In sending kids to college, parents in the Philippines were usually thinking, “my money for the tuition, my choice of what course my kid will take”. It happened to me. I changed courses twice depending on who spent for my tuition. I took up accountancy because that’s what my grandma wanted. She was the one paying for my tuition. One year later, my aunt took the helm on paying for my school and when she learned that eventually i wanted to be a lawyer, she had me took AB-Political Science. When I managed to get a full scholarship the following semester, that’s when I took the course that I wanted… Business Administration. 😂😂😂
My Mom is what we call a FilAm. She was born in the US (Stockton Ca in the late 1940s). My Dad is a true immigrant. Ennis County Clare Ireland. He immigrated with Granny when He was 13 in 1959 to Los Angeles and his two younger sisters. Mom is a nurse practitioner for over 45 years. So, traditional medicine was always provided when we three kids were sick. My Irish Dad, when we kids got sick and he was in charge. My mom inspired me to be a nurse someday... she was talking about the profession when I was in Grade 3 until graduating high school. She even told her friends that I am getting the degree soon. Here comes the graduation and I am ready to enroll in a nursing school here in Manila. The day before admission to that nursing school, I was shocked for she is now convincing me to take Pharmacy degree! Hahaha I never heard that there was such a degree! She talked about that for hours as if she is indoctrinating me.. but in the end, mothers know best... Thank God I am now a licensed pharmacist.

BEST advice I ever got for an infant with a cold actually came from the Philippino nurse practitioner at our Pediatricians office. "Americans use it wrong, put the Vick's on her feet then put thick socks on her. You detox through your feet." As a nurse for 25 years myself that sounded odd as hell to me but as a nurse I long ago learned to have more faith in nurses because we cover your as when the doctor is about to screw up. Adhy Nugroho that’s because Americans developed a habit of taking a child to the hospital for every little thing, people back home don’t have access to hospitals like that so they always have to make due and use herbs as their medicine. I went to visit my parents country back home and the nearest hospital is about 1 hr and 30 minutes away, and doctors will not take care of you unless you pay upfront and this is in the village. In the city area it’s a little better but still the same, no electricity or running water ect.

The vicks thing is so true. My mom told me a story of how my grandma saved my uncle when he ate a cookie with ants in it. He was choking from the inflammation and she made him eat vicks. She still has a tin of that stuff on her nightstand.

BEST advice I ever got for an infant with a cold actually came from the Philippino nurse practitioner at our Pediatricians office. "Americans use it wrong, put the Vick's on her feet then put thick socks on her. You detox through your feet."
As a nurse for 25 years myself that sounded odd as hell to me but as a nurse I long ago learned to have more faith in nurses because we cover your as when the doctor is about to screw up.

Healthcare is already very expensive for AMERICANS... I'd assume it seems like an absolute luxury for immigrants.
Adhy Nugroho that’s because Americans developed a habit of taking a child to the hospital for every little thing, people back home don’t have access to hospitals like that so they always have to make due and use herbs as their medicine. I went to visit my parents country back home and the nearest hospital is about 1 hr and 30 minutes away, and doctors will not take care of you unless you pay upfront and this is in the village. In the city area it’s a little better but still the same, no electricity or running water ect.

My Filipino parents tried to mold me into something I wasn’t and I rebelled and continue to be the odd, artsy, paranormal one with the unique jobs and occasional gig. Many of my aunts and cousins are nurses, though my mom herself isn’t a nurse, so I always throw that back at her whenever she says something like, “See?
