@@Steve_Kelly_Oak but why do the damn S&S have to cost so damn much? Lol. It's a better deal to find a low milage in a 7k bike than it is to buy a new one. Ultimas are great buys though, everyone that I've known just says the break in is crucial with them. When a friend let me ride his bike with a 113 and I got off my bike with a stock 80" and hopped on his and took off..... I think I stained his seat.

The companies that dare like honda and toyota know they can keep long time customers for life! For some crazy reason HD doesn't use the same method! But rather focus on HD wardrobes and clothing lines! Its all about the fashion baby! Nevermind the quality of the motor and so forth! Fuggedaboutit! Just my 2cents! Peace chicken grease!

Harleys are built in Brazil, India and most recently Thailand. Back in the 1980s when HD sold their soul for money to AMF bikers wore their patch upside down.
      To no effect.
Back in the day if someone wanted to buy a fake Haley they bought a Hinda, today if you want to buy a fake Honda you guy a Harley.

The Evo in my 1996 Road King blew a hole thru the rear piston last summer, so I bought the 113" and it's been a dream to ride. Shakes a good bit at idle, but cruisin is nice & smooth. Gobs of grunt all day long, from off the line to 90mph on the interstate. I wanted the 120" but they weren't available for quite a while from Jireh (at that time) and it seemed the 113" was the best bang for the buck. Absolutely happy with my engine. We'll see how long it lasts, though. I'm only up to 1700 miles on it so far.

I don't want a bigger motor. I don't want more power. If I did I'd get a V Max or a Triumph Rocket III. I want a kick back and relax motor that will last past 100,000 miles.

Big inch evos run hot. I ran a 117 inch and a 107 in baggers but quite frankly the heat never bothered me😀. It’s the nature of the beast. That power rush that you get when you twist the throttle on a big inch Harley dosent come cheap. Like the old saying goes “ if you want to play you have to pay “ On Harley’s that playtime dosent come cheap .A 4 inch piston generates a lot of heat and there’s no way around it. I agree you with 100 percent about running a smaller cam. Less stress on the valve train, less noise . I learned that from replacing a set of lifters in one summer. That and only getting 5 thousand miles to the rear tire when a 80 inch you should get 8- 10 thousand miles. Once you start running a big inch motor it’s hard to go back to a 80 . I love Mukuni carburetors, they work really well. Thanks for the rundown on the 120. Does Ultima run compression releases on they’re engines?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  2 года назад +2

yes they do, you can see them in the video. horsepower makes heat and that is just how it is. that is why the fins are way bigger on this motor. the next thing is that a small motor has to work way harder than a bigger motor so the big motor can run cooler than a higher reving smaller motor.

@@TatroMachine I talked to this engine builder that had been working on Harley’s since the late 60s back in the early 90s before the big inch craze caught on. I was putting a 117 inch together that I bought from Merch Performance. He told me the problem with big inch Harley’s is they are heat monsters. He said a 4 inch piston with no water jacket around it is going to run hot and there’s nothing to do about it. He told me if Harley was to put liquid cooling around it you would have a monster because you could have tighter tolerances. He told me that’s what they are trying to do with the twin cams. Bring the valve angles in,more rigid valve geometry more power. My last big inch motor was a 107 Merch . I bought the long block and had to put everything else on it. I loved that engine. I had it in a bagger and I couldn’t wait to ride it everyday. I went through a few lifters and a rear tire 😄but it was worth it. I had a friend in the late 90s that had a little Harley repair shop. He bought 124 Ultima. He only had it for about 2 months and it blew a head gasket I think. It’s been a long time but I do remember him gladly sending it back for warranty, he said 124 was 👍.

@John punch I can't answer all of your questions but I can tell you that they DON'T like advanced timing AT ALL! My motor came with no dip switches for VOES adjustment whatsoever (Ultima ignition 53-645) and was factory-set. I think Ultima finally figured out that was wreaking havoc on their motors and has been eliminated it in its entirety from their big bore motors. My instructions clearly said "Warranty voided if VOES is used". Personally I wouldn't run a VOES in it since it seems to be the culprit for engine failure. I don't know what the supplied modules advance rate actually is but it does have a diode on it to indicate that its advancing but to what degree i don't know... I'd be curious myself. If it does its very minute as compared to a regular HD curve. Sorry if I couldn't help you, thought I'd share what I've learned thus far with mine. If you go to my RUclips channel you can see a short walk around of my 94 Fatboy that I've dubbed "Sarah".

The "Smaller & Milder" cam offered by Ultima which gets used in their 100" & 107" motors is Part Number 117-246 (MW248) and has a .600"/.580" lift, duration 248/252, lobe centerline 106/108, overlap 36°, lift @ TDC .181/.121 Lobe separation angle 107°
I prefer the 4.00" bore over the 4.250" due to our town's master engine builder blowing multiple head gaskets. The 113" is a 4.00" bore and gives more gasket sealing surface and won't be prone for blowing head gaskets. This guy rides his shit and therefore I trust that he knows best.
    Just my 2 cents...
I ordered a 113" today and will be swapping out the Ultima lifters with S&S ones (Part Number 33-5352) and will be swapping out the factory Ultima Roller rocker arms with Genuine HD ones and tossing out the breather and replacing it with the S&S reed breather. My carburetor of choice will be a CV44 and will bolt on to my factory airbox to give it that "stock"

sounds like a plan. if a head gasket and matching parts are made correctly you only need 1-/8" of surface width for the gasket to seal on. i have run as low as 1/32" on my race bikes but that is pushing it hard.

@Tatro Machine he had his heads and mating surface on the top of his cylinders seal ring grooved by Justin (formerly of S&S) and is going to be running a steel ring for a head gasket. What a pain in the ass, like I said I personally feel that 4.250" is just too close for comfort and doesn't have a lot of surface area along the mating surfaces.

I want to know why so many times I have heard about problems with Ultima. I can understand lessoning duration and lift to lessen the abuse, but I would still prefer plenty of duration and a little less lift like a old school solid flat tappet small block chevy. Yes it's not going to make the most power under the curve, but it is less aggressive, still having good mid to top end. Would that live in the Ultima Evo motor

In your opinion which combination is better? Undersquare oversquare or square bore and stroke on harley style engines

its very simple. good head flow likes big bores and bad flowing heads like stroke. harley heads suck.

Ive owned 3 evo motors and its true how reliable they are, about as powerful as a brigs and stratton in my craftsman riding lawn mower. Sorry, that was rude of me.... to the brigs and Stratton fans out there, fully aware of the 1989 Ohio lawn mower race that left a harley evo powered Murry in the clippings.😂

just because you can't make a harley motor run good does not mean others can not.
