- Mountain Whitefish. One of the most common salmonids of western North America. In fact, Idaho Fish and Game says that where whitefish and trout coexist that whitefish often outnumber trout by 5 to 10 times! These native fish of Idaho are found in many rivers and lakes around the sate and often are overlooked for the more sophisticated trout. But should they be?
Whitefish, in my opinion, are one of the best tasting fish our waters have to offer. Many know they are good smoked but if you've never tried them pan fried you are missing out!
Join us for a couple days in the mountains catching LOTS of whitefish with some big trout mixed in.

Nice water and great fishing, greetings from Trout anglers of New Zealand, Tony.
Thanks Tony! Do you have whitefish in Aotearoa?
@@OLDHATOUTDOORS I don't think so, unless we call it with some other name.If it is trout, then the only trout we have in Aotearoa are Brown, Rainbow and Sea Run trouts.Tight lines.
Love it! So beautiful. And I enjoy your videos. 😊
Thanks brother!
New fish for me, and it goes on my list of things to catch! Great video!
We have those in the highwood river and we call them mountain whitefish in alberta. Delicious indeed.
I caught one of these while fishing for steelhead this morning in Oregon. I let it go but now I’m wishing i had kept it. It was around 15”. Glad you got to do some good stuff while you isolated. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching! And yes, try them sometime. Excellent eating especially out of colder water.
We go out on Pokegama here at home during the winter , i also debone them for smoking and frying
Pretty cool, watched the whole thing.
Awesome. Thanks for watching!
Nice video! We catch quite a few Round Whitefish in Michigan similar in size to those. Average size is around 11-12 inches but I catch ones up to 17.5 inches every year ice fishing. Tight lines!
We used to fish whitefish in Minnesota as well. They get a fair amount bigger than our mountain whitefish.
Whitefish was my first fish! really underrated fish!!
Totally agree!
We have these too just above you in the Kootenay's in British Columbia. No idea they were eaters until my boy started researching it. How long can you keep them on ice before cleaning them? Don't want mushy fish. 🙂 Nice vid!
Thanks for watching Brian! Honestly, I clean them right away if possible. A couple hours on ice doesn’t seem to be too bad though. Let me know how you like them!
I'm new to Idaho from Minnesota and I want to catch whitefish. Thanks for the video. Hoping to find them this week in either the Payette river south of Banks or in the Boise river somewhere around Eagle. Any tips are welcome. Thanks for the video.
Hey Jerry. We’re from Minnesota as well. Whitefish are abundant throughout Idaho and I take my underwater camera all over the Boise and see them. Are you fly fishing?
Hey, this is Tom. I am friends with Jerry. We will be dynamite fishing for them, and whatever else floats up.
Do you have any secret spots you wouldn't mind sharing?
When I go fishing I always freeze the guts and then bury it in my garden in the Spring Best fertilizer you can get .
As we used to say in the service, "Smoke'em if you got'em."
What size of hook are you using?
Size 8 salmon egg hook. a.co/d/1sKh9if
Can you describe the rig you’re using?
Small hook (size 10 or so) with a split shot 12-16” above the hook. Use a very small piece of worm and you’re good to go!
Fresh whitefish is so good I agree its way better than trout
My son Cale has been getting smelt at sugar creek for 10 days and this morning none were in there
I miss the smelting days! Good pike bait too!
What month they start spawning
Late winter.
These are lake whitefish. Mountain whitefish are different
These are mountain whitefish. There are no lake whitefish in this area.
They like maggots on a black fly
pollock and tilapia are known to not be eatable for human consumption due to poor tasting of them. I was wondering if Whitefish is the same kind of garbage. cat food content, that
