- Smooth-On fan Jon N. created this video showing how he makes a silicone mold and casts resin to make a metal cold casting. The original model is a plastic bust of Abraham Lincoln. After the brush-on silicone mold is made, plaster bandages are used to create a rigid support shell. To create the casting, Jon mixes bronze metal powder and pigment with Smooth Cast 325 resin to create the real metal finish.

To get a bronze finish rather than a resinous finish; dust the inside of the mould with the bronze powder, gently shake out the surplus and then pour the resin/bronze mix. This will give a true metallic finish.

Cool video! How many times can the mold be reused?
Well done video! Question here; if you have to end up doing a piece mold in resin, you'd probably end up gluing the pieces together after cleaning up the seams, but what would you use to fill in seam channels or divots? I'm wondering about keeping the color consistent with the other pieces and with repairs. Has this been an issue for you? Yes, you measure and all, but still, there can be variants. I haven't tried a complete glove mold yet, but looking forward to it. Thanks for posting!
Mixing some metal powder with clear epoxy or cyanoacrylate glue works well for filling holes in a metal cold casting to match the metal look.
If you apply the metal powder to mold first then add resin you would have the more metal look.

I didn't understand why you had to add the color to the silicon if it's only for making the cast any. why not just live it in its natural color?
the only reason i see using this method is because getting the head out of a one-piece mould might be hard to do, otherwise you'd have a two-piece with parting lines.
using a different colour doesn't make any sense unless it's to see where you've covered. easier to see that way, i would say.
What about spraying mold release on it and then using vaseline on the edge of the plaster halves?
Is there a way of sealing the metal so that it keeps its shine and does no go dull? the wax sealers I have used so far take the shine away and make it look like plastic again

Castings made without the powder would just have the look of the base resin.

I LOVE this technique you used to make a cold casting. I've never seen it done like this before and the finished head looks really great. I have a question to ask. What do you mean by "registration" in relation to molding? I did hear another person use the same word about lining up 2 halves of a silicone mold, is that what it refers to? You are correct. Registration refers to the 2 halves of the mold lining up correctly.
i bought some Rebound 25, but when I shook the still-sealed bottles i didn't feel no movement from the Silicone Rubber Liquide, I still haven't broken the seals, so is that normal? or anyone thing it could be outdated? well hope I can get help TY or return the item, not familiar with molding products, I'm just a beginner.
could you add metal powder AND regular filler to the resin? if so, to what parts?
+Ivan Stroganov Adding additional filler is possible, but would make a more brittle casting, hence we do not recommend it.
End result doesn't look like bronze...looks more like buffed chocolate
captn jackboot I'm sure he could buff it with a rougher grade steel wool or equivalent. it might then suit your taste. Also the bronze powder should react same as cast bronze to more sophisticated chemical patinas, for the most part.

This rubber does not have a skin safety rating, but Smooth-Sil 940 does.

This would depend on the scale - there are many techniques and materials which can be used.

Hi, I wonder how coating the outside of silicon mold with baby powder can help releasing the inside of the mold ?
I thought that adding the powder helped with the elasticity of the rubber, to avoid breaking it, that first time it was stretched to get the original piece out.
The powder helps reduce bubbles on the surface of the castings

why do you bother with coloring the rubber with first green, then yellow, then red? It seems irrelevant. Otherwise a great video of a very interesting process, the resulting positive looked amazing.
