  • Mountain Whitefish. One of the most common salmonids of western North America. In fact, Idaho Fish and Game says that where whitefish and trout coexist that whitefish often outnumber trout by 5 to 10 times! These native fish of Idaho are found in many rivers and lakes around the sate and often are overlooked for the more sophisticated trout. But should they be?
Whitefish, in my opinion, are one of the best tasting fish our waters have to offer. Many know they are good smoked but if you've never tried them pan fried you are missing out!
Join us for a couple days in the mountains catching LOTS of whitefish with some big trout mixed in.

@@OLDHATOUTDOORS I don't think so, unless we call it with some other name.If it is trout, then the only trout we have in Aotearoa are Brown, Rainbow and Sea Run trouts.Tight lines.

Nice video! We catch quite a few Round Whitefish in Michigan similar in size to those. Average size is around 11-12 inches but I catch ones up to 17.5 inches every year ice fishing. Tight lines!

We used to fish whitefish in Minnesota as well. They get a fair amount bigger than our mountain whitefish.

We have these too just above you in the Kootenay's in British Columbia. No idea they were eaters until my boy started researching it. How long can you keep them on ice before cleaning them? Don't want mushy fish. 🙂 Nice vid!

Thanks for watching Brian! Honestly, I clean them right away if possible. A couple hours on ice doesn’t seem to be too bad though. Let me know how you like them!

I'm new to Idaho from Minnesota and I want to catch whitefish. Thanks for the video. Hoping to find them this week in either the Payette river south of Banks or in the Boise river somewhere around Eagle. Any tips are welcome. Thanks for the video.

Hey Jerry. We’re from Minnesota as well. Whitefish are abundant throughout Idaho and I take my underwater camera all over the Boise and see them. Are you fly fishing?

Hey, this is Tom. I am friends with Jerry. We will be dynamite fishing for them, and whatever else floats up.
Do you have any secret spots you wouldn't mind sharing?

Small hook (size 10 or so) with a split shot 12-16” above the hook. Use a very small piece of worm and you’re good to go!
