@@ZOMBIELANDakaUSA yeah, man.. nobody is born with the gift to play well any instrument.. It needs practice! Except in the case of some syndroms (like Tourette's), in which patients have some changes in the brain, giving them a super-human hearing and playing.. Or in people who are born with absolute pitch.
No +Tyler Saunders, unfortunately i never saw him live! But i've seen Steve Vai, and he was very impressive, i remember his perfect playing... whitout missing one single note... fortunately there are guitar players of that caliber, But i don't think they're completely humans.. don't you? :)
He’s definitely in the top tier of players. There are many players I think are just as good though. I wouldn’t call them better or worse than one another.
When he plays, I find myself sitting on the edge of my chair, watching and listening as the ideas just flow out of him. Just one brilliant phrase after another. And Guthrie makes it look effortless. I think I'm gonna go hack off my fingers now!
This is AMAZING!!! and it just goes to show that buying expensive gear won't help you get a better sound for your self, he goes from suhr to strat to 335 to les paul and keeps that unmistakable "guthrie" sound throughout !!!
In this video the tone is similar because of the axe fx that makes the guitar sound kinda the same as any other... But in other videos you can hear tonal differences, but Guthrie's playing still the same
For me, if we just talk about improvisation, he's the greatest of all time by far ! He can play any style of music, Blues, Pop, Bossa, Jazz (Bebop, Hardbop, Free, Fusion, Swing etc...), Funk, Rock, Metal. His skills are ......., i think that we don't have words for describe it yet. His feelings are wonderful, the diversity of his licks, his colors !
***** pretty sure that the tabs are written after he peformed the solos, and the tabs are just his improv written down. When they do these sessions they take multiple recordings of each backing track, and then takes out the best improvisation, then write the tabs down
+SevenStringShredHead You nailed it! Pure improv on Guthrie's part here. Usually the backing tracks are named first before Guthrie even plays on them. Sometime the names are added after we have a finished recording. The TAB/Notation is always a transcription of the solo, our resident transcriber receives the finished recording, works his wizardry and then sends us back the transcription of the solo. Hope that helps!
Literally every time I hear Guthrie play I get chills! and when I watch him i'm in awe every time! I personally think he is the master. IF one day I can play as half as good as he is...then my life would be complete!
He one of THE most POTENT voices on guitar today... up there with Holdsworth and Johhny McLaughlin.. such expressive playing in so many styles! And the cat is drop dead funny!
+René J Simonpietri couldnt agree more! in the strat too he sounds really nice! at the end, i think its just have to bem onde guitar without the lever and not scaloped. hehe
Am I the only one in love with the lick from 0:36 to 0:39 (I think it's funny that it's only 3 seconds, but there must've been a hundred notes played). It just sounds so awesome to me, and so bluesy.
Yeah... What about this one at 1:03... Made me sick. Great feeling and placement, notes are chosen wisely, even if most people will say "Kay man he plays 3 modes at 200 bpm and it's fine"... Really amazing.
DCee picking takes away the fluency of the lick. It's not more impressive than legato. Both have different things that make them hard to execute at high level. I find picking easier than legato since it's easier to keep time, volume and cleansiness than with legato. All you need with alternate picking is good synchronisation between your right and left hands. Besides, it's not technique that is supposed to impress you, it's the note choice and the musicality of the lick. Beautifully done by mr. Govan here!
I don't think that's at all due to the overuse of legato. If you look at 'waves' on the aristocrats-dvd vs the live in London 2008 version, I would argue that the aristocrats-version is a lot less inspired whilst he's picking a lot more in that version. Alan Holdsworth probably picks once a week, but although I don't like his music I can't deny that he's a very expressive player. Meanwhile Paul Gilbert or Conrad Simon, who are insane pickers, are not known for their emotional/expressive playing. It's about fluency vs machinegun-effect. That's where the difference in expression is in. Guthrie uses both to great effect. Not to say that alternate picking can't be expressive. Andy Timmons is very expressive and has an extremely good picking technique. But legato is not merely a way to 'cheat speed', but it's a way to sound more like a saxophone and add fluency rather than the scratchy effect Alternate picking has. Btw, I think I can play faster whilst picking than woth legato!
I agree with both of you, but like DCee I have to say I would much rather listen to something like 2:40 than legato. It just stops sounding like guitar to me if there is hardly any picking. I think GG is great though, he always sounds like he's _playing_, vs just random noodling, whether it's fast/slow, or legato/picking.
Hmm turn it up with good headphones/monitors, close your eyes and then see. I'll give you that the differences are subtler than if he was plugged into an amp, but they are all different - they just all sound good!
It really doesn't matter what guitar you give this guy does it? He's such a talented player! Amazing how he seems to play whatever comes to mind! Very lyrical style.
Govan is a wonderful guitarrist because he can use the most of guitar scales just in one song! , I admire guitar players that can play like this , following this line ! 😊🎶
Damn he makes every guitar sounds unique with his ability to adapt quickly and cross smoothly between different genre with ease. This is a true example of mastering your skills with perfect harmony between your mind body and guitar. Dont be a hater dont be jealous embrace it
Strangely enough, i'm not over keen on listening to Guthrie's music, but i do really like to watch him play. Whilst hearing him too, of course. But he is brilliant and a seemingly nice guy.
One of, if not 'the'(?), most versatile Guitarist/Musicians I've ever seen. He can play anything from Classical, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Heavy Metal, even Death Metal, and many more styles without any effort. Most Guitarists spend their entire life trying to master one, two, maybe three of those styles and still not get it right. Incredibly gifted! Just a quick mention, he doesn't use the Fractal System as he's using in this video. He uses Victory Amplifiers.
feel it,combinded w his style, makes for great music, slows down at changes and modulations, bends up and down, does the vai slide, articulates where needed
looks like a wrist sweatband. anything elastic and covered in fabric will work to muffle the tones above the nut (and before the tuners). during legato licks or tapping or anything else that's harder to mute the other strings properly, sliding it up past the first fret will take care of the muting for you.
it was fantastic, Guthrie played phenomenal. I focussed myself on his fingers and they moved so fast! But he plays not only fast, he plays also very smooth! When you have the opportunity to see Steven Wilson live together with his amazing band then you should....He also has a facebookpage.
basically its an amp, effects, mic, cabinet modular. It can recreates your favorite amps, effects, mics, cabinet options and you can tweak it your desire. I am getting an Axe Fx 2 and i sold my amp for it. It really is amazing
That Fractal Audio processor sounds really good. Its reacting really well to all of Guthrie's tricks. Most of those types of units are great di'd directly into desks and protools in the studio but don't sound that good live. That thing is awesome sounding.

If I'd spent as much time practicing as I have watching this video, I'd probably be a lot better by now.
maybe not when you got it, you got it
Its not this easy to just stop watch guthrie play
You might even be as good as me by now, but I doubt it .
It's not gift it's ear and practice and a lot of passion and love, Mister Govan you are the definition of my dream
Listening to Guthrie play is like watching Picasso paint or Michael Jordan play basketball. Truly one of the best musical geniuses of our time!
The first one drove me INSANE! Killer tone, unlimited licks, crazy bends, great rhythm.. AWESOME!
Sounds great. Love the Fractal and your playing even better Guthrie. Bravo.
Guthrie is one of the most talented guitarists ever. He's simply a joy to listen to!
