The irony is that he doesn't play "licks". He plays what he hears in his head. Thats why it sounds so organic and smooth, and not like a bunch of premeditated licks weakly strung together.
Guthrie is amazing. Not just also technically gifted and with excellent taste, but he feels the spirit of the guitar (He gets jazzier with a 335, more bluesy with a strat, etc.). Like every guitar he picks up suggests a path to follow, and he totally nails it.
@@quiltface83was lucky enough to see him play live in London at an Aristocrats gig. Was truly mind bending watching him play. He’s just so so so good. Not seen his like since Shawn Lane
The mark of a truly great guitarist is when everything they play is interesting. Guthrie Govan can take a series of backing tracks with extremely basic chord progressions and record one of the tastiest guitar instrumental albums ever on the first take. That's talent, right there.
Guthrie's note bending is beyond soulful. His playing is technically perfect, but with total feel and lyricism. My neck automatically torques when he bends with such meaning.
He is a person who understands the laws of nature according to Buddhism. He learns music just like we all learn languages. Freedom + love + passion + discipline is key here. He also travels to expand his musical ideas. His parents must have understood life for which we should be grateful because the music in the family inspired him to study music. So now we have Guthrie, guitar’s God We can all be gods! By understanding yourself and consciousness.
The best!!.. the 1:13 to 1:17 mark fills me with such melancholy.. this guy deserves to be recognized world wide and not just in the rock/metal community
It's so hard for me to get perfect note placement playing that fast. Guthrie does it the best. Every single note is where it's supposed to be. What a pure talent.
One example is the instrumental Babylon Joe Bonamassa Steve Vai Zakk Wylde say he is one of the top guitarist in history.Plus aint dead yet or his best solo video are prime example of how incredible he is.
i have seen the best live from the mid 1960s and have had the honour to meet some of them Blackmore Satriani EricJohnson Leslie West.I play guitar also for 53 years i have some understanding of playing as a musician all are great in their own style. yes i totally agree with you about Guthrie but Marino did various styles also before any other musicians before him and that was Since he was 17 years old when he cut his first record but that is just my opinion I believe Frank and Jimi were the best But i understand your opinion 100 percent everyone has their Favourites That is what makes conversation about these gifted musicians interesting we all can enjoy.Thank you. Ron Oshawa Canada
+Charles Christopher And all these vids show that you don't have to buy HIS guitar $$$ He is using many different brands/styles of guitar and doing whatever he wants to on the fingerboard and getting killer tones will all the types of pick up configurations, humbuckers or single coil regardless. $aves me a lot of money. Now I don''t have to run out and buy a Charvel Govan guitar. (I can still suck on all my guitars that I already own).
+Charles Christopher Everyone that seriously follows Guthries career since 2009 knows that he s No Shredder. He can play EVERY Style: Heavy Metal, Blues, Fusion Jazz, Old School 1950 ies Jazz. Hard Rock
love this guys playing. He's no shredder, but he can shred if he wants to. He just has too much soul and melody to ever be considered just a shredder. Guthrie has awoken a need for me to play the guitar more than I have for a long time. When I hear him I feel the same way I did when I first heard guys like Blackmore, Rhodes, EVH, Hendrix etc...nearly 35 years ago.
It is the great players that inspire us to play. What gets me about Guthrie is he isn't stuck on 1 style of playing. Like this clip, even though he isn't "shredding" here, try doing some of those string bends and to get the whole thing to sound right is a bitch, but it sure sounds great
So how come comments are turned off for "Time to Let Her Go" from the same session? Too many people commenting "He must have just found out she was pregnant"? Or then it may have been "He must have just found out about her other men." That's probably it.
As much as it pains me, and for the grief that I know is to come, I think he might be that guy ? I know there are lots of people out there that will say I'm crazy, but he might just be that dude you know ? I know everyone has their favorite, but from what I've seen so far, that's including watching him, Via, and Satch onstage at the same time, and IMOP I think he clearly outranked those guys,(AND THAT'S SAYING A LITTLE MORE THAN A MOUTHFUL).
awesome playing. Tone, licks and speed all there. Along with Tom Quayle probably the best guitarist to emerge in last 10-15 years. Mention also to Rick Graham.
what I love about Guthrie is his laid back approach to techniques which us humble guitarists aspire to and will never accomplish cos a,we haven't got the talent b, the unbelievable time taken practicing to achieve this standard of playing.Still very inspiring nevertheless.
He is a living dictionary of guitar licks.
I cant comprehend. I just hear.
The irony is that he doesn't play "licks". He plays what he hears in his head. Thats why it sounds so organic and smooth, and not like a bunch of premeditated licks weakly strung together.
under the "boring, uncreative" section of the dictionary. Y A W N

hardly. 300 other guitarists have more musicality than this dude

Guthrie's playing is incredible. There really are not enough superlatives. Thanks!
The melodic control and phrasing is just on a utterly ridiculous level.
Even He looks amazed by what he can do at times. Play on, Mr. Govan!

Yes, his Charvel is my dream axe
He surely is the best we have seen from the last two decades. Hands down.
He is.
I can literally sit and watch/listen too Guthrie play all day. One of the wonders of this world.
The only hitech guitar player who can play the blues with a sense. And the most versatile guitar player ever.
B.c. totally agree.I once read in an interview were he described himself as a blues guitarist that got distracted.
@@frannyp46 Hahah that totally sounds like a Guthrie remark!
he is the best "shredding + melodic" guitarist
Literally every lick he plays you'v never seen before, so guthrie, incredible.
Mr Govan is one of the best guitar players out there!
Truly brilliant guitarist, superb, fluid, smooth, fast, while still creating beautiful, melodic express. Awesome!
Wonderful melodic solo ♫♪
1:32 woah I loved that dissonance phasing in and out during the gradual bend
true that! :)
Funny how he can play ‘sloppy’ here giving it an authentic blues sound but can turn around and play on the beat perfectly at over 200 bpm too
Just got an attack of spinal chills listening to this. I gotta go play. Always inspires. Thank God for Guthrie Govan!
Whenever my day needs a lift, I play this and it puts smile on my face. :)
A lot of Soul in that playing, along with many Jeff Beck' inflections ... but without even using the floating bridge !
The best!!.. the 1:13 to 1:17 mark fills me with such melancholy.. this guy deserves to be recognized world wide and not just in the rock/metal community
The first 3 notes are just perfect and lead the way to the tone and inspiration for the entire song. This guy is mindblowing
This man uses fingers to change tone and groupings and rests so well at will.
He is the Messi of Guitar
This biblically brilliant! The notes are just so beautiful.
So smooth with those bends, sounds like he's playing slide at times.

So good he just made my speakers put on sunglasses and take up smoking. Love Guthrie!
Truly great guitarist. Also excellent song writer, creative musician.
One of my favorite things I've heard him play.
Melts my face every time I hear him.

Finally. A highway where I don't mind being stuck in traffic at all.
Amazing rock guitar. Sounds of the open road on a hot day when you're happy and full of optimism.
Not many will live with him as far as improvising goes. He has every tool in his box.
