During the 1980’s in the Soviet-Afghan War, Soviet Spetsnaz units were subjected to modernization of their protective equipment, primarily the headgear.
The Standard army issued steel helmets provided insufficient protection.
Instead, Spetsnaz opted for titanium helmets.

PSA: The helmet worn by Tachanka is a lower quality Maska, made of steel rather than titanium, and is not used by Spetsnaz or FSB operatives.
According to a recent video series by Oxide, apparently the maska's steel actually was more protective. Check out his series on these helmets!
Steel and titanium are very similar in terms of protection, but titanium is lighter.

@@wasdwazd Yeah, that's what my point was though I wasn't very clear. Even though the maska is less refined and has worse features and such, its steel quality meant it did better and wasn't necessarily lower quality.

Fun fact: during my deployment in 2016/17, we actually went to that palace. Its been taken/taken back numerous times over the course of soviet/american invasions. If it truly is the same palace i think you mentioned, then its definitely a thing to see. It sits on a massive mountain top, and still covered in bullet holes/blown out walls

Old Russian study after WW2 gave a rating for all common army weapons when used in self defence from bear attacks. TT-33 was 75-80% effective in stopping a bear due to its ability to pierce skulls. PPSH was 100% effective btw haha.

@@crazyzombiebos7778 his real life equivalent helmet in modern day tests have actually held up better then this helmet model and is actually show to be the toughest Russian helmet of the bunch which is ironic considering how old it is the titanium helmets in tests are actually shown to be slightly weaker when it comes to firearms specifically cant tell you why but I guess steel is better at taking puncture specifically over titanium especially in cases like this where it isnt that thick

Oxide has some amazing videos on the altyn and K6-3, great if you wanna learn some more about its ballistic qualities and other parts of its history
Oxide has a great series on all of these types of helmets and he shoots them with multiple types of guns to test their strength.

Small correction on the r1, the r1 did not originally come with aramid, instead it had thicket titanium. The altyn recieved aramid with the transitional model between the r1 and r2, these helmets were introduced around 1996.

My moms Uncle wasn't a Spetsnaz but he served in the Russian Army. He served for two years because in Russia you have to server if you don't go to college. When he entered the army, he was short, slim and not very strong. His grandma came to pick him up once his service was over and couldn't find him. And then she looked up and saw he grew a foot and was super buff. It's impressive what that did to him in a good way.

@@Josh_dbg we can talk anything. Americans copied Russians, Russians copied US. Thing is that if something doesnt work for US, works best for Russians. Same as BT tank series. It was first light tank from USA, which nobody likes but Soviets. So they bought it and build their own out from it. Funny thing even is that sloped armor was Soviet thing, so not just Americans used it, but Germans aswell. Sidewinder is malfunction tech which didnt blew up on mig. It was just stuck and thats how Soviets made their own missile. Thunderbolt was made by a guy from Soviet Union. Another thing is how American didn´t liked their own Airacobras or Kingcobras so they sold them to Soviets, but since Soviets liked 37mm cannons or even 45mm cannons on their Yaks, they liked American fighters too. There are so many things that US and Russians are sharing, its unbelievable.

Becouse the altyn, unlike in tarkov, doesn't have godlike protection, and unless you get a ricochet, you'll be one tapped with a 7.62x39. Or a 5.7. Or literally any rifle round/magnum revolver round/high velecity ap round.
