I first saw the Rolex Sub. at the Rolex store in Zurich. I was 13 and it was 1962. I never forgot that watch. When I got out of college in 1972, I looked around for a new watch. It turned out that my local Rolex dealer had just received a sub back from someone who was unable make the final payments. They let me have it for $150. It was a 1966 model 5512, 4 line, chronometer. I have worn the watch daily ever since and never wanted any other. While today it would not pass the chronometer certification testing, the design remains absolutely iconic. In the same class as the Mercedes Gullwing and P-51 Mustang, no other watch comes anywhere close.
I agree, the Rolex Submariner is absolutely perfect and here in the UK, I have always compared it to a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 or a Mark 9 Spitfire fighter plane.
In 1982, my future brother in law stopped by our home to visit my sister. He was wearing a Submariner. I saw it on his wrist and was instantly mesmerized. "State of the Art!" he exclaimed when I asked about it. It cost him $600. I finally was able to purchase one 38 years later (it was not $600). Purchased the 114060 and ABSOLUTELY love it. Great candidate for a "one watch collection." Love the video - thanks to you both!
Great video, very informative and enjoyable. The Submariner is arguably the most iconic watch of all time. Even non-watch people know what it is and recognize it. Personally, I've wanted a Sub ever since seeing it on the wrist of Sean Connery in the James Bond films of the early 1960's. I now own a 126610LV and it was worth the wait, as it is a truly marvelous watch.
My sub is 23 years old. It’s never been serviced or polished and still looks fantastic. Paid $2800 for it in 2000 and now they are going for up to 11k used
As a professional SCUBA diver that owns a scuba shop, I would love to own one, but alas, they remain outside the affordable range. It would be cool though. I would definitely dive with it.
It took me a while to buy a Submariner (or a Rolex in general), but after 15 years of collecting, I relented last year and purchased a Sub Date. Although the rest of my collection is intentionally non-versatile, the Sub is the one piece that is.
I bought my Submariner in Vietnam in 1969 and still wear it today over 52 yrs later. It has only stopped running twice . I’ve had it refurbished a few times and it still keeps very accurate time. It was manufactured in 1966 according to the serial number so that makes it a rare vintage Rolex. You can’t put a price on an heirloom like this.
I wanted a Rolex Submariner ever since I seen the 5513 on the wrist of Charles Bronson in The Mechanic when I was a kid. So I finally bought a 14060m Submariner in 2003. I love the watch and all my idols growing up like Steve McQueen and Robert Redford owned a Submariner. The Submariner is a legendary watch no matter if you love it or hate it. I have no regrets with the Sub.
By the way, I have to disagree with you about it being at a great price point; we're talking around $10K with tax. I wouldn't say that's exactly an entry level price point. Now something like the Oyster Perpetual at around $6K is probably more entry level, if you can call a watch that costs $6K entry level.
Funny you talked about the BMW 3 series example. I had my 1st BMW in 1989 - 325I. Since then I had many Porsches and BMWs. Even today, my ride is the 330XI. I have the Sub since 2004 (box, papers, receipt, links, and never been polished). In 2004, I walked into an AD and bought it on the spot. Non of today's crap where AD's are in bed with Flippers! I never became a collector but always loved my sub.
I bought a sub date in 2004 while on vacation in the Bahamas, it is a rugged watch and I have beat the heck out of it over the years and it just keeps going, unfortunately I recently smashed the crystal on the corner of a granite counter top and that did it in so I had to send it in for service, ouch that cost a couple grand.
When it comes to the Submariner, one CANNOT ignore the James Bond effect. Sean Connery as 007 is probably as reponsible for the popularity of this watch as anything the Rolex marketing department ever did!
A Kermit Stainless sub is selling on the second hand market for $24k. Royal Oak and Over Seas retail price ranges. Hulk’s are above $30k!! Even a black on black sub is $16k. . I agree, one watch - Rolex Sub. But you just can’t get them for the price you should get it for. So now it’s Omega, Octa, etc since the sub has become unobtanium.
Is this the one that fades overtime and turns blue and goes up in value im trying to find out witch Rolex that is it starts black then overtime fades into blue can someone tell me about this Rolex please

The people who actually enjoy their sub will tell you it is because it is a versatile, well made watch. Unfortunately, the sub is a status watch more than anything else, the equivalent of Louis Vuitton or driving a Mercedes...too many people care about being seen and wanting others to see them also. The sub isn't as awful as the haters make it out to be and not as great as the people who tout it as the end all be all want you to think.

Husband bought his Sub in 1996 in Maui for about $3K. Wore it until 2018 when it stopped ticking. Feared that salt water had gotten in when the crown was left unscrewed during a SCUBA trip in St. Croix. Nope...just routine service, which is now $750 from Rolex in 2022. That said, the phosphor is slowly gaining a radiation-induced aging or patina as a result of the radioactivity, so it will become more classic looking with age! My husband likes the adjustability of the band for placing over wetsuits and he has it set for a 3 mil suit, however, after hearing a story of another Sub owner who lost his Rolex when the suit compressed and allowed the watch to slip off...he now only straps it directly to his wrist and will roll up the suit sleeve as needed. Dear Sir / Madame, I don't know if you'll be at all interested in what follows, however I have unashamedly had a love affair with my Rolex since about 1984. That was when I purchased my Rolex Submariner. This unbeknown to me was a " Red Submariner ", and yes I have gone to some effort both here in England and in Australia to have it's authenticity confirmed. Unfortunately I have neither the box or the documentation. What really mattered to me was it's consistent reliability, so for over 38 years, I have had it serviced twice and pretty much worn it every day, and I still take great pride and joy in doing so. Any way I thought you enthusiasts might find that of some interest. Best wishes to all James. West. Yorks. UK

Because Rolex Sub is definetly the most brain-washed watch ever on internet and this brain washing still continues every day, exactly like this video and hundreds others, unboxings, reviews, still the same, about the same such a widely known watch. It is then super easy to be influented. No hate, I am a Rolex Sub owner endeed.
Anything else is just a copy.
SIMPLE Answer to the Question: BECAUSE IT SAYS ROLEX! Give me Two Omega's for One Rolex any day!!!!!!! Better start marking them down now! Rolex Prices are dropping!
Subs will become worthless as they are so common !
AND you still can’t get one
First off let me see if you got and let out that if it’s good enough for James Bond it’s good enough for me James Bond fast cars woman excitement and a Rolex a submariner plus testosterone equals to men can I please have one too yeah yeah don’t get me wrong you got more expensive watches Patek Philippe Omar Piaget but Rolex has a problem for a reason king of watches it’s nice to have a higher and watch but then you got to be scared about scratching it like gold and platinum matches the same manner you could take a woman grab her by the hand and jump in the ocean and have all the funny one without thinking twice now that’s what we need more in our life thank you Rolex and James Bond stainless sub Any day
Dear Sir / Madame, I don't know if you'll be at all interested in what follows, however I have unashamedly had a love affair with my Rolex since about 1984. West. Yorks. UK
