20 minutes to remove the old suspension and to install a new ST Suspensions Coilover, on a 1981 Mk1 Rabbit Pickup Truck (aka VW Caddy, same as a Mk1 Golf, Citi Golf, Mk1 Cabriolet etc).
Recorded live during 2020 Covid-19 shelter-in-place. Working on cars should be fun, and this shouldn’t be an intimidating install even if you’re a first time DIYer. Make sure to get the suspension aligned afterwards though..
Hopefully this shows you everything you need to install the front coilovers on a Mk1 Golf platform, with some helpful tips and best practices thrown in. (Just don’t drop the bolts or nuts, oops).
TORQUE SETTINGS :
// Strut bearing (mount) to strut (the very top bolt) : 70Nm / 52 ft.lb.
// Strut mount to body (top 2 x 13mm nuts) : 20Nm / 15 ft.lb.
// Wheel bearing housing to strut (bottom 2 x bolts) : 80Nm. / 59 lb.ft.
TOOLS :
// 22mm O2 Sensor socket (for top nut - very cheap to buy - $8.99 option- www.harborfrei... )
// 6mm allen hess. socket (to stop strut spinning)
// 17mm socket for original lower bolts (and wheel bolts)
// 19mm socket for new ST camber bolts
// 13mm socket (upper nuts)
// 13mm wrench (passenger side access for one top nut)
// Torque wrench (20Nm to 80Nm range)

I've run STs on two B7 Passats, a MK4 Jetta and will be putting them in my MK1 Jetta next week. They run pretty great for a simple coilover. Save your money and don't go with super cheap coilovers. A bit of basic maintenance will keep them clean and adjustable. The only reason I'd upgrade to a pricier KW variant is if I lived somewhere snowy with a lot of salt on the road for corrosion protection. Even for first timers, this install is super simple.
I'd suggest buying the above parts, so you can skip the entire step of disassembling the old strut for parts. Assemble and install....piece of cake, You can use a silver sharpie and mark both sides of the strut bottom where it mounts to the knuckle to get close to prior camber....at least close enough to drive comfortably to the alignment shop.

@JamieOrr just found your channel and love anything to do with Mk1s :) & your presentation and tips you give are SO helpful but curious about the torque wrench at time mark 6:30 , adding the 22mm O2 wrench (~35mm +~ 350mm)would add about 5lb/ft more than indicated at a rough guess. I don't know if it matters but something to watch if the extender is longer. Keep up the awesome content (on mk1s:)
Nicely done! Just an idea for your future travels- get a 1/2” torque adapter- plenty brands make them and it turns a regular ratchet or breaker bar into a torque wrench.. small and light;-)
That is a good or GREAT idea for the travels..! I literally bought a new 1/2" torque wrench for this job, as I lost the previous one in Europe. Thanks!
Hey Jamie, just bought some new coilovers for my mk2 scirocco and even though I have the spacer and washer you recommended, the top strut still wobbles once I've tightened it down. Any ideas why this? I was presuming it would be solid with no movement at all when tightened. Thanks for any help mate!
What is the difference you can feel now between the old coilovers and STs?

The suspension comes with the top nuts, but you’ll need to get anything else yourself. That’s the same with all suspension. The bearings and washers are OEM so you can re-use if you think your old are in good shape, but it’s cheap to buy them if you want to be sure. The tool is also a really thing to grab ahead of time. :-)

Do you have to buy the whole set of 4 or do they sell just fronts somewhere? Couldn't find atleast with quick google search.

It depends on your price point and desired, but within the KW Family..:
- Solo Werks (entry level, 3 year warranty, coated normal steel body and steel spring perches) ~$450.00 Part Number : S1VW006
- ST Coilovers (This is the set in the video, 5 year warranty, composite spring perches, made in Germany) ~ $829.00
- ST XTA (Like above, but with KW's adjustable dampering settings!) ~ $1350.00
- KW Coilovers - If you want supreme rust protection these are stainless steel, have a lifetime warranty, made in Germany, and the sky's the limit with adjustable damper setttings etc, then check out the KW options - they should start around $1,300 for the non-adjustable, up to $5k + for a absolutely wildly adjustable race setup.
