So, as an act of rebellion, many of the young US soldiers started to decorate the camouflaged cloth covering of their metal helmets.
At first it was with simple things like the name of their girlfriend or their favourite music band
But as the war progressed, slogans, symbols and doodles started to appear on the troop’s helmets; with many protesting against the war itself.

My dad carried his friend back to base after he was shot in the head. The bullet went through the front and somehow skimmed the side of his head. When he “got” a new helmet, he painted a “hole” and wrote “you missed”.
Sadly, his friend died in a helicopter explosion that my dad survived.

I also heard that since the Vietnamese were unfamiliar with the Bald Eagle, they referred to the 101st Airborne as the "Fighting Chickens."

When I was in the Army 2011, Id write on my helmet. Higher ups complained told me it was non regulation. At any rate I did it anyway, never really got into trouble for it. I wrote "Killroy was here." My fellow soldiers asked what it meant. It was a nice history lesson.

My uncle served in Vietnam in the Marine Corps. He was shot in the helmet by a hidden VC machine gun nest, the bullet grazed the top of his helmet and he wrote “Not today Wang, Nam 65’.”He is going on 75 strong.

@@CORALLLLLLLLL thanks, his 76th birthday was 2 weeks ago. It’s weird tho cuz a month after that happened he was injured in another fire fight that ended up in him getting medically discharged. A piece of shrapnel from a stray round ended in his face and neck. He is actually partially blind in his right eye now. But he is living a great life.

It’s weird how people don’t understand that Vietnam had so much experience fighting France, China, and they where the few countries that could fight off the Imperial army of japan.
They literally wrote the book on how to fight off a superior force
In WW2 the Japanese passed thru Vietnam without any resistance because the Vichy French let them
It was the British colonies that put up resistance the French colonies of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos just let them thru that’s why they took Malaysia and so on more quickly than expected
You need to check your history
The Vietnamese simply had little motivation to fight for the South Vietnamese government. It's like Iraq or Afghanistan. Not many want to fight and die for an American puppet government. South Korea, modern Japan and West Germany are the only examples where they did.

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam War and he told me he’d carry a large coin on his helmet to flip before battle to see if he would survive. He even said it once blocked a bullet from piercing through his helmet.

I was in the Norwegian Army in the late '90s. We had all grown up on '80s-era Vietnam movies, and one of the units I was in absolutely indulged in helmet art. My platoon commander had "Get some" on his helmet and our Lt Col who was affectionately known as "Bat-man" - because he was in charge of the battalion - had a Batman logo on his.

My uncle was in Nam, growing up I always wore an Ace of Spades in my hat and I didn't know about its significance to him for years until he finally asked me about it one day. I told him it was my favorite card, he told me the exact same thing in this video and I haven't worn it since. He passed away a long time ago and I miss him a lot.
I still wear one in my cowboy hats and keep one in ny truck because for my grandpa and most of my family its a sign of good luck. Kind of like how some Christians wear a cross as a sign of Gods blessing.

Usually what we take as a fact from movies is often a lie and most of the time something historical that sounds absolutely insane is true.
it’s mainly just a farb trope. graffiti was very rare and 90% of troops didn’t have any.
