thank you. Excellent instruction video
If only you could show how to repair or service a 993 Targa roof...
Bring it over, we’ll figure it out ;)
@@beardedgarage I would if I could, but I'm in SoCal...
Sorry, but this could have been a great video if you didn't skip showing many critical steps such as the alternator removal, fan and bearing removal, etc.
I honestly appreciate the feedback. We filmed the alternator removal, the bearing removal, etc. but unfortunately the camera ran out of memory during the filming and just stopped. We didn't notice until afterwards.
@@beardedgarage .. "Best laid plans"... "You get what you get and don't throw a fit".
Great DIY video for the 993 3.6l .... Thank you!
