How horrible for the children!
As a former lifeguard I would like to say that this is beyond sad. Many may find my view extreme but hear me out. I believe that everyone swimming in the ocean should have some form of a safety vest on. It would save thousands of lives every year.
Honestly, that's not a bad idea. No different than wearing helmets while cycling. I'm sure more people would wear them if they were more fashionable

Agreed. I never would have thought that when I was younger, but the older I get the more I realize how otherwise relatively small things on land will result in your end when they happen in a body of water.
and both parents don’t go in at the same time :( I’ve seen this happen where a wave takes 1 parent away for good. Terrible when it’s both parents at once ❤
When I was 10 years old, I read an article in Reader's Digest on how to escape a rip current by swimming parallel to the shore. Years later, when I was 17, I got caught in a strong rip on Maui that took me a long way out. At first I panicked and tried to swim against it, then remembered the article I'd read years ago. Not wanting to be some shark's next meal, I swam parallel to the shore and got out of the rip. If I hadn't known to do that, I would've drowned for sure.

How horrible. The Ocean doesn't play. I was once caught in a riptide, and by the time I remembered the instructions about swimming parallel to the shore I'd heard long before as a kid, I could no longer see the beach where my non-swimmer companion was sitting with a horrified look on his face. I only saw the island of Kauai, and it was starting to look awfully small. Swimming parallel to the shore worked like a beautiful charm, and I finally was able to make progress as I swam back to the island. I ended up having a long hike back to the spot my friend was sitting (I was fortunate in guessing which direction to walk), and by that time I saw him he was super upset. We had been alone on the beach, there was nobody to ask for any kind of assistance. An immense look of relief transformed his face when he caught sight of me. My heart goes out to this family.

I agree people ALWAYS underestimate the ocean. The ocean is vast and beautiful, but super dangerous. These people should have been wearing life vests since they were not experienced with swimming or the ocean.
2 red flags mean STAY OUT of the water
in my florida beach town they’ve even changed the wording to “the water is closed” to make it clear to visitors who think the rules aren’t for them…. They fly small banner planes every time there are double reds saying exactly that. Locals get texts every day with updated flag colors being flown at beach. Beach police keep an eye out, and you can be ticketed and fined if you go in. Local surfers can surf but go to less touristy areas and are not considered illegal as they are technically attached to a floating device. Nobody wants some dummy to ruin not only their own vacation but everyone who would witness or help with it… and a lot of people end up drowning trying to save those that do it anyway.

@@tofuluvrr837 Most public beaches have the flags and signs stating what they represent. I feel very bad for those poor folks. The ocean is deceptionally dangerous at times.

They are made very aware at every beach entrance and hotels/condos, the news, you name it… plus actual physical flags flying within eye sight of every beach goer on any beach, along with signage everywhere of what those flags mean, and planes flying when it’s double red… but to be fair maybe my town is extra about it and where they were isn’t 🤷♀️

I lived in Florida for 23 years. I'm telling you, if they say don't go in the water, you don't go in the water. That's not some little storm currents to swim in. Rest in peace to the ones who lost their lives, but come on, we gotta do better...

Please people when you visit Florida, understand there are a lot of beaches without lifeguards and no flag warning system you need to understand how to recognize rip currents from looking at the ocean. I'm real sad to hear it.
Well these people should have been wearing a life vest because they were not experienced swimmers, nor did they have knowledge about rip currents. People need to stop underestimating the dangers of the ocean, it is not a pool at a country club.

Rip current got hold of me once. I knew I shouldn't fight it, but I just couldn't let go of fighting. It was really strange. The fear of never returning to the coast overwhelmed me. Thank God I was able to swim back somehow.

You have to ride the rip current and wait until you float down a bit where you can make it to shore. I’ve been in one and allowed it to float me down the beach

If youre ever caught in a rip current dont try to swim towards the shore. Swim sideways along the coast to a calmer section.

The OCEAN is not to be taken lightly EVER. Grew up in a beach town, learned to swim with Red Cross lessons in same ocean. Still almost got snuffed numerous times going in on good days. Undertow, crashing waves, and temps all affect your experience. Plus- Never Turn Your Back😢
This is something that people living on the coast should understand. I would not go near the water without a lifeguard present.

Been swimming there since I was a baby. But I have great respect for it and wouldn't go in on a double red. It really means danger!
I was vacationing in WPB florida with my girlfriend and her family. we drove to delray beach and i got caught in a nasty riptide there. nearly lost my life, but in a moment of clarity remembered to swim parallel. this was ONE DAY before this couple drowned. My heart goes out to the deceased and the children. That could have been me but for whatever reason the universe chose them. I feel so sorry

Please people, NEVER fight a rip current! Humans rarely win. Let it take you while you relax and float on your back. Save your energy until out of the rip current....then swim parallel to the shore until you know you're out, then head in.

dont fight it ? i 26 years ago my then soon to be at that time x wifes 6 year old boy got sucked into the edge of a whirlpool in the Mississippi river , i dove in because i knew he couldn't have dealt with that current eased into the edges of it grabbed him tip toed on the suck zone holding him up out of the water holding my breath one strong lunge threw him up and as far as i could towards his mother !
then swam as hard as i could and made it out by gods grace ,my growing up in ft lauderdale swimming the oceans every weekend helped !

If you plan on going into the water, learn what the warning flags mean. I've been in rip currents, swift rivers and fast rising waters many times.
Learn what to do. Dont panic. Go with the flow. Ease your way out.
You cannot fight something much stronger than you. Just have to go with the flow.
I was at Cabo and I couldn’t keep up with uneven lines of the beach ground. Thankfully there were lifeguards they pulled me out. I was not in deep water. Have to be very cautious about unknown beaches.

Just so you know. Angle your way back to shore if the rip is strong. It will take you longer, but you will make it back on stamina. If you fight it head on you will almost certainly lose.
I had the unrealised luxury of visiting wealthy friends families FRICKEN HOTEL on S Beach Miami. Swam every morning at sunrise, got caught in the rip dozen times plus.
Very last time almost didnt make it in, I ws 3/4 way back, and some runner swam out and wanted to help , but we came back in past it and i just backstroked panting, into the sand/shore.
Fcx that RipTide! Never again! Ill just stay in close float with my pink colored pool noodle and a drink bottle full of rum and coke instead. while the wife and daught sift sea shells n sand and shout with every sharks tooth the find like its a diamond. Never forget your pool noodle! And a dark insulated cup that you can dump out if called on it. 🍹🌊🌴
We saw the couple get into the ocean & before uknew it, they we’re being swept away by the currents. We couldn’t do anything but watch them drown….
Yes. And all these people saying where were the lifeguards, it's hard to get there even if you see it happening and to rescue 2 is almost impossible if you do get to them.
People have to swim parallel to the shore when caught in a rip and eventually they will be free of the riptide..the worst thing you can do is try to swiim vertically back to shore..please tell anyone you know who swims in the ocean to mind the rip tide, stay calm and swim in a parallel manner and vertically. I saved my cousin who got caught in Lake Michigan and remembered how many times I.warned her about rips

First of all, rip current can happen at other beaches. Second, these people had no knowledge of rip currents and were not experienced swimmers.
Dying to a rip tide is essentially the same as dying from exhaustion on a treadmill. It's still sad but, like... you could've just stepped off.
Not really true. You could still drown if you do all the right things. Especially if you're a weak swimmer from PA.
Did you seriously just compare getting caught in an ocean currant and drowning to dying on a treadmill by not stepping off? Swimming parallel actually does not always work either, and when you're afraid for your life it can be difficult to think clearly or know what to do.

At 10 and 12, my older brother and I got caught in a riptide, and I remember the water being only about halfway up to my knee. I couldn’t believe how difficult it was for us to drag each other back to shore. (Hurricane season in the Caribbean.) But ALL water can be dangerous, as I learned when a seven-year-old brother of a friend drowned when he went under water at a busy hotel pool, and no one noticed.
They should put a long wall cement to block people from the waves like Waikiki in Hawaii Beach

Only strong swimmers should go in the ocean where there are waves. Even they could struggle under these conditions.

The entire coast of Florida is beach and there's no way to patrol the entire coast. I saw double-red flags, which means STAY OUT OF THE WATER and there is clear signage explaining the flag system. People are ignorant.

I remember getting pulled out in bigger 5-6 foot swells, one October maybe in 2001 off Jensen Beach. But I have surfed since 1973 and when I was out, I had boogieboard fins and a wetsuit neoprene vest on. So, I just got out about 60 yards or so and noticed how fast I was out.
Tried to start to swim back straight in the same way and that was useless. So, I realized I had two directions to go, either North or South parallel to the beach. I think South didn't let me go far either, but when I started to gradually swim backstroke northward, I noticed I got into an area where the waves were breaking a lot. So, I just started heading in with the waves and in about five or so minutes I was back on the beach.
But initially when you get out and you turn around and try to swim back in the same way, it's a bit of a sudden scare when you can't make any progress. That's the time to just chill, lay on your back and start to swim north or south and soon enough maybe in two or so minutes, you'll be back in the shoreward push of the waves. But the waves will break on you and spin you around a bit too. So, you have to be calm and be able to hold your breath a good 15 seconds and then swim slowly back up to catch a breath. I think I just did a combination switching from back stroke to breast stroke to not tire out my arms. That's why I use boogie board fins on my feet. Leg muscles are so much stronger and have so much more endurance than arm muscles.
But it takes experience and getting into a few scrapes out there to teach you respect and patience for the water.
I'm sorry this happened, I feel bad for the children. But who the fuck swims against a rip current? That was stupid as stupid gets. Rule #1 NEVER panic in the water. It's sure death. All they legit had to do was swim across it and swim back. Or let it take you out then swim away and swim back. Been there done that. You're in control of you/ your body, don't lose it.
What's unnerving me as I listen to this tragedy is that I've been to the Florida beaches many times. I've swam in the water and have been jet skiing many times. NOT ONCE have I watched out for rip currents or even sharks for that matter. Just imagine how many of us are still alive just by chance. My thoughts and prayers go out the family, and to those that have perished, RIP.

February 4, 2010 the Same Stuart, FL beach was the location of a very rare fatal shark attack.
Stephen Howard Schafer, a 38-year-old kiteboarder, tragically lost his life in a shark attack off the coast of Florida near Stuart Beach. He was kitesurfing in an unguarded water zone when several sharks surrounded and attacked him. Despite efforts by a lifeguard to rescue him, Schafer was severely wounded and unconscious. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Florida itself is quite a shark zone, but mostly around inlets where the sharks cruise to look for fish and turtles.
I have personally swam and surfed off that beach before. I remember one Summer on a calm day, I was swimming off Stuart Beach about 50 yards maybe more near some of the coastal reefs and a passing small local commercial fisherman came by to inspect me thinking I was a sea turtle. He told me that he passed this area the day before and saw a 13 Foot Shark in the vicinity of where I was swimming. I suggested that the shark could be 20 miles away by now, and he replied that they like to hang around the same area.
It appears that in Summer with the Sea Turtles coming back to Florida to lay eggs at night in the beach sand, these large sharks patrol this coastal area looking for Sea Turtle to kill and eat.
So, I have stopped swimming offshore in Stuart but still paddle out on bigger days just to get in the water. Lately though, the bottom is quite irregular and the shore break is quite severe due to the sudden shallowing of depth near the beach that I just can't seem to find a clean wave there anymore.

Not TRUE ! Go! But be careful. If you ever watch overhead drone cams of swimmers in ocean you will see just how alive the ocean is! The fricken sharks come up just out of sight for looks at you, by the dozens!!!! Overhead swim area shots show DOZENS of shark shadows stealthily watching and evading the stupid human swimmers and their nasty smelling sunscreen😁🤣 It CRAZY! Dont watch if you like the beach! you might get that I always feel like somebodies watching meee...feeling whenever you swim.
Go to Tampa Bay, avoid the East Coast of FL altogether!!!

Stuart beach is very different since the last Beach Renourishment when they pumped a lot of sand up on the beaches to protect the condominiums. Too bad that so much development was allowed directly off the first sand dune line. It would have been better to set it back 200 feet or more and allow some natural erosion to occur and even to support some native Mangrove plants to grow in natural inlets and breaks in the coastline caused by currents and swells.
Sorry for the children. Im not sorry for the adults. When there are rip currents, there are signs posted everywhere. 50 years old. I bet that neither one was in shape and did not know to swim with the rip current. Oh well, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Adhere to the fact that the beach is usually closed. It's closed to swimmers for a reason
People completely underestimate the danger of going into the ocean and swimming in general if you don’t do it frequently. In a panic situation it’s somewhat understandable why they do exactly the wrong thing swim toward shore against the current. These are always sad situations and seem to be getting more frequent. Not sure if it is more news reporting, climate change making the currents more dangerous, average Americans being in terrible physical condition of something else.

Lifeguards are by county. They cost quite a bit to maintain. Brevard has a very long coastline and a lot of other waters to patrol as well. There's only so much money to go around. But I do agree it should be a priority at least during summer and spring break.

I was their it seemed like they didn't care! It was horrible, I'm pretty sure one of the rescuers drowned, also the guy doing CPR was REALLY doing to CPR, props to him. The wgole time i was thinking, -how can something so beautiful, be so deadly?- this is why i almost drowned their, yesterday i left because if it. Now my thalassaphobia us worse.
Well the sharks would have got them. Gotta swim out at a angle then back in away from that rip current. By then a shark attack would have happened

Facts are....with commercial fishing expanding to where it currently is within only a short time period, its caused a major influx of sharks coming into shore searching for food. Which then resulting in a major spike in attacks. Drones have been flying over florida beaches specificly showing swarms of sharks. So yea i dont give a shiii where your birth place was, im stating a opinion based of factual information. Ill will say it again, sharks probably would have got them if anything, and im entitled to that opinion. You claiming misinformations based purely off of ignorance is what the problem is. In the end him and that woman was stupid and won a stupid prize. Exactly why people are no longer held accountable for their actions. Anybody with common sense would know not to go into the ocean when it is obvious that it is not safe. But no… It is always someone else’s fault.

I was caught in a riptide when I was 16. I didn't swim parallel instead I just let the current take me which required holding my breath but I was and still am an athelete at that time (martial arts/track and field) so it wasn't difficult. Once out of it I naturally floated to the surface caught my breath and swam back and went about my vacation
