  • Good morning everyone! Today I’m delivering to this little jobsite in Toronto that requires backing into a narrow access, and blocking all lanes of traffic to get into it! Hope to get it done quick to not disturb the morning rush!

    When I have to drive a semi-trailer at the company I work for, it is usually a ~17m / ~54-foot Euro truck design semi-trailer with 12 wheels, 10 of which are empty on the ground. Maneuvering into a tight hole like the one shown in the video, even with our much more manageable and smaller machines, is an art that I haven't fully mastered yet.
    When I drive a fully loaded semi-trailer, that's 40 tons, so you can tell when the company is saving on horsepower.
    By the way, I'm the one who wants a Vieo with a Euro cab-over.

    OK, now THAT"S impressive. Before now I had never heard of the term "B-Train" before (I'm not a trucker...just an admirer of the profession), although I'd seen dual trailers on the road in other states (I'm from California where I think they're restricted or just not allowed). I didn't know that backing a vehicle with more than one trailer in any controlled fashion was even possible. Clearly, you've shown that it is! Bravo!

      He's a great operator that's for sure. We have them here in Australia (we call them B-doubles) but if you haven't done so yet, you should check out our road trains. I could be driving them soon and if I'm honest, I'm shItting myself about it haha 😂

    Now try this with the sort of doubles they pull in the United States with the dolly in the middle. B-Train doubles can be backed up with a lot of practice, but if the back trailer was significantly shorter than the front trailer or they were connected to each other by a converter dolly that is only about 10 feet long, you can pretty much hang up the idea of making a 90 degree alley dock without jackknifing something.
    I haven’t backed up B-trains but I’ve backed up a lowboy on what they call a jeep (like a dolly but it hooks to the truck fifth wheel and has a fifth wheel of its own) - and this is possible because the stinger has a locking pin to hold it straight and the jeep is significantly shorter than the lowboy. It backs up a lot like a hay wagon where the jeep jackknifes more quickly like the 15 foot trailer it is and the lowboy takes forever to turn by being 75 to 150 feet long. Takes a lot of understanding how backing up trailers works. Have to turn the truck left to turn the Jeep right to turn the lowboy left then follow the Jeep before it jackknifes but then cause the Jeep to be in line with the lowboy and then the truck in line with everything once you are straight. If the stinger didn’t lock into place or the jeep was at the back it wouldn’t be happening outside of backing up exactly straight for 10-15 feet.
    With B-trains the trailers are about the same length but that doesn’t make it much easier - it is still significantly harder than backing up a single trailer.
    I guess what I’m saying is that it’s still amazing how you can back up doubles so quickly but people need to realize that this only works if the trailers closer to the tractor are shorter than the trailers further away or if all of the trailers are about the same size. You can’t turn a long trailer fast enough to stop a short trailer behind it from jackknifing but you can straighten out a short trailer and keep the long one pointed the right way behind it if the short one is up front. Rocky Mountain doubles would be a problem backing up as well because of this because they are long trailer first so nobody should copy you and try that with those more than a couple feet.

    • @dotarsojat7725
      @dotarsojat7725 9 месяцев назад +3

      More axles allows you to carry more weight, legally.
      More weight = more money.

    • @B10Mman
      @B10Mman 9 месяцев назад +1

      It's the same as if you connect trailer a to trailer b through a ring feeder and a dolly, more axles means more weight to cart for more money. What Matt drives there in Canada is a "B double" here in Australia and we are getting more and more "B triples" on our roads now, that's 2 trailers with 5th wheels on them.

    • @SPxTwEeK
