The herring isn't really raw though. They are first cut open in a special way called 'kaken.' This releasses diestive fluids, making the herring predigest itself. Then they are kept in brine for a very long time, which also changes the texture.
Dutch people still wanna pretend it's raw though, because there was no heat applied, but it's really not raw. And below this comment, you'll probably see a lot of Dutch people contradicting this.

We Dutch are proud to have invented this "haringkaken" by Willem Beukelszoon and will never call a "zoute haring" a raw fish, at least I would not.

    • @TrojTV
      @TrojTV 5 лет назад

Keeping something in brine does not make the herring cooked all of a sudden. While pickled, the fish is still very much raw.

  • @Bricolage-ph

That wizard tower is what we locals call 'Het potlood' or the pencil and contains apartments, and the waterslide building is the central library of Rotterdam. As I child I was obsessed with the orange tubes, still don't know if they have a function or not. Rotterdam is full of interesting architecture because so much of it was bombed in 1940, they had the opportunity to rebuild it and chose a modern approach.

We in Rotterdam gives our building names haha
the cube apartmens we just call cube houses haha
But the next building (wizzard head) Is called Potlood gebouw / Pencil building.
The one with the yellow pipelines is called Gasfabriek / Gas factory.
Almost every building has his nickname the famous bridge (erasmusbrug) is called "de Zwaan" / "The Swan"
Love to see you loved Rotterdam!
I you really want >Haring< Again go the Scheveningen (no you can't pronounce that like the dutch do hahaha :P)you have "Simonis" over there they are the best! wins almost every haring contest.

Th Baltic Sea is also fished for "sprats" which are a much smaller herring species and usually smoked. IMO the best sprats say on the can "Product of Latvia" as canned and jarred sprats are a huge industry of Latvia and are shipped worldwide. Tiny omega 3 bombs and if you eat them often, you'll notice that your facial skin looks nice.

So, you like alcohol right, you like it cold right... then get yourselves to Xtracold Icebar (Amstel 194-196) for the coldest drinks ever.
Also if you have the famous fries again, (or vlamfrites) then definately check out the oldest 'chippie' in Amsterdam, Vlaams Friteshuis (Voetboogstraat 33) and have them with peanut satay sauce on - pretty damn good - ENJOY :-)

Peak district has some stunning areas. Chatsworth in the water is especially pretty but there is also a great viewing area near there in the hills along with a wonderful walk and Chatsworth hall among other attractions all within a few miles of each other.

When you get back to Amsterdam you should consider checking out the museum vrolik, it has one of the largest collections of human deformities in the world. It's creepy and awesome (and free!)

These herrings ARE NOT RAW !!! They have been treated by a process of salting and/or snap freezing at -35C. Unlike sushi/sashimi they are safe to eat, delicious and very healthy.

Good to see you tried the herring in Rotterdam and not in Amsterdam. Because in Rotterdam they make you eat it the right Dutch way: by holding it by it's tail. In Amsterdam they cut it into pieces and make you eat it with a wooden skewer with a small Dutch flag on it's top. Those poor fishes!
Actually the best herring experience is to eat just the herring, without onions and pickles, because the onions and pickles make you taste the herring no more. If you really want to taste the herring, just order it without that.

Did you only have ketchup on your friet...? Should have tried "Sauce Andalouse" or mustard & mayonnaise or curry... something less boring.

I don't like raw fish, so the herring wouldn't be for me. At least it wasn't fermented like some countries eat it, the fries looked good :-)
