"I didn't say the story isn't cool, what I will say is: you couldn't pay me a million dollars to listen to the lore in a game where numbers go up" - Day[9] 2022
Thing with the lore is that in a character/league style game like this, where you do the campaign at least once every league, you end up knowing the jist of the lore anyway.
@@enlightendbel i have almost 10k hours in poe and only know bits and pieces
Truly his wisdom knows no bounds. May the funday monday be with you Krissam
@@enlightendbel What you mean knowing the gist, I don't remember anything and I've been playing since 2013
I to have no clue of the lore let alone the "story" been playing off and on since 2014 lol..... you literally start on a beach and kill stuff loll..
If you are a POE lover, getting someone else hooked on POE is the hypest, most adrenaline-rushing shit you can do.
It's amazing because your like a prophet to them for the next couple of years as you pass down your knowledge like a family heirloom
Selects a name on the first try that is not taken...
HE IS THE CHOSEN ONE!
1:16:43 "is dying bad" - well it really depends - cast on death builds is a thing in PoE...
man, this video is absolutely jam packed with legendary day9 moments. “YOU are way too excited for me to play this game” is a classic
"My mana's 51, NOT HIGH ENOUGH!"
me, looking down at my 48 unreserved mana
37 for me lol
Sean discovering there's no gold was glorious. It's one of the smartest bits of game design in poe.
No gold? As in no currency?
@@nharj7674 there's currency. The currency is materials you can use for crafting.
Like trading wood, wool etc in real life old age.
Why is it smart? All low level currency in PoE is fungible anyway. Like why would you want consumable town portals and scrolls of identity in this day and age.
It's really not.
Gold is just something else.
Chaos Orbs are the de facto currency in PoE, there's no fundamental difference between c and gold other than volume.
@@Draukagrissah There IS a fundamental difference that is you can use chaos orbs for crafting, and even moreso now when you have to use chaos orbs to roll modifiers on T17 maps (I know this wasn't the case when this video was recorded or whe nyou wrote your comment).
Been playing for a decade, and man it's such an awesome thing seeing a genuinely excited and open player approach the game practically completely fresh. I couldn't care less about the inefficiencies or 'mistakes' or whatever else, it's just so fun seeing you explore and learn the game!
The single most satisfying thing in poe is progressing, so making mistakes and "inefficient" or wrong decisions early just adds to that and is completely fine. Going into poe and immediately just following guides can really kill the feel of the game.
I very much disagree. Both logically and anecdotally the people I know who still enjoy this game used the vast wealth of information on this game to start. Going in blind is an absolute waste of time for a game this deep, unless you are milking it for an audience.
@@Waggabagaboo "Going in blind is an absolute waste of time ..."
Efficiency doesn't immediately equal fun. Yeah, eventually every player that sticks with the game is gonna hit a point where they will use their knowledge to do better and more or less min-max. That doesn't mean though that it's the best way/most fun to play from day 1.
By going after detailed guides from the get-go you'd be skipping any experiences you'd make from just playing the game and unveiling stuff by yourself, something that can leave far longer lasting and enjoyable impressions than just following a guide.
Same. Since open beta with a few leagues off that didn't land right for me. But it did bring a tear to my eye seeing him explore the passive tree and go "I can put jewels in this thing!?" and to think jewels were so ground breaking but that was like 3.0 which is... act 4 release. Such a long time ago now. Now we have clusters!
@@Waggabagaboo There's the notion of common sense that you put points into survivalbility first and that's really the only thing you need to know and even then, It's been like 6 years now where you can't brick your character anymore if you hadn't invested into survivalbility, who then would become stuck at level 55. Or actually being able to die to Hillock. You can literally do uber uber elder at level 20 without a single skill point invested, because the vast majority of encounters are completely skill based nowadays. Nearly everything is viable and you really don't have to pick some guide that's going to make you rely on inflated uniques at an inflated price. Path of Exile has been tailored to a casual audience over the 11 years I've been playing it now, and since Tencent had a majority stake things like gear roadblocks or dps checks have been removed nearly entirely. The help system is also really good, so you can go blind into the game because it doesn't really matter anymore. You are playing the casual version of PoE and you can't brick your character anymore since a few years, stop pretending that it is hard, because that's delusional and gatekeeping.
I've never watched this guy before, but I've played PoE for a decade. THIS IS COMEDY GOLD. Gawd this guy is funny.
"I've not seen marketing talk about just the game in 10 years"
And that's why PoE livestreams and FFXIV live letters are some of the only release announcements I watch every time
God I LOVE that your thought process when you discover "gems are basically FF7 materia" is EXACTLY what i went through when I started playing this game
Man, I've been playing PoE for so many years now, it's so nice to be able to relive my first time firing the game up vicariously. Easiest subscribe of my life.
Aaaah the White Iron Greaves of Superior Destiny! How could he just throw them away!
Edit: Damn it... he picked them up, my joke is dead, even though it was barely alive in the first place, I shall miss it.
believe it or not, it's actually a lot more "friendly", "simple" compared to when it first came out. the old saying was, "just mess up with your first char and don't bother to fix it, just re-roll".
"OH, I'm YOLKED, I'm ready to order from WENDY'S."
What does that even mean? XD
No one knows but it gets the people going
This is an excellent demonstration of just how a new player interacts with a complex system. Handling a new player experience at its best. He is even more advanced than the basic new player and has a horde of people chatting answers at him for the questions he has.
This was so much more enjoyable to watch than I expected. Would legit watch a 50-part series of Day9 playing PoE from nothing to endgame
I loved this so much. POE seems so chill watching Sean play though it slowly at his own pace. I think it will make me slow down and enjoy the game more. I feel like zooming makes the on death effects and interactions way harder.
Oh yeah, the game really has sped up over the years. I remember slogging my way through a bazzar map that was lvl 73 as old school Arctic Armor/MoM/etheral blade scion. Based on ziggys build. Pretty much immortal but took forever to kill shit. I miss that slower pace but with all the shit now a days you HAVE to keep moving or you die. Maybe PoE 2 will be diff, here's to hopinh!
@@Lazris59 It's actually why I left the game, and I miss it so damn much... But there are just too many mechanics, and the game is just boringly fast. I miss PoE 2.4-2.6. And actually also miss PoE closed beta where Piety was the absolute monster haha. The game was slow, and you really slugged through difficulty levels but every single drop had significance, and while some people might recall it as being boring, I recall it as being challenging in more interesting ways then getting one shot by a random monster on the map.
And yes I remember monsters with ele reflect :)
Your literally the original target audience, I can't believe it took you so long to try it
i've been playing this game for nearly a decade. it's an absolute joy to watch you run through this game finally.
Hell i remember Totalbiscuit playing with the developers years ago. It's amazing how the game keeps improving and relevant .
RIP Totalbiscuit the gaming legend.
Same tht video is what put in onto Poe now 6 years later I'm hooked
The game really came a long way since that time, really glad that TB helped with it's exposure (especially to me personally)
1:38:33 Nope. Despite what most players say. You can't brick a build. You can always trade for Orbs of Regret, using other currency. You can even respect your first Lab, and pick another ascendancy out of the three. Two orbs of regret for every one skill node, in Ascendancy.
as a long time PoE fan, I have to say your 'blight' sound is very accurate to what goes through my mind when I use that skill. Bliiiiiight.
Changing the pie chart to a radar plot halfway through the rant
alignment: chaotic powerpoint
I like how it is exactly 13:37 when the game starts, atta boy!
Would've been hilarious if his first Hillock was a rare Uber Hillock spawn.
Also, when he was searching keywords in the skilltree, I fully expected the Duelist starting point to start blinking when he typed "handsome".
Uber Hillock has spawn restrictions, you cannot get him on a normal run.
Uber Hillock cannot spawn as the first boss
@@00Krohnos I don't think it can spawn before lvl 5.
Didn't know there was a restriction on when it could spawn, just that it was rare. When you farm for Oni, you just run the first map with many character slots until you actually get him.
@@enlightendbel Honestly i farmed for Oni one league and either my RNG was trash or it's just extremely unlikely but it took like 40 hours for one to drop. Never again.
I have 2000 hours of poe and barely understand the basics, hope day9 continue this so we can learn something
Rants in a pants is my favorite segment in every episode
"There is no restraint in New Zealand" is such a great quote
I was wondering what game Day9 was playing while waiting for server restart. So I scrolled with my mouse on the slider towards the end of the video and saw a bunch of graphs in paint
and paint. you know the way to my heart
radius * % of circle = gives you the game of the year score!
About your analogy about charts about old games vs new games. Let's take GTA III and GTA V, basically two exact same games, one new, one old (but one with a way better story). Personally I think that GTA V was way harder then GTA III. But for the sake of it, let's do a mission and screw it up:
GTA III says: you die, you lose EVERYTHING, except your money, which we will a chunk from. Go buy new guns, get a new car, drive back and try again. That could take from a few minutes, to half an hour, depending where the mission was. Plus another few minutes to an hour, depending on what part of the mission you died.
GTA V says: you die, but we expected it, so we'll take you to a place we saved for you so you can try again. You lose a tiny bit of progress and if you die too much, you can just skip the mission.
Even though GTA V was harder, the punishment for losing in GTA III was very severe! If you lost the mission and you didn't save, you could lose hours of progress! But once you completed the mission, I remember feeling so much completion and fulfillment! A feeling I didn't have with GTA V.
This analogy doesn't work with your charts, maybe you can take something from this and improve your analogy. Let's take Elden Ring: With each boss fight, the game'll create a save each time the boss gets to a new state. What happens with your chart now?
So pumped to watch you play this! I've been playing for several years and I still don't feel like I've gotten as deep into the game as I would like! There's just so much STUFF :)
I'm happy to see you jumping into this rabbit hole I discovered the game in 2014 and haven't been able to put it down since its amazing watching a new player at this point in the games development considering the fact that when I was a new player we still were only playing 3 acts over and over again.
Never thought about how the monetization is just another feature of the game, and not criticized! Every league I think about what I want to buy or how I want to support. Some leagues I do, some I don't. They've created such a deep game for free that you WANT to give them money. It's taken me about 5 leagues to finally be comfortable playing, but it feels fresh every time.
When I first played this, I also took the approach of just diving in a feeling my way through. For me, it just seems like a better way to learn how things work.
Scion not unlocked, first time player looks legit! top notch
"Something that sucks is fetishized." You just explained the whole game xD
I love that example of rating games you made at the end. It's not just about how tight and well crafted the experience is but also how big or deep it is. With more depth and size there is a lot more trash but the good stuff, "the order of magnitude," feels so good. On the flipside a tighter experience leaves less trash and filler and is rewarding in its own way. It's taking the Protoss v. Zerg approach. Quality or Quantity. Last of Us takes the Protoss experience and Poe or Elden Ring takes the Zerg approach.
That approach finally allows me to explain why I love stuff like ArmA, in all its buggy glory. So much of the game is unoptimized garbage and I was in mad love with A2:OA. The ArmA series probably has a big grey circle with a tiny fun slice that's just unparalleled in its quality.
9 "I don't need help. I know what the fuck I'm doing"
9 10 minutes ago: sells useful currency items for useless lesser tiered currency items
I feel Seans pain with his eyes.
Spent years with the same issues, kept buying bigger and better monitors, kept getting extreme eye fatigue.
Then I had my eyes checked and found that due to prolonged (3 decades of daily use) computer use, I need glasses that have effect at about 1-1.5 meters from my face.
I can perfectly see close and perfectly see far, but at the range a monitor is, it's blurry and I needed glasses.
Getting them had half of my headache incidences go away. (and whadayakno, I can see everything on my screen without effort)
I just started playing for the first time too. Had to take a break from SC and MTG :P
I've played a few hardcore characters back in the beta. But the web guides and hours of minmax knowledge is what initially turned me off. So I did what you did at league start. Jump on a Ranger, figure it out myself and have fun at a casual pace
"Ahhh ... this game is ALl im gonna fkn do for the next Year isnt it? ...?
😂 im fkn duying here this video is comedy gold
"welcome to the help panel.....Help!" hahaha
I am mind blown by the last part. He played 1 hour and already understand Poe.
only took me like 3k hours to get a tentative grasp on the game. 7k hours now and I understand the mechanics but still have no strong knowledge of all the interactions between keystones and uniques and what not.
Choosing the only character with perma-sexy legs is the right option.
If anyone loves fan fics, there's an old series somewhere that details how each character ended up in exile. Incredibly well written and tons of fun. I'd highly recommend even if you have no interest in playing.
I am so upset I missed this live but am so excited one of my favourite streamers is dipping into this great game. I'm definitely going to set some time to watch on launch!
Glad to see new player getting into this game. Prepare to spend years to master the game. Good luck.
The chart analogy for PoE is pretty accurate, but the segment of fun gets wider as you learn more about the game.
The serendipity of restarting my playthrough while not knowing Sean is now playing and then finding thid has made my day.
Been playing this game for 8+ years and it keeps getting better, glad that Sponsored Content gave him an excuse to try it out.
I have taped all 214 of my chicken legs together, but it still refuses to cluck.
Its always so funny to watch new players scour every grey drop on the ground, vs when they have been playing and dont even bother looking unless their loot filter highlights it.
How could you otherwise? When a pack of white monsters drops 5 inventories full of white items, I would stop bothering too.
The reason new leagues are during periods when new MTG sets appear is because Chris Wilson needs our money to fund his ever growing collection of cards. And from their statistical data most of the game's revenue happens within the first week of a new league.
Also your fun pie chart at the end is very accurate as to how PoE's philosophy differs from modern games. Because of the so many different mechanics that are interconnected, this game is complex as hell to play and just planning your character takes real effort. But once your character is online, it feels so powerful. Watch any endgame player zooming through maps vs. a player playing through the story acts and it will look like a different game altogether. However many players also quit because they couldn't reach that level of endgame coz they fked up their build somewhere during the story mode and now their character is as sturdy as wet paper. It's also why most just follow build guides, they're basically like the old strategy guides or walkthrough guides, telling you what to do.
Me personally I love building my own character, and let me tell you for every 1 well built character I have failed maybe 5-6 others, but the joy of having a build I personally crafted without looking at guides mowing enemies is the best rush ever.
how many guide characters did you build before having successful brews?
@@888ian2 it took me 2 leagues until I was able to make my own trapper build properly without copying guides. But after that making trap builds became easy for me. For bow builds I still fail a lot, but have had a couple of successes. Melee and spell builds i usually take 2-3 iterations to get it right. But most of that happens in path of building (3rd party build planner) not in game. I dont play minion or totem builds so I suck at them, but I have made ballista totem builds, since they are technically bow builds. Also damage over time builds, I have made a lot of those.
I still read guides from time to time because there are a lot of variations when it comes to building your character and you can get decent advice on how to cover your weaknesses from others. But I dont follow them strictly anymore.
This is awesome I hope you love this game its super complicated but its the best arpg.
Used to watch this guys starcraft content years ago.
Funny to stumble on him again randomly, and vaguely recognizing his voice and cadence.
I enjoyed this way too much. As someone with some number of thousands of hours in PoE, and who has also followed your streams/vids since at least 2010, I look forward to 1. the jokes and 2. the moments of discovery in this game, of which there are SO many (after thousands of hours, I still learn things all the time -- and not just the new thing).
If this holds his attention Day9 could easily become a PoB fanatic
As soon as I saw that Day9 was embarking on a PoE journey, I knew it would be hilarious, and I was not disappointed. This game is such a confusion simulator for newbs that it's a meme unto itself
That first miniboss on the beach slaughtered me three times in a row. Used all my hp pots. No chance. I then uninstalled the game.
Considering how much D9 seems to love Diablo 2, I have a feeling he's really going to love this game. There has not been a better successor to D2 than Path of Exile, period.
He's also a math wiz and programmer.
Two things that appeal immensely to me about PoE.
The amount of theorycrafting you can do with the game because of the skilltree and plethora of systems is just unrivaled.
I'm not far enough into the video to know if he did, but I seriously hope he discovers Path of Building and does a whole stream nerding out over it.
On a scale from 1/10 where would you put the Torchlight games? (if you've played them)
@@Myrdin90 I'd give all 3 games a solid 6/10, mostly because the games have just the content they are released with and from graphics to systems are all very kids level.
They seem very suited as a first ARPG to get into the genre as a kid kinda level.
There have been plenty of other games who have improved on the formula but none with the same feel to them. POE could be so much better but as long as the current dev/balance team is in charge no fun will be allowed.
@@trololkhil9868 I've been having plenty of fun.
LOL bonus points for the git commit :D
There are a lot of good feelings in the world, but one of the greatest is any league reveal with "Hi, I am Chris Wilson from Grinding Gear Games" and than listen to him like 2 hours while nerding over all the new stuff they revealed.
46:24 - Saved by levelup. Phew.
Watching Sean's good and bad decisions... fun!
Later to listen to this, but when you brought up materia at around 10:00, that was my first reaction to skill gems and supports. Great minds think alike :D 20 minutes in and I'm loving your take on this game so far XD
I am SO excited to see Day9 on PoE
What a TREAT of a video to see one of the StarCraft Legends to play my second favorite game ,first being sc2 :P big big love Day9
I just love that you're supposedly enjoying it but lovingly ripping it apart.
Love to see it. First PoE experience is so fun to watch. the way you discover things is so entertaining.
I can't wait to see when he realizes "alt" will show even more hidden information when hovering over items.
Watching him wrestle with the Sentinel (which btw I have no clue wtf any of that shit means) I'm seriously in tears.
This video is gold, love the take on vampire survivors, but the best part of PoE being 90% unplayable trash is you can play through the game disregarding 90% of that unplayable trash so you really only need to care about 20% of the game.
Day[9] spiritual successor to greek philosphers confirmed. "Fuck it, yolo!" Day[9] '22
I've been playing MTG since Ice Age. I own/invested thousands of/on cards, but PoE is king when it comes to video games.
18:43 saving for future use.
and 1:36:08
Looking forward to your edited cut of Sean streams soon haha
i remember my first time playing, now after 5 or so years of playing on and off, i still feel like its my second time playing. I got better this league so next league i can play a little better. still cant beat the game
I love "I like hoard. I'll sell everything!" line. Hope someone do it in PoE. ^^
This man has spent more time on the beach that I have combined .......I have 4k hours
PoE passive tree is the endgame raid boss
Welcome to Poe, hope u find lots of fun, good luck with your game!
Knowing Chris Wilson is a MTG fan makes me think the league drops aren't a coincidence...
First time playing poe.... opens with "take two"
Underrated comment
"Eat shit" I had a good laugh :D
46:27 This frame perfect level up on not fucking dying.
Hey Editor, I think adding the chat for certain games, like this one, where Day9 interacts a LOT with it, would be nice. Of course ask Sean how he feels, but I would personally appreciate being able to see them. And I mean, yeah, I don't much care for Twitch banter but if he backs'n'forths with 'em a lot I'd like the context myself.
Can’t believe you’re finally playing PoE. Such a good game BECAUSE it’s so in depth
57:39 Opens inventory and makes less space. haha🤣
Love your breakdown of games fun vs BS. My thoughts exactly.
Everyone gets overwhelmed by the skill tree when its literally just final fantasy 10. We got a combo of FF7 materia and FF10 sphere grid. Only difference is instead of showing party members location on the grid here we have a place holder graphic what other classes starting location is
Glad I'm not the only one that thought about the sphere grid when I saw this.
At the same time this is really fun to watch, but also really frustrating how slowly he is progressing and how many things he is getting wrong or not noticing.
That's a _You_ problem though. :D
New league starts in 2 days. And tbh since patch 3.17 and the introduction of Atlas Passive Tree it's much easier and more understandable to get into the endgame gameplay loop than before. Before you were bombarded with those "Triple Beyond Nemesis3 100% Deli Unique Watchstone Blablablablabla 5000 Step Farming Method" recommendations and you were like -bruh WTF!
Today you see the atlas skill tree which is complex for the first 5 minutes, then you get it. You want to extract wealth from Expedition, you allocate Expedition clusters on it. You like doing Blight and want to get more Blighted Maps - you allocate Blight clusters. You are a bossing character that has bad clearspeed but great singletarget damage, you allocate bossing-related clusters. It's really quite simple and you can grasp it yourself, without watching a 45 minute guide that explains the first half of steps needed to take in order to farm efficiently.
Hahaha dude, great episode! Keep it up man. :)
I laughed so hard I literally cried!
i went on steam to see reviews of the game and there is one dude with 36K hour played, that's over 4 year of playing. I dont have that kind of time man!
when I see your cat I miss mine... she loved to sleep on my keyboard too and ripped so many of my hardcore chars
edit: by the way get a heating mat for your cat if you have enough space infront or behind your keyboard - as your keyboard is warmer than the table the cat loves to lay down on the keyboard - with a decent sized heating mat you can make her sleep on the map on her own choice ;)
When even the cat goes mapping !
Started playing in Sentinel league too. Was very confused what they were about
I started right at the beginning of sentinel and now I have 700 hours+ played. love it
Watched on twitch already but I'm so excited for Day 9 to play PoE! Let's go!!!
Anybody who likes diablo, please try this game it is amazing. Just be prepared for that it will take somewhere around 100-200 hours to really understand how good it is. and why it is so superior to all other diablo clones.
How can that talent system be real? I had anxiety and exhaustion just glancing at it.
