Note for anyone else who was confused like me: The title card says "24 Grandes Etudes" because 24 etudes were initially planned by Liszt, yet only 12 were actually written.
If you count well. Trascendental etudes +6 Paganini etudes + 3 concert etudes +2 concert etudes + etude ab irato = 24 etudes . So , he achieved his goal after all
Here it is, what I unfairly called the “intermediate” version of the Transcendental Etudes. These are just as complex and difficult as the final version we all know and love (to listen to).
@@jasonkim5503 Yes the 2nd version have some great moments lost in the final version. This intermediate version(I guess 2nd version) is worth learning. To be frank, when I was studying the piano, I played many of the first version and later on I played # 8, 9, 10, 11 and 4, 12(The order that I learned them 8 9, 10, 11, 4, & 12)the standard(the last version). I never had interest on the 5th one even though it’s great.
Actually the original studies composed by Liszt when he has just 15 years old were actually the baby ones. But it's true that S137 is more difficult than S139
Janice Weber's recording of the 12 Grand etudes is the best recording available at the moment! Weber's playing of etude no.10 is great! I prefer Weber's performance to both Howard's and Jin's!
@@thenotsookayguy Jin’s is cleaner, at a good tempo, and I feel carries the story and character of the piece nicer. It isn’t perfect by any means, but I prefer it.
@@TheModicaLiszt Pavel's is much more expressive imho, I believe they slightly slower tempo and extra rubato helps bring out the notes, and honestly mate, I haven't heard anything as beautiful as the middle section being played by him. His use of the ossias for 7 octave pianos is also real nice, Wenbin sadly just ignores them for the entire set. Whilst Pavel's performance of the Étude isn't perfect (nothing is, as everything can always be improved upon) I personally still prefer it to the latter.
why didn't you use her s. 138 to replace the s. 137/4 or at least include it in this video, i think its also a pretty cool recording (still a pity she didn't record the s. 137/4 too though)
These are so cool!

THANK YOU LORD for creating a Man called Franz Liszt. I play numerous pieces of his and still I’m FASCINATED by his works.
i like how she play 59:19 so soft, add a whole new feeling to that section
リストなのに物凄い柔らかく繊細なタッチの弾き方で穏和すぎる。超絶の第2版だというのに、これだと随分易しい作品なのではと思ってしまう。
Her interpretation of those emphatic notes in the beginning of No.8 is the best version for me!
43:00-43:01 !!!! very beautiful idea to put mozart's fifths here. Really wonderful all the performance of the work, very expressive
Etude 8 "Pandaemonium" has parts that are closer to 5/8 than 6/8

I think they are harder
I play the mazeppa of this set and I find it much harder and less pianistic than the transcadental one
Pheraps harder. I heard that Liszt made the final "transcendental" etudes to simplify the douze grande etudes a bit

Amazing recordings. They are close to perfection. If not perfect. Please continue posting Liszt stuff!!
I don’t plan to stop :)
@@TheModicaLiszt Thank you!!
38:43 that "b" is the most "pppp" ever played
Man, she definitely didn't press the key all the way down for that one, awesome stuff.
Personal timestamps:
1:00:05 interetsing notation
36:28 I didnt hear her bring out the 8th to 16th Ab to G in the RH as notated
I like the idea that Liszt had: to develop his creations gradually.
Or maybe he was just always improvising 😂
Very nice, thanks for share this!
You’re welcome :)
Lovely pfp
There are 3 practice songs on this list in total.(Also with Mazeppa)
Wow no.10 looks absolutely nuts in this version. Is it safe to say that's its amongst the most difficult in the set?
Yeah
Great job with the score video. I've never seen this version of the score before!
Thanks so much!

Interesting sounds she brings out with the tempo in #11.
I think it’s quite a stellar recording for this piece, yes.

I have only one question is why No.4 was played by Wenbin Jin? Where is the Webers played version?
She played S.138 instead of S.137/4

No.4 is not by denis weber !!!!
No, Janice Weber played S138 which I uploaded separately.
