Scariest moment in a 4WD was wheeling out the back of Coffs Harbour at Magic Pools. Was trying to bypass a swimming hole and slid in on a sketchy side angle. Nearly rolled my 80 series in the water and had a 5 hour recovery to get her out. All the electrics were cooked and ripped out a tyre valve stem from all the rocks.

Cooking scene has me in stitches. Sketchy time on the tracks was doing a steering arm on the Rover trail. Got towed out at midnight and had to break it to the misses that our holiday in Coffs had been extended 3 days whilst the part came up from Sydney.

Scariest memory on a track was when I was young. Stepdad drove into a gully that was blocked off by a fallen tree, only way to get out was pull pelt reverse and jumped the side of the gully! Got a bit of air coming out and got the bum clenching for sure

My boyfriend was teaching me how to 4WD, in a manual none the less, and we came to the top of what I would describe as a huge sand dune. I was terrified! Still getting use to manual driving, he told me to keep 1st gear and just guide the car down. To me, guide meant just steer the car, because gravity would take care of the rest… initially this was good, we were driving slowly down this huge sand dune, until the car started sliding side ways! I tried to counteract it with no success. My boyfriend finally said “drive the car!” I thought I was. Apparently I needed to apply a little throttle to drive down this crazy descent. Well I drove that 4WD down the sand dune and there was no looking back. I’ll never forget that lesson. It was both terrifying and exciting, all rolled into one. The main thing is, I conquered it 😜

It went in its side and I saw that little blue esky roll out the back window. I’ll never forget the bad gut feeling that I was gonna lose my drinks. Still haunts me to this day.

Scariest time in the tracks, crooked river track Dargo, river over the bonnet on the first crossing, but made it through, 2nd crossing not quite as deep, 3rd crossing got a car length in and it dropped in deep, water came 3/4s of the way up the screen and it was still going down but quick as a flash was able to hit reverse and backed out as quick as I could, shit ourselves 🤣🤣

The absolute scariest time was we were in a 92 toyota hilux x-cab. Wheeling alone and getting bogged down by heavy wet snow. We tried to turn around and ended up on three wheels pointed down the mountain, suspended in the air on frozen on the left pedal. Any movement would have gone over.

Hah cracker of an ep boys!
Greatest pucker moment would have to be about a decade ago in an '89 Troopy going down some big steps in the Wattagans. Got down the last step with perhaps too much momentum and sat the old girl on her bullbar with the rest of her almost dead plumb in the air. Suffice to say that I was so puckered that had I farted only a dog would hear a note that high and everything was suddenly on the dash and windscreen.
Always frothing for these episodes, when do they become twice daily?
    Cheers

Donr a 50 point turn on a skinny track to head back down and right at the bottom my front slid into a rut, lifted the rear about 5 feet off the ground and rocked on my side step and front left tyre for two hours waiting on a recovery 😂 1p our of 10 did not want to land on my lid so had my foot planted on the brake just holding on for dear life 😂😂

Scariest moment for me. I was driving down a old 4wd track next to the train line after a few days of heavy rain. Got to a heavy decline with full on ruts. Me trying to adhere to my misses needs tried to pick the smooth route and as soon as I hit the whole car slid down into the rut and lost all traction, basically putting me on a 50 degree angle and lifting the side of the car up and bouncing. Surprised it didn’t tip. Ended up driving out but still a good story at the end of the day

Lost track of time and the tide came in, had to absolutely guts it 500m through the water and waves, lost sight of the ramp and got told to “HOOK IT NOW” by my mate in passengers, bounced up the concrete ramp (thought for sure I’d broke something hitting it at 50km) and scared the life out of us both

Scariest time on a track was when I ate some of mums diner with habanero
    Chillies.
    Put it this way.
I pulled apart the chilli with fingers.
That’s where I started wrong. I had pain in my thumbs for over 2 weeks.
Everytime I sucked thumbs my tongue got burnt.
While winging I somehow rubbed my eyes.
    Either that or chilli jumps.
So my eyes were stuffed for an hour.

The scariest time on the tracks was close to home took a wrong turn from my mates (under the misus instruction) found myself on a very steep climb tried to winch. The winch blew. Hooked my mate's winch up using a snatch block off a tree. Ended up pulling the tree out of the ground onto the car just missing the roof landing on the bonnet. Pulled another 2 trees out of the ground onto the bonnet before we managed to get the car up and out 4 hours later. Each time thought I was a goner.
We were trying to rush the recovery as the hole I was stuck in previously I needed to be winched out and my other mates finger got pulled in from the control's being reversed. 1 severed finger later and a rush to get out of the bush.

My scariest moment was when I was just 17ish. I was driving my dad's truck like a complete fool, on an icy road. I got into a slide that I just couldn't get out of and ended up going off the side of the cliff. I have no idea how I didn't roll it. There was also so much snow, that only the rear bumper got a small dent and scratch. It took a few trucks and questionable winching to get the truck back on the road.

my scariest 4wd story was from the other night 4wding around a mates property and i had decided to take the farm quad out to follow the boys, i had a passenger on board and we rolled the quad going down a hill, this wasn't a tip off the side, it was ass over end. both getting crushed . pretty danm lucky to be walking. mates still in hospital with a few serious injuries but man some new seat covers for his 4wd would cheer him up
Another story of my scariest moment out 4wding for me, would of been just north of Auckland, New Zealand. In a place called Poutu, literally like your in the dunes of dubai or something, but i cooked my gearbox in my 80 series landcruiser, had no drive in any gears and had to get towed back all through the dunes by another 80 series.. about half way through of trying to get to a place we could camp all trucks got stuck in quicksand and it was a rush to get them out.
luckily one of the lads had max tracks and it was just enough to get the two 80s out of the quicksand, man they have some grunt when needed, especially when your buried up to the sills in 3 town vehicles and we could see them getting sucked in deeper and deeper

I can’t pick between 2 bad experiences😅 the first was a innocent looking bog hole at the beach I’ve done a stupid amount of times. Dropped in an diffed out halfway through(bloody safari pumpkins) took over an hour and a half to recover me out. Started with the water up to the hubs. Ended with the water halfway up the doors. Thought I was going to loose my truck. Second was a chicken track at our local dunes. I was too wide for the main track so had to go the chicken. Came around the corner and realised the bay was at high tide which ment the main chicken was blocked. Had to hold it on the tipping point around a corner to make it out as I couldn’t go backwards(and 18yr old me can’t wait for the tide to go out) hit a stick and she went straight onto 2 wheels. Don know how I saved it but stayed somewhat upright. Did have to change my pants

my scariest moment 4wding was we did a night run. started off great we started 4wding at 8pm after a long day of tracks with a dinner break in-between. after a few hours into the night run things went south. A patrol we were travelling with nearly tipped in the worst spot. soft sand on a flowing creek bed, his wheels dug into the side of the sand bank and collapsed. By this time is 2am and we have pulled him up enough to see he popped his tyre clean off the bead so we had to skull drag him out which was extremely difficult in this position. Me and my mate left to go get a high lift jack in my car and his car as it was safer to travel in pairs and others were there to assist the patrol. was 4:30am when we got back to flat ground because the fog was so severe you couldn't see past the bonnet. My mate radioed in we have to stop, I stopped and he radioed in "we are in trouble mate"... he couldn't see with the fog and drove straight through a ditch, his girlfriend lifted off the seat and landed on the centre console breaking her tail bone. Now there was a real sense of urgency to Get out. we calmed her down and mentally prepared her for the final BRUTAL climb. We already completed this track 12 hours prior so we knew this track was tough but once completed it was easy to get back to camp. I didn't install my recovery points and neither had a winch. both were twin locked idiots. got half way up the climb and I heard the dreaded BANG. blew my Cv half way up. we tried everything to get up nothing worked. hours rolled by trying to get up. we ended up back at camp at 8am the next day. Left for the hospital straight away. was a scary experience but defiantly made us realise safety equipment is a must. Those seat covers would of been handy I think we all shit ourselves haha

my scariest moment was checking out a local beach track with my 95 pajero. she has 31s and stock suspension that needs replacing. But I decided to go down this kinda steep but rocky and sketchy track and my first time going down and first time in the area. As I was going down the tube that supplies the vacuum from the engine to the brake booster came off just after I started going down. I shoved my foot on the brakes because I was at a bad angle and knowing my old girl is naturally top heavy I was scared I was going to roll. After shoving my foot on the brakes and realising I wasn't stopping I ended up ripping the handbrake up thankfully I fixed it the same morning because otherwise I would have ended up on the side and would rolled down a hill. I fixed the tube and got down safely. the tube also then came off on the highway in the same spot where it happened to my mate and he rear ended someone. I was trying to stop for a red light and nearly ended up in front of a roadtrain. I bought her off my mate for $250. Rebuilt the front end and shes good as gold. Now I'm replacing the clutch because it died last weekend after pulling someone out of a bog. But yea I nearly ended up on the roof because the brakes failed. thankfully handbrake didnt

My scariest time behind the wheel would've been literally 2 weeks ago, brother and I went 4WDing in a local area in Victoria, I am driving a 2021 MR Triton 2.4L with a set of 31"s Highway Terrain! my brother is driving is 2002 Nissan Navara 3L with a set of 35" aggressive muds - we got stuck at the bottom of a valley with the alternate route full of unpassable mud. So we decided to go back up the same hill we descended from, which has a rock in the worse position if you fail the climb it will scratch the entire side of your car, did I mention my 2021 Triton is 2 months old with 2,500ks on the clock? So my brother went first, he barely made the climb, so I gave it a crack, fail after fail after fail. Eventually we thought we have to winch, oh did I mention the 2 month old Triton didn't have winch? so I got high enough where my brother can hook up to me, my nephew who was with us was meant to be watching my brothers reversing because there was a dead drop off the hill not far from the exit of the climb. My brother winches me but requires more flat ground so reverses, my nephew didn't say a word, I get up the hill my brother starts to fall down the other side. With both cars foot down we managed to keep him from sliding down with me still hooked to him. Was a bloody close one.

Scariest moment: nearly sank my in-laws brand new LR disco while he wasn't looking
He jumps out to help someone bogged at the cutting, parks in a shit spot on the beach. I'm in the passenger seat, says to me keep an eye on the tide. Completely get distracted watching the carnage unfold around us due to the soft sand. 10 mins later big wave hits in the car. Jump into the drivers and start driving, she sinks a bit. Think shit well this is about to become a Sea Rover. Back of a bit and the thing manages to find a bit of traction before another wave rolls in. In-law comes back non the wiser, tell him I was just moving it up so he didn't have to walk back as far.
Was certainly not my brightest moment, then again he left it near the edge of the beach on an incoming tide.....

Without a doubt, my scariest moment behind the wheel of my 4WD was when I was in the big rig, making out with my girlfriend and my wife walked into the shed looking for a screwdriver. Boy, do I need new seat covers!

My scariest moment would be I went out to a mates new property and we where cruising around in my n70 hilux and there was an over grown ditch off to the side of the track and I dident see it and I drove into it and the front right tyre slid into the ditch and we where on a mad angle and we jumped out and the rear tyre was head high and I’m 6.2.

The scariest thing that's happened to me was taking the misso for her first 4wd trip in my tb patrol on a local track that I'd driven 1000 times. Went to drive the what looked like a puddle because the main line was a bit rough then all of a sudden both drive side wheels were off the ground and her window was under water, let's just say some seat covers would have come in handy that day 😂

My great grandpa had two old 40 series. He lived on a farm on the side of a mountain. The legend only stopped farming when he was in his 90’s. One day he was having lunch whilst sitting on the bonnet of one of his 40 series. It was on a steep track. The exact same thing happened with the handbrake and he had to leap off, at 89 years of age, as the vehicle sped off down the mountain. He walked away with a broken collar bone. That bloody legend just kept on going, nothing could stop him, until cancer did. R.I.P to my great grandpa.

scariest moment was trying to get up a steep rocky track while my hilux kept going into limp mode losing all power after filling her with water in a deep mud hole 30mins earlier. Having to roll back down backwards to get into a safe spot to clear codes and have another crack wasnt ideal.

Scariest moment I’ve had behind the wheel was on my first solo trip over at Moreton, was absolutely pelting down with rain when I arrived at in the dark and upon backing into the beach camp site, I got myself bogged to the diffs in the old GU. Had to leave her in the path of the high tide until the morning when I went to take a look at the damage of the water and realised I had left the front hubs unlocked 🙄. Glad to say water didn’t reach the exhaust and I’ve never gone back on the beach without checking the hubs at least 7 times 😂.

I’ve had the same with the front end not being engaged while on the beach. You feel really dumb when you find out later one. My rear tyres were getting the oncoming tide still had 5 hours till high tide. Managed to get a mate to drag me after hours of struggle.
