You have great taste for someone who's only just started playing, make sure to also listen to some Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Jason Becker if you haven't yet (though something tells me if you're already listening to Guthrie Govan you probably know most of them already). Example: give 10 proficient guitarists the notes to Eruption or the Mean Street (intro) they'll all be able to play it, some will play it well and others not so well. No one would suggest that he isn't technically brilliant, but I find I sympathize with those who are left cold by his music. I'm awed by his chops while simultaneously finding his music utterly forgettable. It's the same way I'm thrilled by a fast roller coaster only while on it and forget about it later, whereas I'm charmed by something simple like the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland which impresses a memory in my mind that will remain with me a lifetime and which I will forever remember with fondness. Those who are easily impressed with technical ability are unable to comprehend why everyone else doesn't share their enthusiasm, and it's a difficult thing to explain because aesthetic value is abstract and not subject to quantification or empirical analysis, which is why there's little point in debating the issue. It's easier to simply say "I like it" or "I don't care for it" and leave it at that.

    • @mackhomie6
      @mackhomie6 4 года назад

      I don't entirely disagree, but if all you hear in his playing is technical chops, you couldn't possibly be a guitarist. the subtleties he weaves throughout his music and control over the string(s)/pitch/harmony make for some incredibly beautiful playing that I'm not convinced you even hear. it sounds like you hear technical wankery + some filler in betwer a nd that's not a good assessment, subjective or otherwise

    Here’s my problem with calling this over technical and not emotional-it seems like if a fast guitar solo is played clean, people start saying there’s no emotion. Like the Since I’ve Been Loving You solo has jimmy page playing as fast as he can for a lot of it (not as clean as Guthrie though-not trying to roast page it’s just different eras) and you’d be crazy to say that solo has no emotion. Where the similarity lies is that the notes that are longer are given more importance and Guthrie and page both target those ones and really make them fucking sing. The fast sections give contrast to those moments and make them even more fucking epic than they would be otherwise while at the same time having their own emotional quality-the fast sections build tension so that those moments (usually it’s those big ass bends lmao) have as much impact as possible. You can find emotional value in every part of a good solo like this; you just can’t get caught up on how technically proficient someone is. Maybe that’s the real problem with playing fast and clean-people get caught up on your technical ability and can’t look past it to find your message. It’s there though... trust me.

    • @carolinepalmer5821
      @carolinepalmer5821 3 года назад +1

      I agree. I will admit I don’t get any emotion from this solo, nothing, no goosebumps and believe me, I get them a lot. All of you guys are forgetting the most important factor: tone. His guitar sounds clean through out the whole solo, like you said, I feel no struggle, no deep feelings, just clean notes. Also his guitar does note have a special tone that really helps create emotion.

      Most people who say this sort of stuff are elitest players who are nearly as talented or educated as the people they are commenting about. Even the dryest most technical playing conveys emotion imo. Just because some people are masters of it doesn't make other players playing any less emotional imo. Very well said.

Firstly Govan is without a doubt one of the most technically achieved guitarists of our time however in this performance he shreds a lot of technic brilliantly but the tune takes me nowhere if he could create a story like Gary Moore or David Gilmore to name but a few then he would reach the stardom he deserves. As stated Govan would reach a larger audience and world wide acclaim by toning it down sometimes and I’m sure a better appreciation of his unrivalled talent could be heard and accepted by so many more. Maybe I shouldn’t have used the word stardom because it hit your cord however as a veteran Musician myself I stand by my observation. Peace and love be with you.
