Reggae beats are very different from pop and rock beats and will challenge you. In this lesson are some fun reggae beats from popular reggae songs like "Pressure Drop" by Toots and the Maytals, "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley (a variation on the One Drop), and "Sinsemilla" by Black Uhuru. Rockin Rick I actually decided this week that at some point I’m taking the wife over there (again) but this time I’m going to spend a few days getting lessons and playing with local musicians. No better way to learn than that. Can’t wait.
Thanks a lot for this lesson! Reggae grooves are technically easy to play, but nailing the feel and fills has always been much harder for me to do when recording
Yeah it's a blast. Gil Sharone the drummer for Manson is a beast in reggae and has good books to on this subject . Love the different flavors you bring to your chanel!!!!
@@StephenTaylorDrums I agree he is great. And thx for taking the time to comment and replying. I know your busy i look up to you boss man thx for your hard work greatly appreciated.
I play in a folk/punk band and we're currently working on a song with a pretty reggae-feeling chorus. Struggling to make it sound right in keeping the reggae feel but letting it sit cohesively in the rest of the set. This video, the fills video and the other groove video have really helped to get to grips with the style and then adapt it for what I need. Plus listening, it's so so helpful to hear it all in context
Again! Very cool! Picked it up pretty quickly because you explained it so well. Now I need to just sit down and play to a metronome for about six hours to really get it ingrained!!!
Hi Stephan, my parents lived in Kingston in the 80's and we went all over the place, awsome but watch out. 99 out of 100 are awsome, probably better odds than here. But every ting is sef an sound
Hey Stephen, I just got finished watching that FREAKIN' AMAZING solo you did on drumeo (Aug '17 )! Wow dude that was so f'n tastey! I'm really impressed (...and inclined to steal a little of it! 😉 ). Until now I've only known your work from your channel, also brilliant, but this was a master class in feel and groove. Bravo, man. Bravo. Peace
Spencer Kragseth none this weekend. I’m full up the two weekends after that though and then start a steady in town gig every Friday night in January. Trying to slow down for the Christmas season lol. Not working so far
Roots Radics were THE studio group in the 80s. They are on a mind blowing amount of tracks. Check Lincoln Style Scott. Love to see a video just on his style. Love how he replaces a snare with a kick in a beat or overnight as a fill..
@@StephenTaylorDrums Freddie McGregor , John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Yellowman, Mikey Dread the list goes on forever... Lincoln Style Scott is my favorite... 🥁
Hi Stephen, may I ask what Aquarian Drumheads you use on your Toms/Snare and Bass Drum ? Sound Amazing. YOu Mic Setup and the Software you use 'd be interesting to know, too. Greetings from over the big pond outa Germany. Thanks for all the great stuff you ome up with and the effort you put into it. Your channel is my favorite one of all the youtube drum channels by far. Keep it goin' Stephen !
Avaloctus thanks so much! Heads...response 2 Coated on tom batter, hi velocity snare batter, power stroke 2 kick batter, classic clear for reso’s. All Aquarian. Mics are Earthworks. Hope that helps!
@@StephenTaylorDrums Hey Stephen, ( by the way, coincidently my name is Stephan, too. Just an a instead of an e as the 2nd consonant 😀), thank you a lot for taking the time to answer my question. Nice one Stephen. I was once confronted with a big band chart that had a few different feels indicated but mainly only Rhythm 'slashes'. One part in the chart (Poet?) said "Bossa Reggae Feel". I basically played an 1/8th note 'Bossa' on top and just beat 3 on the Bass Drum. I guess I'll never know if that was the intention.
Hey man I like what you do but could you give a link to the recordings of what your basing your research off of? I find the best way of learning is to listen and its a youtube link to the song you a referencing to for a specific beat could really help new drummers and experienced ones.
Kollin Kolb I’m not being a smart Alec....but I’ve provided a lesson, told you what to listen to, and provided the sheet music. Can you not type in the names in the search bar on RUclips? I could provide a link, I guess, but I’ve provided all of that info typed out in the sheet music so you can look it up. I can’t spoon feed everything. You gotta take some initiative and at least be willing to type some words in to a search engine. Again, not saying this in a mean way. Just matter of fact. I can’t do it all for you.
So that first lick is basically a lightly twisted paradiddle with a swing feel. My favorite is groove is WALKING ON THE MOON by The Police. I know it's not real reggae, but I don't like reggae. I don't relate. I'm too white! 😂
With all my years behind the kit, I've never played Reggae. I think it's time to teach this old dog a new trick! :; \/ :; Yaa mun. Rollin me up wan now `~`--- I need better graphics haha!
@@StephenTaylorDrums It really is. Some Reggae songs are so relaxing. I can totally get into playing this style of music. Naturally I've heard it over the years but never gave much thought to learning that very unique pocket. Had more fun dancing with my friends.

graeme mcdonald lol, I love ambiguous big band charts. Some of the ones I’ve read through have some classic “styles” notated.

These would be a little bit easier to learn if you played the whole groove first, so the beat-by-beat instruction then makes more sense in context.
