  • "This is a shameless publicity stunt" ... The Rutles (minus Ollie Halsall and Eric Idle) returned in 1997 to record their best album, Archaeology. In this film shot and edited by Taly and Russ Johnson, Neil Innes, Rikki Fataar and John Halsey play "Major Happy's Up and Coming Once Upon a Good Time Band" and "Shangri-La," live on a rooftop in New York City. The video also features original art of Rutles merchandising and other good things.

The Rutles are/were a compliment to the Beatles. I understand that The Rutles were meant to be a parody band in all ways (given the overall appearance, sound and lyrics and also that Eric Idle was involved), but that alone shows that The Beatles had already became something greater than the members themselves in the grist mill of history! And by the way... I find the Rutles extremely well done in what they did!!

The Beatles were pretty much household names by 1964, and were already long broken up by the time The Rutles were conceived. George Harrison was also involved, proving he was basically a good sport about the whole thing.

Sorry, KUC, but their best album, Archaeology is NOT. The original "The Rutles" was such a spot-on parody of the Fab Four that it (I'd wager it was "Piggy In The Middle":) caused the Beatles' estate (all compositions: owned by Michael Jackson at one point!} to have sued the great Neil Innes for copyright infringement and he had to legally share all of 11 songwriting credits with John and Paul, even though he was friendly with both Paul, who produced the Bonzo Dog Band's only UK hit "I'm The Urban Spaceman", and with George who appeared in 1978's Rutles parody film "All You Need Is Cash" among others with Neil, et. al. "composed them all by himself - simply a genius for parody melodies and lyrics: OUTRAGEOUS!

Τhe story line yes, certainly. Like I said HIS was the original idea. But THE RUTLES cd album says clearly on the credits : All selections written by Neil Innes. And he is not featured anywhere in the actual AUDIO part of the album.

You're all wrong. Eric died in a car crash in the late 60s.

If you listen carefully to Piggy in the Middle played backwards, you can hear Ron Nasty say, "I dug up Dirk's remains and buried them in my backyard. By the mulberry bushes. Away from the noisy neighbors. No, the other noisy neighbors."

@@GirGir183 Paul is Dirk's replacement and he sued the other Rutles when they kicked him out of The Rutles for not taking Dirk's place in the car crash.

So many bands copied The Rutles, I hear The Stinks, E.L.M. (electric , light, music) and Sad Finger.
