19:19 mark-- this is something that I'm extremely cautious on whenever I play this level in this game (that deep-penetrating spiked chandelier/crusher at the right exit of the hallway after the 1-up); I'm cautious about this because when I was first learning to play this game, I was under it without a shield, and little did I know, but that crusher came down fast and hard, and not only bled the rings out of me, but killed me in the bargain (the animation/freeze frame showed my rings in a tight cluster behind me, and my death-throw sprite at the same time). This is why, IMO, the optimal strategy, if you're going to go this way, would be to have a shield on; if you do, and this crusher comes down on you, you will still die, but the death won't be as gruesome as if you were unprotected (this crusher, however, is not the only one to do that to me; the one on the left side did it as well). Better yet, it would probably behoove you, if you're inexperienced, to go around the bottom part of the level and come out the other side; you may not get a time bonus, but at least you'll more likely be in one piece.
On the 8:54 mark if you jump over the spring and push right against the spikes and jump there is a hidden area below with a pile of ring boxes and an extra life. Yes he is, but he didn't set the actual region of the emulator to Japan, which is you need to do for the extra features I'm gonna mention, instead he just set the region to USA or Auto which doesn't work with these extra features, PAL has this too, so he doesn't get a 1-UP with 50.000 points and the level select code doesn't change.
