- La damnation de Faust (English: The Damnation of Faust) is a work for orchestra, voices, and chorus written by Hector Berlioz (he called it a "légende dramatique").
Herbert von Karajan (5 April 1908 16 July 1989) was an Austrian orchestra and opera conductor, one of the most renowned 20th-century conductors. His obituary in The New York Times described him as "probably the world's best-known conductor and one of the most powerful figures in classical music."[1] Karajan conducted the Berlin Philharmonic for thirty-five years. He is the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, with record sales estimated at 200 million.[2]
Best version ever. Stanislas Lefort's one in second.
Very underrated comment!
Berlioz wrote in his memoirs about playing this in Budapest. The Hungarian audience was astonished and made him perform it again.
This may well be a Hungarian March but the orchestration is pure Berlioz - brilliant! and well paced (as expected) by Karajan.
this allways reminds me of La grande vadrouille movie, absolutely brilliant :)
This is one and only version that can burn my blood! Great Karajan!
A few days ago listened this from Luisi at a MET performance. Yesterday from Rattle at a LSO performance. Then I said to myself: This piece used to have more guts. Then I remembered from whom I've heard it first
how true, incomparable
Bravo herr kappellmeister !
This performance invites the immeasurable emotions
Maravilhoso Berlioz
"j'ai une conception personnelle de l'ouvrage, ce n'est pas assez triomphal, pas assez orgueilleux, .. de l'orgueil bon sang ! " - Stanislas Lefort , Grande vadrouille -
On bavarde !
Vous c’était....comme si comme ça
de moi vous osez vous foutez !
On bavarde ! vous bavardez toujours, là ! Soyez avec nous !
Ach! Calmez-vous, Herr Kapellmeister! ;)
@francaisetproud Berlioz was working on his "La damnation de Faust" and already had an Eastern European tour on the books for the work. His friends and critics suggested that he add a march with a Hungarian theme to please the Hungarian audiences. He did and it was a big success. The melody is Hungarian and has been used by other Hungarian composers such as Franz Liszt. It is a true Hungarian March within a large work by a French composer.
This what I call music!
Báječný výkon pánové, báječný. Nechválil jsem vás, ale sebe. 😃👍
That's a lot of accents, it almost feels fake 😂😂
It takes away my heart and my mind at the same time!
the Master. Sharp and majestic.
this is the right tempo! bravo!
***** This is the first time I have heard Karajan take ANYTHING faster than other conductors.
+Guy cohen hanoch I do not agree....................
There is no such thing as "right tempo".
@@cristianmunozlevill1265 - well, this was definitely the wrong tempo.
David Carter i think this is perfect

0:40 this is where the fun begins

no i want to argue

Way. Too. Fast. But maybe HvK was thinking about it in the same sense as Korngold, who when confronted by a Feldmarschall as he was rehearsing a new march with the words "but Korngold, what are you doing? That's much too fast for a march!" - replied: "Your Excellency, it's for the retreat." (Euer Exzellenz, es ist für den Rückzug.")
A brilliant repartee !
I agree, too fast, squeezes a lot of the juice out of the piece.
Are people really arguing about what language to call this piece of music? Can we save our nationalist papers for the police, please, and just enjoy this music?

This is not a "March", this is a "Galop", as ever with this "Man in a Hurry" who was Karajan.
Karajan's tempi were seldom faster, and quite often slower, than those of his contemporaries.
nope hungarian march
Very German, but not quite right, as Berlioz was French. The tempo isn't right, the interpretation is off.
maybe Karajan was a genius ...... but he did not have the necessary feeling for the expressiveness of the music. He has conducted many pieces, especially Beethoven symphonies, like someone who urgently needs to go to the toilet !!! Sorry, there were and still are conductors today who really deserve this title
Frodo, try Igor Markevitch's recording, also on YT; I think you may prefer it, as it's a little slower, but has much more tension. His complete recording is very highly regarded.
I often think that vK WAS a genius, but he might have played a massive part in, say, finding a cure for cancer. As for other conductors, Karl Bohm is sadly under-rated (although not by me !); his Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert were far more stylish. Also, of his era, Krips, Jochum, Wand, and several others.
However, he did an EXCELLENT Meistersingern from Bayreuth in the 50s, if you like Wagner.
