      Nice video! What are your thoughts about Esmerelda, Mulan or Pocahontas’s “I Want” songs?? I don’t really count Belle’s reprise as a full blown song mainly because it’s only a couple verses answering how the villagers see Belle. I also totally agree with your opinion about how Part of Your World exploded in popularity and was a huge reason why the Little Mermaid easily became one of the most popular Disney characters, because of how relatable she is. Did you know this song actually wasn’t supposed to be in the movie, Ariel was originally supposed to have a song specifically about how much she desired Eric specifically. I feel if that happened, it would’ve greatly affected the movie’s performance because it’d portray Ariel as a teenage brat giving up everything for a dude she barely knows. There’s a deleted song from Pocahontas called If I Never Knew You which unfortunately wasn’t in the original release. I truly believe if this song stayed, more people wouldn’t be so tough on the movie nowadays and regard it as a fictional adaptation instead of hounding and bullying it for being something it’s not, especially when several other Disney/non get away with the same problems

    Oh, they made it vague on purpose because all the songwriter was given was that it was about a girl living in a kingdom where wishes could be granted but she just found out the king isn't as charming as he seemed. So the WRITER didn't even have any clues about Asha's character.

      @@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Disney used to understand that music was an integral part of the storytelling, not something to slap on top later. There are still some major problems in how the songs were written, and part of me feels bad that the writer is getting so roasted when she’s so young (though that’s limited since she’s old enough to make the decision to hold herself out as a professional, and part of being professional is having the ability to stand up to harsh criticism), so the lack of info isn’t an excuse. There are problems on both ends.

    I am not very well versed in musical theory, more of a story structure guy myself.
    But one thing I noticed is that Asha’s song seems to lack the “but” and “what I hope” elements of the “I want song”.
    Take “part of your world”. Ariel doesn’t just say that she wants to go see the humans but also explains why is prevented from doing so. Which is that her father is forbidding it. The “but” the thing holding her back. And she also explains “why” or what she wants to happen, if she gets what she wants. Which is to sate her curiosity about all the things she doesn’t understand.
    Or “how far will I go” from Moana. She wants to go explore the sea, hoping to find adventure and excitement but she is prevented by her responsibility as next chief. During the latter sections the song changes to a hard beat that feels like strict marching, while in the former it is lighter and more dreamlike.
    Asha seems to lack those sections. Making her want feel hollow. Nothing is really preventing her from getting what she wants and I don’t get why she even wants those things in the first place.

    • @NoelleTakestheSky
      @NoelleTakestheSky 7 месяцев назад +59

      We get an idea of WHO Ariel is, WHAT she wants, WHERE she wants to go, WHEN she wants it (we get a sense or urgency rather than what she wants being something that would be nice to have in the future), and a sense of WHY she wants what she wants. She’s stifled and a dreamer and explorer who wants to explore a new world and experience all life has to order her without the limits of the ocean. She really needs this now because she’s struggling to breathe with the limits. She wants to get into the human world so she can breathe and be free.
      Tiana is a hard worker who wants to reach her goal. “Where” for her is literally her goal. Almost there. She’s getting there. Where? Her goal. She wants to get there when she earns her way. Why? Soul food makes people happy.
      You can tell all these things in good I-want songs.
      What the fuck do we really know about Asha?

    • @frankwest5388
      @frankwest5388 7 месяцев назад +38

      @@NoelleTakestheSky
      Haven’t heard “almost there “ in a while but if I remember correctly doesn’t Tiana sing about how she grew up in poverty and how owning a restaurant has been her and her mothers dream?
      Which makes it a really good example. It shows what she wants “to own her own restaurant” and why she wants it “because she thinks that one’s she has that thing, she is no longer poor”. But that song goes even a step further by adding a “how she thinks she can achieve that goal” to her characterization, which is “by working herself nearly to death”.
      Other “I want” songs songs tend to not have an “how” section, because they are sung at a moment, where the MC doesn’t know how they can get what they want, which is often the cause of them feeling so desperate to sing in the first place. Good examples for that would be “reflection” from Mulan or “part of your world” from the little mermaid.
      Also shoutout to the songs that have a “how” that turn out wrong. Like “After today” from a Goofy Movie. Which might be a contender for best song from a story structural perspective ever. It sets up the world, gives us the MCs “want” “why” “but” and “how”. That being “be popular” “because she doesn’t want people to make fun of him” “he was a loser” and “he will pull a great stunt”. Sure he was wrong in the “want” and “how” but that doesn’t matter it’s part of his character arc to learn that the thing the thought was a symbol of success wasn’t what he really wanted. A classic “want” vs “need” arc

    “Soundscape” isn’t a term I’ve heard before, but as a musician, the concept comes up all the time when rehearsing a piece. Specifically in the percussion section, there are some instruments meant to replicate actual sounds like a rain stick or a lion’s roar drum (wonder what that’s meant to sound like). More abstractly, instruments can be meant to give certain connotations. A really cool example of this in use to its fullest is Eric Whitacre’s “Ghost Train”. The flutes sound like an old train whistle, the chimes sound like a railroad crossing, and the snare sounds like the chugging of an old steam train, just to name a few effects that Whitacre uses to immerse the listener and make them feel like they’re really witnessing a ghost train.

    Some of this video, as someone who HAS seen the movie is a little frustrating because *I* know the context. *I* know that Asha was told to basically shut up and accept what the king's doing by her family. *I* know that everyone in the kingdom knows their desires are taken away and the shock and horror is that the king doesn't plan on granting most wishes and doesn’t want to give them back either (which seems like an open secret tbh since only one wish is granted per month and no one has ever gotten their wish back before). *I* know she's talking about her dead dad and that at this point her grandpa is like "I guess my wish just isn't worthy so there's no need for me to have it."
    But, y'know, then I remember that Julia Michaels ALSO didn't know anything about the plot of the movie! Almost like rewrites are an essential part of the process as the story develops and cutting corners by just shoehorning in a vague song doesn't work!

So I can go forward and be perfectly happy without that wish having come true because I don’t want it anymore.

The only "problem" was caused by Asha's delusions so the movie can have a conflict. Now that i think about it, a movie about Magnifico's backstory, how he became a sorcerer and how he built Rosas would be a much better concept instead. Especially considering it would be kinda similar to Walt Disney's life story, both of them created a kingdom and magic from scratch (Walt metaphorically created those two and Magnifico did it literally). You think I watched it?), a vibe for Asha's I want song would be "Asha feels lost, she realizes what she wants but doesn't know how to get it, she wishes on a star," and the structure of the song kinda messed that up so it's more "she's lost, she realizes what she wants and wishes on a star, starts hesitating because she doesn't know what to do, wishes on a star again"

      thing is, she doesn't really wish for anything, she is the closest to a dead poet society kind of complain as you can get haha (wanting that undetermined "more", you could totally see her as a frustrated artist haha, having everything yet being distasisfied even before knowing anything about magnifico's ways, etc), but she is depicted as an adorkable character, not someone with a hollow void of depression and being lost😂😂 . So they really wrote themselves into a corner there.
      She wishes, because she likes the concept of wishing basically. She doesn't wish for anything specific neither in the story nor on the song.....the closest she gets to utering a wish, is wanting to give everyone's wishes and memories back, but that comes later with magnifico's revelation, and it is a bit of a stretch to call it "her" wish, it's more of "her task" in the way the movie goes about it...

There’s actually an mep made of this on RUclips with all the Disney heroines. The song matches all the characters, but I realized that just shows how generic the song is.

    Hear me out: "This Wish" ends up not being an "I want" song, it's an "I am" song. An "I want" song needs to show a lack of capability and a clear direction of how the character can change and grow.
    Ariel cant go on land because of physical limitations, Aladdin cant be happy because society refuses to let him move on, Belle can't find fulfillment because she isn't even certain what shes searching for.
    But Asha, whats stopping her? She knowns everything she needs ro know, is physically capable, and has people who support her to back her up.
    "This Wish" fails as an "I Want" song because it fails to show how she is lacking in anything to acheive her goals.
    She isn't singing "I want something better for us" she sings "I will make something better for us." Not inherently a had sentiment but critically fails as an "I want" song that outlines her motivations and character arc

    After thinking about it, I feel like a vague "I want" song could be an interesting concept if they changed Asha's motivation. Imagine if Asha was one of the people that gave up her wish and now feels empty inside. In that scenario, a vague "I want" song would make sense since she doesn't remember what she wants. The song could then carry a theme of self-discovery as she sings about all the possibilities of what her wish was and who she wanted to be.

    Your rewrites were SO perfect in addressing the insane vagueness of her entire I-Want song. Cause I remember in my first time watching the movie and getting to this song (after having just experienced whiplash from hearing the King and Asha sing a not-so-subtle love song about wishes) and waving my arms around to ask Asha "you want more than 'this'? Girly what the hell does 'this' mean??" cause this line gave me yet another whiplash from hearing "Welcome to Rosas" only like 20 minutes before her I-Want song that very clearly established how happy and well taken care of the people in Rosas are??? Like what is "THIS" Asha?? What more do you want that this town you loved only two scenes ago not giving you or its people anymore?? Also, quick note about the more emotional part of her song - she's actually singing to/about her dead father which to me, makes the song even worse because by that point of the story, we've really only heard Asha mention her father and how the loss hurt her once to the king. So when we do get to this emotional moment of the song, I can tell we're MEANT to feel loss and longing but to be honest, I felt none of that. We hadn't built any emotional connection to Asha's dad so your rewrite to have it be centered to/for her Saba makes SO MUCH more sense.
    This movie being the plan to honor Disney animation for the last century was such a disappointing let down. But I'm glad I found your channel through this video!

    Great video. I learned a lot. I will say that the movie itself is poorly written. When she sings this song, she's actually the villain. Everything the king does to this point is 100% consentual. Everyone likes what he does and Asha herself says how happy everyone in Rosas is to live this way. The only reason Asha switches gears is because her grandfather's wish isn't going to get granted. Which, the king has every right to decide. Some wishes ARE dangerous. The wishes given to him are done so willingly.
    Then Asha with her "wish" breaks and enters and essentially only steals her grandfather's wish without really caring about the rest. It's classic entitlement.
    Only after this, does the king lose it and embrace dark magic to try and set it right where he loses sight of everything and learns that he can improve his power by crushing the wishes.
    This is still trying to be a twist villain. If this was a return to a real Disney villain, he would promise to keep all wishes safe but secretly crush them all to gain more power. If Asha stumbled onto THAT I could see her wanting to take action, otherwise she's just a criminal.
    Also, it doesn't really seem like the king needs an apprentice for anything. They can't learn the magic. It's just a reason for Asha to be able to see the wishes. It's contrived. Painfully so. Why not have her be the King's daughter?
    Then we'd actually have a Disney princess. And while I'm making my own wish, I want the version that had a romance with the starboy.
    We were robbed. But hey, guess next time they'll have to throw caution to every warning sign. 😅

While some stuff might be good or nesesary, like the "I'm not trying to fix this, I'm doing tihis for education." You don't need to explain that you are not in a studio. The point is that you show us what you mean not that the sound quality is good or perfect. No one gives a fuck and if they do, it is miniscule percent.

    Why did it fail? One, it's too wordy. The sentences were so long that it didn't fit with the rhythm of the musical notes. It felt like a ripoff of Moana's I want Song, "How Far I'll Go," and Mirabel's song "Waiting on a Miracle." . Second, it's too vague. If it was a reguler pop song by pop star, I wouldn't mind. But songs for musicals are supposed to be specific to the story. Whoever told the songwriter to write the song, should have given her more details to it.

  • @kingagrabowska9366

    1. The beginning is quite nice but then it gets to ''But when I speak they tell me ''Sit down''''. It's a small thing but you already have a disconnection. If someone tells you to stop talking shouldn't they say ''Shut up'' or ''Be quiet''. What if she was talking while sitting down? It's a small thing but it does a lot. And those small things will be pulling up.
    2. ''This is where we've been but it's not where we belong''. I guess it's good then that you've been there and aren't anymore, right? Wouldn't it make more sense to write ''this is where we are'' or something? Is the person writing those songs a not native English speaker? I'm not and even I can tell it's wrong.
    3. ''Threw caution at every warning sign''. Don't you mean ''threw caution to the wind''? It also paints Asha as a careless idiot. An obvious warning? Evidence that something might be bad and dangerous. Fuck it! I threw all logic out the window. I get what they're trying to say but it's just so awkward. It's a problem with practically every song and every bar of text but I'm bringing attention to the biggest offenders.
    4. ''Then let me be the first to stand in line''. This is supposed to be powerful, inspiring, and her great challenge? Standing in the line as if she's in a supermarket? Couldn't come up with anything better? All tho standing in line in Disney parks might be a bigger challenge now that we know what's going on there. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up while not eating.
    5. ''So I make this wish for us to have something more for us than this'' is very specific (sarcasm). Asha really doesn't know what she wants. Or the writer really took the ''I want more'' song a took it literally. I wonder if they made it that way because they knew the song would be in the trailer and anything more descriptive would spoil the movie.
    6. ''I never knew I needed room to grow'' Are you stupid Asha? Obviously, you need room to grow physically but metaphysically as a character you don't need room. Is your brain so small you can't fit more than one through there? What does it have to do with anything? What the fuck is this lyric?
    7. ''I did what I was told when someone told me ''No'' '' Why ''no''? When someone tells you ''no'' it's usually in a ''No, don't do it.'' How does it make sense in the rest of the movie? She was Magnifico's apprentice for not even a one day, right? Who was ''always'' telling her ''no''? Her friends? Family? I think when parents tell you ''Don't play with a knife or don't jump on your head into shallow water.'' they have a point.
    8. ''Now I got this freedom in my bones, but I have a lid on, so it doesn't overflow'' What the fuck? I can't unsee the image of Asha with a pot lid on her head. And anyone who's ever cooked knows that lids will not stop overflowing. If something is about to overflow and you put a lid on it will just explode.
    9. ''I'm past tipping my toes in but no, I'm not past diving in'' Again, this metaphoric writing to say the most obvious things. The song is wasting time. Using whole paragraphs to say something that can be done with one simple phrase just to be different. It's so pretentious and ''I'm 14 and it's deep''. The song is almost over and it's keep building up.
    10. ''The way you always taught me to'' For those who don't know Asha is speaking about her dead father (because ''classic Disney''). In the concept for the movie it was supposed to be her grandfather but now he lives in the movie. At first, the Star was supposed to be the spirit of her grandfather that comes to help her but now it's just a random star. So she sings a song to a star, then she slips and sings to her dead dad, and Star answers. Is it the spirit of her father? It seems like a leftover with far less emotional impact now. You can't just pick random things from your old story willy-nilly expecting it to fit with the new one.
    11. Random vocals repeating what she sang.
    12. The ending is so lackluster. Remember when at the end of the songs characters would hold long notes?
    13. The whole feel of the song is just wrong. Asha is making a Wish because she feels powerless. But then she sings about growing, being motivated, and doing whatever it takes, which is fine. But it feels like they smashed two songs together ''I can go the distance'' and ''I'm wishing'', not in terms of music, lyrics, or visuals but in what they're singing about. I think it's possible for the two to work together. The plot of the movie seems to be at least partly about working for your wish but the execution was bad.
    14. I also don't like when people ''whale'' in their songs. When they constantly go ''yeah yeah'', ''oh oh'', ''ah ah'' etc, it feels like padding because the writer couldn't be bothered to come up with actual lyrics.
    In short, ''This Wish'' is a very boring and bland song both in terms of music and lyrics and the only thing stopping you from falling asleep are those awkward moments which your brains tries to make sense of.

    The "I Want" songs have always been my favorite. It's the embodiment of the main character. The embodiment of Asha is...nothing.
    Gosh, that pre-chorus is so much better. "At least this wish is mine and only mine." is loaded compared to what we actually get. "Then let me be first to stand in line" makes no sense to me. Girl, you are sparking revolution! You are not waiting in a queue! It makes her sound so passive.

      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  8 месяцев назад +1

      You are absolutely right!! They didn’t let her be strong at all 😭😭😭 and then I listened to the reprise while I was editing for my little discussion about the ending and it made me sooooo mad, because the villagers have the “good parts” and she is still upset/hopeless at the beginning. They didn’t want her to be strong or ANYTHING and I have no idea why 😭😭😭😭

    • @TuesdaysArt
      @TuesdaysArt 7 месяцев назад

      @@CalxiynCaresTooMuchYou were on point with Asha going backwards too. It's clear as day when you compare "they tell me to sit down but I've already started running" to "I'm past dipping my toes in but I'm not ready to dive in" (paraphrasing). The contrast between sitting down and running is greater than dipping your toes in the water and diving into the water. One is about going from a place of stasis to getting up and physically moving towards your goal; the other is just...you only have to jump in the water once. She doesn't even talk about the trouble she'd have staying afloat or getting through the rushing water, it just makes her sound like a little girl too afraid to jump in her swimming pool.
      I guess you can argue that the running and the diving are referring to different things, but it still baffles me. Asha's desire (for the people to know the truth about the king and advocate for something better) is inherently going against the king (and, therefore, revolutionary). There's no way for her to achieve this goal without going against the king because he made it clear that he won't change. She can either choose to be complacent and let things stay the way they are or put herself at risk to build the world she wants the citizens of Rosas to have...but this song makes her seem like she wants neither of those options? She wants the security of being complacent while still changing the world, but those things come into conflict with each other. It makes me wonder what Asha would've done if the star didn't show up and make things infinitely easier for her.
      I think I heard the reprise once, but it's silly that the villagers have the better parts. That's Asha's song! Imagine if the townspeople sung the reprise to "Belle". That takes away an important character moment from Asha (a character already lacking in character moments).

    honestly, as bad as 'throw caution to every warning sign' is, at least you can tell what it's TRYING to mean and comprehend it. imo 'this is where we've been but not where we belong' is arguably even worse, because it Literally Has No Meaning. it references nothing. it's hard to stress enough how disembodied it is from ANY context- place and belonging aren't themes or even concepts at any point in the movie. absolute net zero!
    oh and 'the way you always taught me to' is actually about her dad, who we know basically nothing about, including what he taught her. you'd think, based on the marketing, that asha would have a strong relationship with her grandfather, but he has only slightly more dimension and agency than a rock with googly eyes lmao

In '' Out there '' and '' Part of your world! '' it's easy to understand what the heroes wants. Here, not at all! The song is confusing and not memorable.
