Nashville Teens are a British group, formed in 1962. This particular song was released in 1964 where it made No.6 in the UK and No. 14 in the Billboard hot 100. It was also released in Canada. The Teens have appeared in 3 films. The song is a classic, covered by several artists.
Met my future wife in 1964 at a dance where a local band played this over and over. She couldn't dance; I didn't like to but it didn't matter. We were married 3 months later and it lasted for 33 years until she died of cancer.
I discovered this song in the '70s when I lived in Ohio, USA. This music was unfashionable then. I only did karaoke once, in Iceland, and selected this song. I knew every note, this is the best version, and the audience was stunned. I had memorized every glitch of this great one. It is easy to sing, try it! This is priceless video, thank you so much for posting. If anyone wants to know about this group, I do know a little, and they were much appreciated in England.
@Harmonicajello You sound like my older brothers who had to sneak this stuff into the house way back when. Thank God they did. I was born in 1966 into a house where The Beatles, Kinks, and The Animals ruled. I thank you Brits for discovering our Rock and Roll and returning it in even better condition than you had found it.

The piano player, John Hawken, later founded Renaissance and played with a lot of class acts. Talented guy! The singer on the right, Ray Phillips, kept the Teens going. I have a video of an 80's line-up who blew all other 60's bands off the stage with their heavy version of Tobacco Road.
John Hawken passed yesterday, May 15, 2024. He had retired to the U.S., where I met him, and we'd occasionally sit and talk in local Cafés in Metuchen NJ, where he then lived. He always had great stories to tell.

Wow...these guys could really play and sing! The keyboard is Argent/Alan Price good, and the guitar is really nailing that riff with an excellent sound and attack. Bravo Teens.
@@Mncrr I have my doubts about that. This is a live version, not the studio track, yet the guitar sounds just as proficient & I don't think either of the players is Page. Besides, Page was always trying to take credit for other people's songs when he was in Zeppelin.

John Hawken (keys) now lives, in Central New Jersey. He is a personal friend & jam buddy. In fact, I will be with him, in a few hours, hopefully, to play, "Tobacco Road"......Cheers!
I met John a few years ago, at a Strawbs gig in Toronto. (Hugh's Room) He couldn't have been nicer. It was an honour to meet him. I had written (badly) a review of a Strawbs gig way back in 1975 at my college in Canada, and he was interested in getting a copy! I hope he is doing well - 100% recovered from that stroke.
Thomas, I played with John in The Mal Gray Band in 1973. He used to come round some evenings to my flat and thrash us all at Monopoly! He'd win every time! The nicest guy you could hope to meet and a fantastic pianist. I contacted him a couple of years ago and he didn't remember a thing!! Anyway, please tell him Stirling said Hi!
Awsome piano player, Nicky Hopkins was a dear friend of mine and this would make Nicky smile. loved this song in the 60's and it still sounds great, little Everly Brothers influence and a steam hammer beat! Great Musicians they were the best the UK had.
JPR from the Ancient Order of Men does a really good version of this, and this one and his are my two favorite 👍 heard this as a kid and always liked it I'm glad I found it,thank you
Just saw the first episode of Season 1 of MAD MEN, and when the I first heard this at the end I new immediately who it was. Perfect timing for the song, MAD MEN is a great show.
Yeah, This Is The Song I Was Looking For. I Was Lying Down And The Song Title Just Popped Into My Brain!!! This Song Is Waaay, Waaay Cool. I'm Glad I Found It!!!
Thye are singing 'live' I used to go and see them and when they came to my hometown I was right at the front and they sounded excellent. Them and the Beachboys really knew how to sing live.
@pyannaguy Hi Ray Phillips was the singer, when i knew him in seventies he was still gigging,Butlins etc and worked with his dad painting and decorating.he also had a massive great dane called Odin. I called in to see him a couple or so years ago, still the same old Ray,his head under the bonnet of his beloved Mustang. He really is a nice guy.
Ray Philips (the shorter of the 2 singers) is still playing with The Nashville Teens (he has an awesome version of Little Bird google Ray Philiips & Zalatnay Sarolta) Arthur Sharp (the taller of the 2 singers) worked in music management and I believe the drummer went on to play with The Animals. Great group
I'm 62, but was only 15 when this version was released. Only found out today it was not a new song when I was a kid back then, but had been written by John D. Loudermilk 4 years earlier in 1960. You live and learn.
"I could die of boredom or holster up my guns. So I walked into Lane Pryce's office and I said, 'Fire us.' Within a year, we'd taken over two floors of the Time-Life Building."
Saw the Teens live several times in the 60's along with the terrific Small Faces, The Who, Spencer Davis, The Animals, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, man those were truly great times, when you could ee a chart topping group down at your local dance hall, where did it all go wrong. These groups could perform as good, if not better live than on disc, wish I could go back to the 60's now, I like modern music, but it all seems so electronically produced.
I love the throbbing bass in this song. I like this tune it as much now as I did when I first heard it, although this version doesn't seem as hard hitting as the one on my 45
You left out about a dozen others! I record at his son Mike Loudermilk's house, I believe you are THE Earl Clark? The one I know, you might remember me, we used to hang out a bit but I don't think I've seen you in about 7 years.
I would love to think that I was running in such distinguished company. The only time I have been in Nahsville was around 1971-72 to record one of my tunes "Emma's Spitoon". It, as Roger Miller used to say, started slow and kinda tapered off. There is a great steel guitar player from Texas named Earl Clark and an Earl Clark that was a professional basketball player. It would be an honor to hang with you and Mike Loudermilk. It sounds as though there are some great creative juices flowing there. Unless you have lived in eastern North Carolina, I am probably not the Earl Clark you hung out with. I am getting older, still gigging, and still aspiring to write that one little gem that would bring joy to a lot of folks. Keep up the good work, stir up the gift that is in you. Oh yeah "Emma's Spitoon" is posted out here on RUclips. It was recorded at Bobby Russell's studio, Creative Workshop. From what I was told by Bud Reneau, he was going to get Doug Dillard to put down the lead guitar licks. I hope that is he that you hear on the recording; what an honor to think the Doug Dillard would be playing on my tunes. Whoever it was, he laid some nice licks into my little diddy. Have a blessed day.
People like Dillard are well respected but here in Nashville it's so ordinary to hang out with those kinda folks, tho I personally have never met him, went to his hangouts a few times in hopes of meeting him but never did at least not that I know of! Look up Earl Clark Nashville songwriter, he's had some pretty big success with many of his songs, used to hang out with him a bit so I thought for sure you were him. I'll look up your song and give it a listen.
I remember a covers band who played the social clubs in Scotland. They covered this. I'm sure one of them was in the original group. Cant remember the cover bands name though.
@TheAmazingMorse Thanks. You were born into a great decade. Rock 'n' Roll had gone quiet somewhat due to it being commandeered by the impresarios. 1962 was awful for music in UK & The Beatles brought Rock back with a bang at the end of the year! I only wish i had seen their live shows before they hit the big time. That would've been something. But i was lucky enough to witness a fair few of the other 60's greats. Nashville Teens were real. They would drink in the bar with audience after shows.
